Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar School ‘TopAchiever’ in this year’s GCSE examinations is LeoGorman, who achieved an outstanding 12 A grades,with all but one of his subjects being the top A*grade! Good Evening

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the entire Abbey communityI would like to welcome you all to this evening’s Prize Giving Ceremony.Tonight is an important occasion when we honour the achievementsof our students over the last academic year.

I would like to begin with a special word of congratulations to thestudents we honour tonight by awarding GCSE certificates and alsostudents in the categories of Best in Subject at GCSE and Top GCSEGrades. I also applaud the students whose other achievements haveenriched the last academic year.

I have great pleasure in welcoming back to his Alma Mater ourdistinguished guest speaker, Mr Paul Kinney. Paul was a pupil inthe Abbey between 1978 and 1985. He has since gone on to leada hugely successful and interesting career in the field of FinancialAdvisory Services and has acquired many qualifications and awards sinceleaving here. His career has been both international and exceptionallyinnovative. We are honoured that he has accepted our invitation toreturn to the Abbey tonight.

At the same time as congratulating our pupils, I would like to payparticular tribute to you the parents for the work that you have doneover the years and in particular for the enthusiastic and continuedsupport that you offer the school.

Lastly, on behalf of myself and the Board of Governors I would liketo express our appreciation for the work of our dedicated staff whowork so enthusiastically with your sons in enhancing all aspects oftheir education.

In conclusion, I hope that you all enjoy the presentations tonight and Iinvite you to join us for light refreshments in the school canteen at theend of the evening.

Guest Speaker: Mr Paul H. KinneyFCA, CFA, Dip FACC, BA (Hons)

2 The Abbey

Paul Kinney was a student at the Abbey Christian Brothers’ Grammar schoolfrom 1978 to 1985. He completed seven very successful years hereculminating in being nominated Head Boy in his final year.

His early career was based in Belfast with Coopers and Lybrand where heworked in an accountancy and business advisory capacity. He then spenttwo years with Coopers and Lybrand based in their New York Office. Sincethen he has travelled widely in North America, Europe and Asia buildingup his business advisory experience over a number of sectors includingreal estate, healthcare and education.

Following this experience, he was located more closely to home as aPartner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Belfast and a non executivedirector of Newry based First Derivatives Plc.

More recently he has established his own group of companies, IshtaraGroup focusing on consulting, outsourcing and investment opportunitiesin Europe, North America and Asia.

He has lectured widely and been a guest speaker at a number ofinternational conferences on auditing, accounting and risk management.

We are delighted to welcome back a much travelled and very successfulpast pupil.
