PREFACE,

The Center for the American Woman and Politics (CAWP) intendsthis bibliography to serve as a guide to information about women's partici-pation in American politics. It is hoped that by giving an idea of what isavailable and by implication what has not yet been done, this bibliographywill stimulate new studies that will contribute to our knowledge of women!sparticipation in public life and government.

Emphasis is on materials published since 1965, but landmark workspublished earlier a:e also included. CAWP's specialized collection onwomen and American politics contains many of the unpublished sources listedin the bibliography which may not be readily availaole elsewhere; inquiriesare invited regarding this material.

Citations include information on the following topics: women holdingelective and appointive office or employed in government or public service;voting behavior, political attitudes, political participation, and socializationof women; women in the political parties; and women's election campaigns. Also included are a limited number of citations to materials on public policyissues related to women's rights such as the Equal Rights Amendment, abortion, child care, employment, education and legal rights.

Entries are arranged by format (see CONTENTS) and are listed alpha-betically by author or main entry. For the convenience of the reader, a generalsubject index is provided. The index should be used as a flexible guide tocitations. Because many of the subject categories overlap, readers are ad-vised to review the entire index. Periodicals are not indexed.

For retrospective coverage, the reader should consult Albert Krichmar'sThe Women's Rights Movement in the United States, 1848-1970: A Bibliography, and Sourcebook, Rosa line Levenson's Women in Government and Politics: ABibliography of American and Foreign Sources, and Morris Levitt's Women's Rolein American Politics (see bibliography for detailed citation).

In order to make the bibliography as current and as comprehensiveas possible, users are urged to submit references to additional published andunpublished research and to work in progress.
