EWSLETTERNWILLIAM CAREY C H R I S T I A N S C H O O L

It is with deep sadness that we have marked the passing of one of our staff at William Carey. Toni Layfield passed away on Friday 29th October after an extended battle with cancer. Toni had been a long serving member of staff working as part of our marketing team. Her graphic work has been such an important part of the school’s promotions and her designs will continue to be used in many areas. We will miss Toni’s energy and passion for the school but also know that she is with her saviour Jesus Christ. Our prayers and thoughts continue to be with her family.

At the year 3-6 dance I spent some time speaking to parents with regard to the results from the school survey and future directions for the school. Key positive findings from parents and students across the school, indicate they view the school very positively with families feeling this is a safe school with strong pastoral care, and students are happy to attend. Families and students also endorsed the school strongly with a willingness to recommend the school to others.

A number of areas were identified for further development. As a school, we take this feedback seriously and I am currently meeting with the school Board, senior executive and staff to develop a school improvement plan and goals for 2017. As a school we will continue to proclaim the gospel, provide an inclusive, supportive and safe learning community. We will strive to improve student learning with engaging programs informed by evidence based educational research.

It was a great joy to attend the Creative Arts Open Night and be in the audience of so many student performances and displays from our Year 7 to 11 students. Each year the quality and depth of students’ performances increases. I would like to thank the Creative Arts staff for the work they put into making this such a successful showcase evening.

On the Thursday 1st of December we will be hosting our next community event, ‘Tis the Season’. It would be wonderful to join with you for an evening of Carey Christmas Carols to celebrate the birth of our Saviour.

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14 (NIV)

From your

High School Deputy PrincipalsBullying and poor use of social media.

Once again, bullying has become a problem in the High School. When students come to school, they want to be happy and be part of a safe, secure and inclusive environment. They normally don't begrudge this opportunity to others either, so the verse from Luke I have listed below wouldn't be expected to be difficult to apply in our school:

Luke 6:31 (NIV). "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

This command comes from the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and contains a parallel commandment: “Whatever is hurtful to you, do not do to any other person.” The vast majority of students don't wake in the morning and plan who they will encourage and support and who they will attack, ridicule or take revenge upon during the course of their day. On the contrary, they go through their day managing their fears and apprehensions, they cover their inadequacies, and they protect themselves from danger as they learn about and explore the world that God has created. Then something of an adverse nature happens in their day and they react or even retaliate. A perceived (or intentional) harsh word or action happens against them and they must decide "what to do next". Some students can make wise choices with their behaviour, and they act with a measured wisdom. Unfortunately, some have difficulty managing their response in difficult circumstances and choose to pay back using unkind words or actions of their own. The Bible gives us more advice at this point:

Romans 12:18 (NIV). "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

Luke 6:27-28 & 36 (NIV). “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

There is a very real challenge for all of our students to learn that civility, friendship and healthy peer relationships are the foundations of experiencing success in the high school. It is a significant part of the training that we work through in the Wellbeing Tutor Program, as well as the Peer Support Program between our Year 7 and Year 11 students. It is

important to note that the opposing argument is also very relevant as well. Reckless, aggressive or non-inclusive behaviour can be perceived as harassment and, if ongoing, determined to be bullying. Students will be suspended or expelled for bullying.

Students who are graduating from the Primary School should also be conducting a self-assessment (with the help of their parents) and consider if these issues of peer relationships are a concern for them. Poor social behaviours that may have crept in during their time in the Primary School need to be addressed prior to the child leaving the safety of this more protected environment. In the Primary School a single classroom teacher is generally caring for and managing the child, but as the individual enters the High School they find themselves thrust into the situation where they have the liberties as well as the consequences of having ten or more staff managing not only their academic studies, but also their wellbeing and behavioural expectations. For some students these new found circumstances can be overwhelming, some find the opportunities to push the boundaries irresistible and get into trouble. Increased exposure to the Internet, higher levels of involvement in social media, sometimes a growing awareness of the opposite sex and the possible adverse effects of growing through adolescents can be a challenging combination for both the parent and the school alike.

So what should we do when someone doesn’t treat us as we would hope? The Bible instructs us that when we are grieved by others, to forgive them. Forgiveness isn't easy and certainly does not mean forgetting all that has happened in the past and therefore putting yourself at risk. Forgiveness is the cancelling of a debt ... In a school context it may mean that even though I have been hurt by another person's word or action, I won't bring it up (once resolved), I won't gossip about it (or place it on social media) I won't dwell on it and I certainly will not seek revenge. This does not mean I will be a door mat or an emotional punching bag. I will keep myself safe and act responsibly. I will therefore seek advice from my parents, I may choose to report the incident to the authorities of the school and expect an appropriate response (reporting to my teacher, year advisers, HS Deputy and so on as needed) and possibly I may even involve the police if required. Living and working harmoniously as a part of a community is not always easy but it is what we are called to do. In His service,Brad Milburn.Deputy Principal Welfare.(On behalf of the High School Deputies)

Year 6

Over the next few weeks, we have a variety of activities to mark the end of Primary School for our Year 6 students, culminating in their graduation assembly and dinner/dance. We have the dual goals of wishing to celebrate this milestone, while also aiming to prepare them for the transition to High School. One of the blessings of William Carey is that we get to watch our “babies” as they move out of our care and into High School. Even though they are no longer directly in our care, we still pray for them and love to hear updates regarding how they are going.

Presentation Assembly

Our end of year presentation assembly will be held on Thursday 8th December at 9am in the hall. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students over 2016. Parents are most welcome to attend. There will be a special guest performance in place of the usual Christmas message, which I am very excited about. More details soon.

2017 Continued…

The end of 2016 sees the retirement/resignation of some long term staff at William Carey. Mrs Karen Dimmock, originally a parent in the school, has been a learning support assistant since 1996. She has worked with many, many children over those years, to great benefit. Mrs Dimmock will be retiring at the end of the year and we wish her all the best for a well-earned retirement. Mrs Belinda Stone has taught at William Carey since 2002, covering a variety of grades and being very involved in many facets of school life. Mr and Mrs Stone are making a “tree change”, which will be an exciting time for their young family. Mrs Alison Cooper has been a staff member at William Carey since 2003, being one of the first people I interviewed as Primary Deputy (I think I got the right result!) Mrs Cooper has mainly worked in our K-2 department, with valuable involvement in Prep over recent years. Sadly for us, another school has

realised Mrs Cooper’s worth, and has snapped her up for 2017. Our loss is their gain.

Consequently, we are currently interviewing for some new staff for 2017 and would appreciate your prayers for the right people to be appointed. We have always been very blessed with the staff at William Carey and I look forward to who God has in store for us in the years to come. I will announce new appointments as they are finalised.

Students of High Distinction

I was very pleased to be able to award Jayden G (4C) and Anoushka K (5HD) with High Distinction awards for the recent ICAS Mathematics Competition. Achieving results in the top 1% of all entrants for their age is an amazing feat.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. Proverbs 18:10

Important health noticeA student in our school community is currently receiving treatment which results in a lowered immune system, which means the student is more prone to getting ill from infections. Although the student has a chronic illness, it is important that the student be able to participate actively in the day to day school program. A major concern is that if this student develops measles, chickenpox or influenza, the student may become seriously ill. We seek your cooperation in preventing this situation.

If your child has or may have measles or chicken pox, we would ask that you please:1. Do not send your child to school.2. Notify the Senior School Nurse as soon as possible: email: [email protected] phone: 9608 2277

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe for all students, and especially for our students with special health needs.

Mrs Anna Huynh,Senior School Nurse

If your child is moving from Year 2 into Year 3 or from Year 6 into Year 7, you will need to update their Opal card details online. This update cannot be done by the school, and must be completed by the child's parent or carer.

You also need to update your child's details if you have a change of address at any time throughout the year.

To update Opal card details please visit this address - https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Well done, Ishaana!

Being Born

I came from another world not knowingwhat to expect but to expect something.

Being born made me accept the expected, the beauty of this world which comes in the form

of my family and friends but, most of all, being born makes me learn and appreciate this world.

Once again, the annual Creative Arts Open night provides a wonderful opportunity for our 7-11 students to showcase their work in the diverse areas that we offer at Carey of; Dance, Drama, Lifeskills Drama, Lifeskills Visual Arts, Music, Photographic and Digital Media, VET Entertainment and Visual Arts.

After some trepidation that the rain might stay for the event, it was fantastic that it held off for our outdoor G Block café style stage, where the evening kicked off with Joshua S in Year 11 on acoustic guitar performing his own composition. The audience was able to grab a sausage

sandwich here from Jacob R and Peter S, our helpful Year 11 Hospitality students as they enjoyed the musical delights of students such as Milina M in Year 8 with her vocal rendition of ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow.’

G16 simultaneously commenced with a featuring of our popular Drama club, performing a series of short self-devised pieces. An audience favourite included ‘The Mundane things of life.’ Highlights also included the Year 11 Drama group performance of ‘Shumba’ and some exciting new Year 8 talent from Rachel O, Paris K and Juliette H. The space also featured Dance and Music pieces such as

Emily N, Siobhan M and Alisha G’s rhythmic vocal work and Olivia Clarke’s groovy ‘Grown Woman.’

At the same time in the hall, the Year 11 combination of William T, Reuben W, Nashe M, Rohan V, Lucas M and Curtis B got the audience moving to the beat with ‘Be Multiplied’ and ‘Difference Maker’. The back of the hall was also lit up to display the talents of our Year 7-11 students, with highlights including the Year 8 lino work, the Year 9 landscape oil paintings and the Year 11 Art and Controversy pieces such as Jane H’s enormous Michael Jackson oil painting entitled ‘Beautiful Lies.’

The hall also featured our Dance students, with some highlights including a lyrical Year 11 dance work entitled ‘Triptych’ and Year 9 Dance performing ‘Light Rays‘ in semi darkness with torches and the self-choreographed ‘Fly‘. Lincoln Y and Jackson W from Year 11 Drama also soloed with some convicting monologues.

The hall foyer was displayed our Year 7 ceramic clocks, Lifeskills Visual Arts work and Year 9 Photographic and Digital Media work as well as a selection of Year 8 ink and lino work. Year 10 Photographic and Digital media video work including music videos and mockumentaries was screened here, with many Year 10 student faces recognisable in the footage. This space housed

34

the grand piano and piano soloists including Esther P, and the sibling duo of Lauren and Lucas M on piano and vocals.

Our Year 11 Entertainment students provided quality customer service at the event and ran the production elements in G16, also capably assisting with front of house at the G block outdoor stage.

We thank all students, friends and family in the WCCS community who supported this night as well as the assistance of Year 7-11 student helpers and the wonderful WCCS sound team with Dave Goldsmith and Laura Heard. We look forward to Open Night 2017!
