February 2013 Page 4 SAY YOU SAW IT IN “CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS”

I t’s February, a month when most people concentrate on

being in a relationship with someone else. As important a

topic that this is, I will wait to address it in a few months

when we talk about relationships. If you read January’s issue

of Christian Community News, you know that over the course

of 2013 I will be teaching Life Balance through an ongoing

magazine series. This is a course that God revealed to me

many years ago, I believe as far back as 2006. Since its

inception, literally thousands of people have had access to its

instruction and gained the hope to achieve goals and dreams

that had otherwise been discarded.

Let’s review last month’s “Personal” examination. You can

find the January issue at papaspantry.org/ccn.

As we began to dig into personal matters, it quickly became

clear that a true evaluation would require much time, prayer,

and analysis. I never recommend New Year’s resolutions in

January. On the contrary, improving any aspect of one’s life

should never be reduced to careless whimsical ideas.

It is one thing to identify areas in which to improve, after all,

we are each a work in progress. It is entirely something else to

develop and implement a practical plan to make the desired

outcome a reality. Want to lose weight, why? Want to quit

smoking, why? Want to begin saving money, WHY?

The “why story” you create will either be enough ammunition

to follow through with your desire, or it will simply turn into a

“wish.” Painful “whys” give much more momentum than “feel

good” whys. You will be more driven to get a job to avoid the

reality of living in your car rather than the inspiration of “it

would feel good to have money for a rainy day.”

In the Life Balance course, there are 8 major impact areas.

The first is Personal; the second is Preparation. An odd

classification you think? Tell me, how much time do you take

in preparing for anything? A class you may be enrolled in,

your child’s lunchbox, a presentation at work? How about

simple household or personal tasks such as preparing a meal,

doing the laundry, planning a party, holiday, vacation, or even

retirement? These lists can be very long… in fact, if you

spend some time thinking about it, it can seem overwhelming!

As microwave ovens and fast food become popular in our

culture, preparation time and focus has diminished from our

homes considerably. It can be far easier to go through a fast

food drive-through window for dinner than heading to the

grocery store. (If you learn the names of every person at the

restaurant window, you may need to make an immediate

change!)

Planning dinner may look something like this: 1) find a park-

ing space at the grocery store, 2) get out of the car, 3) walk

into the store, 4) navigate up and down isles and around the

four walls of the store 5) pick up the few needed food items

you came in for, 6) pick up extra impulsive items, 7) carry and

juggle much more than you anticipated in your arms, 8) stand

in a line which seemed like the shortest, (but you knew some-

thing will delay it), 9) pay for the groceries, more than is prob-

ably budgeted, 10) carry groceries to the car, 11) drive home

trying not to spill any of the new food items, 12) unload gro-

ceries from the car and find an open place on the kitchen coun-

ter

13) clean the kitchen sink and counters, 14) prepare to begin to

cook… Doesn’t it seem as if THERE ARE ENTIRELY TOO

MANY DETAILS??

Today, we find ourselves busy dealing with day–to-day

“emergencies” that we fail to properly think ahead and plan

for necessary needs and events. I personally remember the

day when I would shop once a week for everything the family

needed for the upcoming seven days, and diligently and care-

fully stay within budget. Now, it seems there are

“unexpected” reasons to visit the local store almost every day!

As you can imagine, the budget is nearly non-existent in light

of poor planning. As with relationships, we will look at the

Financial impact area in a couple of months. This example is

simply to illustrate the potential result of poor planning… the

lack of Preparation for something as basic as meals.

Preparation is Power! By Lynne Saunders (#2 in a series)

(Continued on next page)

(Continued on page 17)

February 2013 Page 5 SAY YOU SAW IT IN “CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS”

Far too often, we find ourselves “winging it,” or “flying by the

seat of our pants!” We can get away with it somewhat, but there

will come that day when it will all come crashing down around

us… and at the most in-opportune, and most embarrassing time

possible.

This fast, yet aimless, pace can only last so long before you burn

out. What will happen then? This is what the phrase “Ninety to

Nothing” means that you are going ninety miles an hour when,

crash! You hit a wall and are now at zero. How long will it take

to get back up to get back on that endless hamster wheel?

I will tell you, aimless has to go. Impactful activities are those

that should be prioritized, not only for yourself, but for those you

love. This is where Life Balance comes in… this is where Prep-

aration makes you a super star… This is where Goal Setting be-

comes your North Star!

GOAL SETTING. When was the last

time you thought about goals? When

was the last time you wrote your goals

down? When was the last time you

looked at your written goals to see

where you are in regard to reaching

those goals?

Do you know the top 10% of those who

create this country’s wealth write their

goals and consult them on a regular

basis to determine whether they are on

track or shifting away?

I have often said, “If you want to be

rich, find someone who is wealthy and

learn what they do. If you want a great

marriage, find a couple who has

successfully been married for a long

time and ask them to mentor you.”

We each have a barometer that directs

us. The secret of success is to take

control of that tool so that we direct our

path… not reacting to the circumstances

that happen to us.

How do we begin to write goals??

Remember this:

MRS Goal has a PLAN!

What separate' wants, dreams and

desires from actual road maps to

success are the details. To truly be a

goal, the item must be (M) Measurable,

(R) Realistic, and (S) Specific.

In my workshops, I use losing weight as

an example. Most of us have aspired to

losing ten pounds at some point in time.

Simply stating 10 pounds is NOT a

goal. More information and analysis is

needed to establish it as one.

What if we (you/me) decided that we would plan to lose the 10

pounds over the next 2 months, or eight weeks. That would be

about 1 1/4—1 1/2 per week… Is that a goal?

YES! The weight loss desire is now measurable, specific, and

realistic!

Great, now what?? You need a PLAN!

This is the time that you would reach for your time manage-

ment organizer of choice to schedule the time frame each week

and day to carry out the weight loss plan details.

February 2013 Page 6 SAY YOU SAW IT IN “CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS”

I t has been said that this life is just preparation for

the next one and that every day is an audition.

That statement certainly contains some truth wor-

thy of consideration, but before I explain myself in detail,

let me clarify a few things. First of all, I am convinced

that a person’s eternal destiny is sealed once he or she

accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior (see John

3:36; 5:24; 10:27-29; 1 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians

1:13-14; 1 Peter 1:3-5; and 1 John 5:13 just to list a few

verses). So, when I use the words prepare and

audition, I am not referring to works that someone

must do in order to earn their way into Heaven.

Secondly, I’m not implying that we ought to live seeking

the approval of others. If our lives are pleasing to God,

then we will bless others, and the only people we offend

will be those who oppose our Christian values. In

essence, it will be God in us who offends them, not us,

and that is regrettably unavoidable. Yes, I know

Christians acting in the flesh and not under the influence

of the Holy Spirit have offended many (myself included),

but that obviously stands in contrast to my prior

“statement about pleasing God.

So exactly how is this life a preparation for the next one?

I’ll let the Apostle Paul help me answer! In Ephesians

3:10, Paul states that the unseen beings in God’s crea-

tion are watching His church as God demonstrates His

wisdom through us. It seems that Shakespeare was

somewhat correct when he penned those famous

words, “All the world’s a stage.” As other humans and

those “invisible beings (see 2 Corinthians 4:18 and

Ephesians 6:12) watch our lives, they learn about God

and are either drawn to Him or given excuses to reject

Him. If you’re like me, you hope it’s the former!

How do we prepare ourselves to be approved work-

men on the stage of God’s grace play? Obviously, the

first step is hinted in the question itself. 2 Timothy

2:15 says we have to study. That implies a little more

depth than just casual reading. It means that we need

more Bible than just what our pastor and/or Sunday

School teacher give us each week. It means digging

deeper and discovering some truths on our own, and

even more than discovering them, applying them to

our lives. Psalm 1:2 encourages us to meditate on

God’s Word, and the words used illustrate a cow that

chews and partially digests its food over and over be-

fore completing the process. Those cows enjoy every

bite, and not just once! Christians can’t have a fast-

food diet when it comes to Bible study. Prepare for

Every Day Is An Audition Dr. Johnny M. Hunt

(Continued on next page)

February 2013 Page 7 SAY YOU SAW IT IN “CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY NEWS”

your turn on stage by diligently studying God’s Word

daily.

We also prepare ourselves by thinking about the other

players on the stage. Mahatma Ghandi is quoted as say-

ing, "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are

so unlike your Christ." Valid or not, Ghandi’s statement

should encourage us to realize that we are not the main

characters on the stage, God is! Or at least He will be if

we are surrendered to Him. Unfortunately, we are still

subject to the weaknesses of the flesh (see Matthew

26:41) and like egotistical screen stars we want top

billing.

As we rise each day from a healthy dose of God’s Word,

our focus will become less on ourselves and more on the

others around us who don’t know our Savior but

desperately need Him. We will also be prepared to face

those invisible, but every bit as real, demonic forces (see

Ephesians 6:11, 12) that want to destroy our usefulness

to the One Who lives inside us. Let’s be the best

supporting actors we can be while making the most of

Christ, our Bright and Shining Star!

Enjoying our preparation and rehearsals, we realize that

this life is not the final production. That will

occur around the Heavenly throne where we will be one

among a countless number of worshippers (see

Revelation 5:11-14).

I’m convinced that the better our preparation in this life,

the more we will enjoy our daily rehearsals and the

sweeter our eternal worship will be. I am more motivat-

ed than ever to tell others about Jesus

knowing that they might be right next to me on

opening night when the curtain is fully lifted and we

worship the One who is worthy to receive it.

Here is a phrase I often recall to help me stay

prepared: For anything I do to last, it must be

motivated by the love of God, empowered by the Spirit

of God and attempted for the

Glory of God! I pray that will

be your heartbeat too!

“21st Century Keys to EMPLOYMENT” By Lynne Saunders

UNEMPLOYED? There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Be Diligent and Never Give Up By Morgan Hill

I have had the pleasure to live in many different places throughout the years, but I have especially fond memo-ries of Oklahoma. In addition to finishing high school there, I also attended Oklahoma State University. Like many college students I needed to work several jobs in order to pay my way through school. One of my favorite jobs in those years was working at a local country club……. Any job that didn’t involve wearing a paper hat and a name tag was definitely a step in the right direc-tion for me. During that season of my life the Western States were experiencing an “oil boom”. It seemed that people from all walks of life were drilling for oil in hopes of striking it rich. At the country club I met several cowboys who were among the throngs of people trying to make money in the oil busi-ness. As time passed, I noticed that some of the cowboys that had regularly golfed at the club stopped coming. I learned that they failed to strike oil, so they quit drilling and closed down their businesses. As more time passed some of the oth-er cowboys drove up to the club in beautiful cars, wearing very nice clothes and handing out big tip money. Being young and curious, I asked how they became successful when the others failed. Their answers all had a common thread. One particular story I heard about went something like this: “When I first started I had to go to the bank to borrow the money for the drilling equipment. I was up to my neck in debt so I stayed out in the hot oil fields every day, working hard to find oil. I knew that some of my friends had gone bankrupt; 1 out of 2 was always taught that “cowboys don’t quit!” But one day I was ready to call it quits for good but I forced myself to drill down just a little deeper and that’s when I struck it rich. The crazy thing was that the distance between where I wanted to quit drilling and where I actually struck oil was only about five feet between success and failure. I struck oil because I refused to give up. That was the common thread in all of the stories I heard about. Given the chance to simply go home, they chose to push ahead, be diligent, and not give up.

That was the secret to their success. There is a passage of scripture that has stayed in my heart for many years. It’s from Proverbs 22:29 (KJV) –

“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before Kings, he shall not stand before mean (average) men.” Another way that I like to paraphrase this verse is, “Over the long haul, consistent hard work pays off.”

There are no real shortcuts that lead to lasting success. I be-lieve that God wants us to be diligent to push through during hard times and refuse to quit. Diligence is a character quality that I believe is essential to building a strong foundation for

biblical success.

SIN IS A PRISON LET’S BREAK OUT!

Conference 1: February 1-2, 2013 OR Conference 2: February 8-9, 2013

This year, the Johnny Hunt Men’s Conference begins its third decade! The theme for 2013, our 21st year, is “ESCAPE PLAN: SIN IS A PRISON; LET'S BREAK OUT!”

Pastor Johnny will share biblical truths on how sin imprisons us and how God provides an ESCAPE PLAN! All

of us at one time or another have experienced the cold, dark solitary confinement in which sin has us

imprisoned. The good news is that our cell has been unlocked, our chains have been broken, and our Savior

wants to set us free, for good.

God has promised to provide the way out. We need to learn to look for it, and even more, we need the

courage to accept God’s plan of escape. Join Pastor Johnny and thousands of other men as we plot our escape.

Even if your sin feels like Alcatraz, Jesus holds the keys to every cell.

It’s FEBRUARY and we are celebrating one year of cooking/nutrition classes at the Master’s Learning

Center at Papas Pantry! Come and learn with us in 2013!

Wouldn’t it be lovely to arrive home to the smell and convenience of a cooked meal at 5 pm, just waiting

for you? The crock pot, or slow cooker, is a way to do both. There are tricks to this and ways to make it

easy and economical. It is an excellent solution for busy schedules, healthy food choices, and delicious

warm stews for winter nights.

Our February class will be on the 20th from 9:30 to 12:30 at Papa’s Pantry. We will learn techniques and

tricks, recipes and ideas for stewed and slow cooked meals. We will have samples and recipes for 3

dishes. Our classes always include learning, lunch, and recipes to go home. We will also give

participants a packet of all of our recipes from last year’s classes.

So pull out that crock pot from the back of the cabinet and dust if off!. Possibly some of your “New

Year’s health goals have already fallen away. It is never too late to renew your commitment to a healthier

lifestyle with simple steps towards more activity and a more focused meal plan for you and your family.

See you on the 20th and enjoy this delicious soup in a pot or cooked in a crock!

Winter Lentil and Sausage Stew (serves 8… some to serve and some to freeze!)

1 package (16 oz) any color dried lentils

1 lb. low fat smoked turkey sausage, sliced and browned

in a skillet. Drain fat or pat with paper towels remove fat

4 stalks of celery, diced

4 large carrots, peeled and diced

½ large onion, peeled and diced

4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped

1 large can of petite diced tomatoes (26 oz)

1 box of low sodium chicken broth (32 oz) plus 8 oz.

water or 1 cup. (note: add up to 16 oz. of hot water as it

cooks, if needed)

1 t. Italian herb blend

2 c. chopped spinach, kale, or greens of choice

Rinse lentils and remove any debris mixed in the beans. Place

all ingredients in slow cooker/crock pot and cook on low for 8

hours.) Or place ingredients in a traditional large pot, bring to a

boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour or until lentils are

soft, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt

and pepper.

NOTE: Excellent served with whole wheat pasta or brown rice.

This provides a base for the stew to soak into and stretches your

meal.

Most Time Management organizers allow for you to schedule time for your appointed

priority. Reliance on mobile devices is not yet entirely reliable in situations such as

this… there is a great value for opening a tangible page and evaluating the information

on it. The use of electronics still somewhat limits the ability to absorb the entirety of

the concept.

Now, you need the PLAN! This is the time to look at the pages and time slots before

you in your organizer and write (commit) to implement the necessary steps in each day.

In the weight loss example we establish in the workshops at The Master’s Training

Center, time is taken for participants to jot down relevant details and plans for the

following eight weeks. Hence, a plan in the area of Physical…

There are 8 Impact Areas. Imagine how YOU could benefit from journaling in each

area in the realm of goal setting.

To complete the Preparation teaching, we must look at the PLAN:

P: Prioritize yourself as a project! (Yes, you now have permission!)

L: Look at the Book—if you are using an organizer, you must open it to refer to it daily

to maximize the power or the written goal and plan.

A: Take Action

N: Now….Right Now! Do not hesitate or delay…

YOUR PLAN FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IS CRITICAL.

TAKE ACTION NOW. Live life to the fullest!

For over 20 years Acquire The Fire has been more than a conference with

great teaching, more than a concert with the top Christian bands, and more

than you’ve ever experienced! Acquire The Fire is tens of thousands of

youth coming together over 27 hours to be set apart from the distractions and

influences of the world, long enough to encounter God in a total revolution

of the heart. Many teens today are spending their time, money, and passion

on pursuing “things” in order to bring them happiness. However, the best

“things” in life…are not things at all; true lasting joy is found in pursuing

that which is eternal.

ATF has created a unique environment that brings lasting life change

through compelling dramas, anointed worship, exciting Christian bands, and

powerful teaching and preaching…over 2.7 million teens have been reached

and will never be the same!
