Christian Surfers exists to see every surfer in the water impacted by Jesus. We are evangelistic

in intent, mobilizing surfers to reach other surfers, with a culturally relevant message. We are

locally based and accountable through many Christian church denominations. Our ministry is

based on serving others through relationships. We are mobilizing Christian volunteers for out-

reach, while helping them fulfill their God given calling and potential.

Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet is a non-denominational

group of men, women, youth, boys and girls who have a pas-

sion for the Lord and a desire to spread his word. We are not

a surf club or a Bible study, we are an outreach. Although we

do have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to

serve.

Please take a moment to view our website and to pray for our

group and see if the Lord draws you, or any members of your

church or family, into our mission field.

Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet starts the year off by serving at the

Sebastian Inlet Pro surf contest. We assist in providing the judges and

competitors with coffee, water, breakfast and lunch every day of the

seven day competition. We attend the Surf Expo twice a year to man a

booth, spread Gods word and have a meaningful presence in a culture

that can be less than Christian. Our group is heavily involved with the

Eastern Surfing Association championships and the National Scholastic

Surfing Association championships, both held at Sebastian Inlet each

Spring, requiring four days of service at each event. We have many

other events happening at the inlet that you can participate in.

We meet on the first Saturday of each month, in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State

Park. We arrive early, around 8:30 am, set up our tent and coolers, surf , spread the word and

fellowship. At 9:00 we gather for a Bible study and discuss upcoming events. Then we hang

out, clean up the beach, speak with beachgoers and share what God has to offer with those who

are searching for answers. We are not there to surf, we are there to serve.

Channel Island Demo Day was a fun day even without waves.

Good times with Obie, Brian, Justin, John, all the kids and myself.

Had a couple opportunities to minister to a grandma for her son who is really

struggling and to a younger kid in a few heavy situations. He claims to be a

Christian but has really backslidden. He and I shared a little, prayed together and

he is going to come to Calvary Surf Side this weekend and I hope to meet him

there.

Great day altogether.

A Big thank you to everyone who came out to help on Sunday. A special thank you to Skyler and John Autry for helping to set up and break down. It was 50 degrees at 7:00 when we arrived to set up . We had a cold and windy Sunday but as beautiful a day as you could hope for. The surf was in the 2-4 foot range with a few

barrels to be had. Cody Thompson was crowned the 2008 King of the Peak with some great aerial attempts and a solid barrel in the lat-ter rounds to knock out Asher Noland and Rylan McCart. and secure his spot on the podium. We secured the tent and did our thing all day. The big hit was surely the hot chocolate. We went through 6 (70 oz.) thermoses by 10 am with only competitors and their family on hand. We also supplied the judges with hot chocolate, breakfast bars and fruit, which they devoured and gave a shout out during the competition to CS for the love we showed. We had breakfast bars, fruit and drinks at the CS tent as well as wax, magazines, t-shirts and stickers, all of which were a big draw. We sold a few t-shirts, had some great conversa-tions with both the surfers and spectators , had one first aid patch job and one girl ask for her first Bible. If you see Mama G sporting one of our T-shirts, while take photos at the beach, give her a big thumbs up.

Next up is the Volcom event. This is the same day as our next CS event on December 6th. Because this is a contest day, it would be great to show up around 7:00 to set up and be there to pass out wax to the competitors, and get the word out. See you then.

Page 14: Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet

Well, the 2009 Quiksilver King of the Peak event went down in windy con-ditions again this year, but unlike last year the temperatures were well above 60 degrees and the sun was out for the final day.

There was great surfing going on during this very unique formatted surf contest and after two days Eddie Guilbeau emerged with the most skin wins and the coveted crown.

Christian Surfers had the only other tent on the beach during the entire event and had an opportunity to serve God and through serving the surfers while providing Matt Kechele with a go to person if he needed any-thing. We also provided Matt with security Sunday night and manpower

both days with set up, break down and moving any equipment and banners.

Special thanks go out to Trenton who was there both days and slept out in the tent for security. Also, the Sadowski family came out to provide security. It was a real witness to Matt how committed Christians are, and we want to thank you so much.

Next up, the Volcom event on Dec. 5th. This will be the same day as our monthly event and this is Volcoms largest event on the east coast and they say it is about 3 times as large as the Quiksilver event. See you all there.

Quiksilver King of the Groms surf contest

will be held This Saturday at Sebastian

Inlet starting at 7:00 am and going

throughout the day. Quiksilver has given

Christian Surfers the thumbs up to come

out and support their event. This is a

great opportunity to be there with the

groms and their families and share Gods

love for all.

We will set up our tent at 6:45 and be

ready to serve the surfers and their fami-

lies as well as shine our light on Quik-

silver and their team that will be there.

We just received 100 of the Surfers Guide

to God gospel of Mark. Come help pass

them out.

Christian Surfers is an outreach opportunity that reaches

out to surfers. You do not need to be the best surfer, you

don’t even need to know how to surf, this is not about

surfing, it’s about serving. Come out to serve surfers,

clean up the beach and share Gods love with others. It’s

amazing the response we get from those at the beach

when we are there and to tell them we do if for the Lord

is so rewarding.

This is how it went down during the ESA Southeastern Regional Championships

held this past Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Sebastian Inlet. Set up, serve and

get to witness to and witness some of the best surfers in the country.

We have so many people to thank. Marsha Abeln and her family came out and

worked the tent and the crowd all day Saturday and what a life saver as we had no

other volunteers for that day. The sun was out, the waves were big and the beach

was packed with tons of families. When we arrived to relieve the Marsha and the

gang they were out of food, drinks, DVDs, Channel Magazines and almost every-

thing else we had brought for the day.

Day two started off with Bill Whatley and his wife Kate

showing up and Bill winning the Legends Longboard divi-

sion. Kate went on to compete in the finals of the Ladies

division and placed second overall. Bill and Kate are not

only well respected surfers in and out of the competitive

arena but they are also the Christian Surfers Directors of the

New Smyrna chapter. If you have any time this weekend go

to New Smyrna and help them serve at the Landshark Pro which goes on this

Wednesday thru Sunday. They really need your assistance.

Matt Deery and Randall Anderson made an appearance Sunday afternoon and

helped provide security Sunday night. Matt also hung around Monday to share

his testimony and love for others. Matt is a new CS member and works for

Harley Davidson in Palm Bay. Welcome aboard Matt.

Rob Viesins worked his tail off shuttling food to the event site for the ESA staff

as well as provided needed muscle after the event breaking down the scaffolding.

What was really fun was setting up the teams tents and chairs prior to their arrival

on Monday so when they got there they did not have to do it. Helping carry the

trophies to the beach after they announced they needed volunteers over and over

and no one else showed up. Helping vendors cart their tents and product to and

from the beach so they did not have to make multiple trips. The ESA announced

Christian Surfers as a supporter throughout the event and gave us a BIG thank you

prior to handing out the awards.

All the glory goes to God and He allowed us an opportunity to serve and that was

so rewarding.

The NSSA is one of the few national youth sports organizations that require its participants to maintain academic standards in order to compete. Please think about coming out to support Christian Surfers and the NSSA this week. This is a 4 day event and we need 3 teams of 2 to commit to being there for one day each. We already have Sunday covered. Shoot me an e-mail if you can cover a day [email protected].

What does this require? Well CS already has magazines, DVD’s, stickers, flyers, Bibles…. to be displayed on the table to be given away, FOR FREE, to anyone who is interested. What we need from each team is for them to provide water, juice, ice and snacks (breakfast bars, crackers, fruit…) for the day. I find that for the contests it costs about $100 a day for all the food and drink. Once every-thing is set up, it’s up to you to make it known that we are there and they can come and get something to eat or drink and while they are there to interact with them and plant seeds for God. We put the Golden Rule into action and we are there to give all the glory to God.

Another great event went down this past week and Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet was a key part of it. We spent

all day Thursday, Friday and Sunday (6:30 am to 4:00 pm) at the inlet. It started out great, John Autry helped out

with setting up near the scaffolding and we did our thing on Thursday. Chapter member Nate Gallagher was

competing, but the lack of waves and his unfortunate heat time, dead high tide, did not allow Nate to show his

stuff. That behind us we kept on, passing out water, fruit, sunscreen … all day. The announcer told the crown

throughout the day, that if they needed sunscreen to go to the Christian Surfers tent so that was a positive shout

out, all day. We had a God moment when one of the competitors showed up and dropped off four cases of Fa-

mous surf wax . I say a God moment because we were running out of the wax we had to purchase from On A

Mission and needed to get more so, this fills that need. We got to see lots of people we had met during the recent

ESA contest and it was nice to catch up.

Day two was a different story. We had been told that the NSSA owners

were not very interested in Christians and that became apparent when we

set our tent up in the same place as the previous day. All of a sudden they

wanted us to move, so we did not once but twice and we were surprised

they stopped waving us to move down the beach. In return, Matt Deery

and I took them a full basket of fruit and breakfast bars. We were not go-

ing to let negative actions affect our positive responsibility.

We did not have anyone to cover for Saturday so Sunday was out last day

out there. Interestingly enough we were greeted by one of the NSSA

owners thanking us for our gift basket. Matt and I were also asked over

and over where we were on Saturday and were told that we were missed.

We set up right where we were the first day and again passed out lots of sunscreen, 4 cases of water, juice, Gator-

ade, fruit, crackers….. We went through all 50 DVD’s we just received on Saturday, about 15 Bibles, CS stick-

ers and added around 15 new e-mails to our list. We also took the time to help one the NSSA owners assemble the

trophies. During that time we spoke about why we are there and why we do what we do. She was a bit taken back

by our commitment to the surfers and surf community. She even said that if we would like to provide security

next year they would pay our chapter for our service.

Again God is working through this chapter. When things get tough and you wonder what we are really doing days

like this happen and it all makes since. Kingdom Business is so rewarding.

The Rip Curl Grom Search, held at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet, went down last Sunday in fun, although shifty, 2-4 foot surf. Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet went up to help out our CS New Smyrna chapter as well as Connie Howard ( our ever present surf servant) and Sam Jordan (CS Daytona Beach) who were in charge of the event. We arrived at 6:00 am to make the 2 mile trek along the boardwalk to the beach, so we could have the tents and equipment up before the beach opened up to the cars. After two trips along the board-walk and setting everything up we got a quick 30 minute surf and then the cars started coming. We were there with all of our stuff; DVD’s, food, drinks, Bibles, individual gospels, t-shirts… and had a great day. We actually had 20 people take the Surfers Bibles within the first two hours of the contest. We sold a few t-shirts and went through about 40 Noah’s Ark DVD’s and of course all of our food and drinks. We meet so many people from all over but by far, the crew from Barbados had come the longest distance. They actu-ally had 3 of the 4 finalists in the girls division. We saw a lot of CS stickers going on boards too so that was cool. It was nice to see Missy from CS Gainesville there with her daughter, who was competing in the contest also. CS Sebastian grom Tommy Coleman made the trip up as did Sebastian ripper Logan Hayes. Tommy (7 years old) who surfed in the 12 and under division, went out in the morning surf that was almost to consistent. The swells were about 5 seconds apart and made for a tough paddle and an inconsistent line-up. Although he placed well, it was not enough to advance. Logan however made it through to the finals and placed 3rd in the 12 and under division. Evan Geiselman won the 16 and under division. Thanks to everyone who came out (Jon & Kathy, Bill & Kate, Sherri, Noah, the New Smyrna groms, Connie and Sam). This was a great time and gave us an opportunity to meet and speak with a lot of people. More importantly is gave us an opportunity to share Christ and to give him the glory.

Page 22: Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet

The event had some delays and some windy conditions but Sunday brought blue sky's and off shore winds creating solid shoulder high surf that allowed the guys to do their thing. Aaron

Cormican, Blake Jones, Corey Lopez and Nathanial Curran were in the finals. Aaron almost

squeaked it out in the last minute with a flurry of waves but Nathaniel held on and took the home the $12,000.

The Praise Report was that CSSI was able to serve the competitors and the spectators through-

out the event with great appreciation. We had over 30 people sign up to be on our e-mail list,

we sold a dozen CS t-shirts and passed out over 40 Noah’s Ark DVD’s and had some great conversations with the surfers and those attending the event.

Thanks again to everyone who committed time and effort to the event.

First off, lets thank the Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna chapters for assist-

ing at the Sebastian Pro and providing security on two of the coldest

nights of the event. As special thank you goes out to Connie Howard, a real angle. Connie was at the event almost every day with home made

cinnamon rolls, French toast and chili. Not only can she cook but she

was a huge help to us and a true servant.

Surf Expo

Page 28: Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet

This past weekend was a great opportunity to serve a

side of the surf community we don’t often see. At the

Surf Expo, we were able to touch those that are influ-

encing the surf world as we know it. All the advertis-

ing, designs, and attitude is driven by these few indi-

viduals, and we were able to impact them with our

desire to be a positive light. The looks on their faces

when we offered to assist in their setting up of their

booths, offering coffee and donuts each morning and

assisting them during their exodus, was priceless.

“What’s the catch” was the vibe and when you said

you were just there to help them, any way we could,

they were like, “Dude that is so cool”. We had a very

positive reception and a request to lead morning

prayers, each morning of the next show.

Calvary Chapel Vero Beach conducted a Praise and

Worship service on Saturday evening which allowed

for reps, buyers and attendees to relax and fellowship.

The Lord was visibly present at this Expo and pray

that those we interacted with realize He is still with

them.

God Bless

Monthly Gatherings

Page 32: Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet

Free Surf Lessons Come out Saturday August 1st at 8:00 am for a one hour, FREE, surf lesson. We will be holding these free surf lessons through September. This is a great way to get into the water and feel comfortable with friends and get some seasoned ad-vise.

Attached is a word document for you to print out. Print out at least 10 flyers for surf shops, bulletin boards, friends, church and just to leave around. We want non-Christians to attend also, in hopes they will see our loving spirit and want to investigate what has us so fired up. Thanks for your help getting the word out, we want these to be great events but we can not do it without your help. After the lessons we will have our monthly Christian Surfers outing. Our focus is surfers, so we not only surf during these events but we step out to make sure those walking by know that we care for them by providing them with snacks and drinks. We walk the beach and pass out wax and sunscreen to those hesitant to come to us, we assist those making their way to and from the beach with their arms full, we clean up the beach because others don’t. We put the Golden Rule into action and we are there to give all the glory to God.

Click on the Christian Surfers logo to the right to open the release form which is required for all persons under the age of 18 to enter the water, during the surf lessons.
