WHAT OBLIGATION DO WE HAVE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS?

Will the world be a better place for our having passed through it?

These are questions that, in reflective moments, may cross our

minds and give us pause. My position on these issues is rather

simple. The Future—whether in our personal lives or in broader

society—is being created by our actions today.

The future for children of poverty is usually dismal, unless

extraordinary interventions occur. Trapped by lack of

opportunity, education and basic resources, each generation is

destined to repeat the cycle. It IS possible to reimagine the future

for these children. Self‐sufficiency, productivity, dignity,

contributing to building a better world—all of these are possible.

Children of poverty can succeed and maximize their human

potential if the have the right combination of academic rigor,

values, structure, support and love.

Please enjoy the stories of courage, determination and resiliency

we share in this year’s Annual Report. Thanks to you, our children

are reimagining their futures—building a solid foundation for

themselves and for generations to follow.

Our Passion

Transforming the lives of impoverished children,

and giving them the skills to become self‐sufficient

and productive citizens, is difficult work. It requires

substantial time, significant resources and focused

programming. And, it requires the courage to keep

trying in the face of overwhelming odds.

Every day, Christel House students prove they are

up to these challenges – by giving back to their

communities, taking responsibility for their own

actions and making good decisions.

These students have dreams and aspirations; they

respect themselves and others. They have good

values, demonstrate ethical behavior and resist

negative peer pressure. They learn to achieve and

ultimately, to live a purposeful life.

As a result, their lives—and the lives of those gen‐

erations that follow—are being transformed forever.

RAJU SHAHANI

Christel House is the manifestation of a dream by visionary entrepreneur turned philanthropist Christel DeHaan. Christel has demonstrated that it is possible to create business wealth and human capital with the same principles in one lifetime. The Christel House model is longitudinal to bring about a real and sustainable difference to the society. Over the last three years, two hundred Christel House students have graduated from the school and are now at different stages of pursuing degree courses at prestigious Indian universities. The Work Study Program launched by Christel House in 2011 is deeply involved in shaping student careers by counseling them and their families on the academic disciplines they should pursue. Graduates from Christel House have taken up university courses in medicine, software engineering, aeronautical engineering, architecture, hospitality management and other competitive courses. This is an endorsement for the outcome based and consistent approach taken up by Christel House since its inception in 2001 in India.

Christel House graduates are working with the most reputed business corporations across several verticals in the industry. From impoverished and often abused homes, these children are now productive members of society living with dignity – with a seat at the table, as Christel DeHaan puts it.

As an organization, Christel House stands committed to the principles of quality, longevity and good governance in pursuit of its mission to break the cycle of poverty. We are proud of the academic leadership and achievements of our students in areas of competitive sports, arts and music.

We are thankful to our donors and to our staff, who have supported Christel House to be counted amongst the best educational institutions in Bangalore and Lavasa. The 2013 ‐14 Annual Report is a reflection of the sincere efforts made by everyone to take one more step towards breaking the cycle of poverty.

Sincerely,

— Deepthi M , Mother of Sanika A. J , 2th Grade , Christel House India , Bangalore

After my daughter joined Christel House India, her English has improved

significantly. She constantly practices to refine her speaking skills. She wouldn't

have improved so much if she was in any other school. Christel House India

gives all facilities, even medical care. She wants to be a pilot and I too dream

to see her as one. I wish to thank the school authorities and Christel Madam for

taking my daughter into this school.

— Simbu , Mother of Devi , 1st Grade , Christel House India , Bangalore

“I am very happy to have my son studying in Christel House India. I have tried

hard to get my son into this school. He studies well and is well behaved. He

asks his father and me to be cordial with each other at home. I feel proud that

my son is taught the right values, which I find difficult to teach him. Thanks to

the teachers and staff I see my son improving academically as well as being a

catalyst to change even at home. For this I immensely thank Christel madam.”

— Surekha Pramod Margale , Mother of Vivek Pramod Margale , 1st Grade , Christel House India , Lavasa

“I am very proud of Christel House. Earlier my son was reluctant to go to

school, now he is attending school regularly and he is very happy to come to

school every morning. We are very happy when he speaks in English because

at home no one knows the language. I have also started to understand English.

I would like to thank to Christel Ma'am as she has opened the school here. I

wish that she will continue her support and blessing.”

“My teachers used to say, dream big, desire it with your

whole being, the entire universe will come together to make

it a reality. I had always dreamed of becoming a doctor,

never knew how it would happen, but now suddenly, I am

going to be a doctor real soon!

My father works as a driver for a school and has to support 4

children. But both my parents were determined to make my

dream a reality and we moved to Bangalore. I remember I

came in late for admissions into I PUC and the prospect of

studying in English medium terrified me (and my teachers

were probably more scared than me). And as time went by

my teachers became my friends and my friends helped me

to learn.

I will always be grateful for the support and encouragement

I continue to receive from Christel House India.”

“My father left us before I was born, so my mom

struggled a lot. I spent 9 years in a hostel for deserted

children.” Deepak just completed his apprenticeship

training and has been hired as a fulltime employee by

Oberoi Hotels. His buoyant spirit and positive attitude

have contributed greatly to his success. “I'd tell other

Christel House students to dream big, and don't quit until

you make that dream come true.”

Deepak has learnt financial prudence. Deciding that too

much of his salary was going toward transportation

expenses, he purchased a motorbike on a monthly

installment scheme. He gives a part of his salary to his

mother for household expenses and has also set up a

savings account.

His future reimagined: “One of my dreams is to work on a

cruise liner. After that, I would like to be an entrepreneur

and start my own restaurant.”

He studies well and

is taught about right

and wrong, which

I as his mother find

difficult to teach him.”

“When I came to Christel House many

years ago, I had many dreams then, and

now those dreams are getting fulfilled. I

am working hard to reach my goal of

joining the Indian Air Force quickly.” Mal‐

dren Joyce is studying aeronautical

engineering at university, where she is

performing exceptionally well. “My

parents were against my idea of joining

the Air Force, because of their traditional

beliefs that it was not the right job for a

girl. But Christel House helped me

convince them.”

Her future reimagined: “I see myself as a

proud and respected woman working in

the Indian Air Force, giving part of my

future generations, setting them free from the vicious cycle of poverty. We set out looking for a partner to help us

make this dream come true. Christel House believed in our vision of building a truly inclusive city and has helped

us achieve this goal. Today Christel House Lavasa is the focal point of our engagement with the local population.

Both teaching and non‐teaching staff at Christel House Lavasa have displayed exemplary commitment and passion.

Four years ago, when the school opened its doors, many village parents were not inclined to enroll their children.

Today they are clamoring for a second Christel House school. Villagers have themselves seen the transformation.

They realize that with access to quality education, nutrition and healthcare, their children will have a bright future.

Christel House Lavasa today has not only transformed its students, most of whom are first generation learners, but

has also positively impacted entire families and communities. By working together to empower future generations,

Christel House and Lavasa Corporation are helping to build a better India for all.

Lavasa, India's first planned hill city, is being developed to be inclusive.

Critical for us in this process was the involvement and support of the

indigenous people whose living conditions were abysmal. Something

special was required to bring about a qualitative change in their lives. It called for more than just building good houses and providing gainful

employment.

Education had the potential to transform the lives of both current and

“Often students come to us beaten down and stereotyped,

which gives rise to a negative selfimage. I want them to see

their tremendous self-worth and stop viewing themselves as

‘at-risk’ and instead see themselves as ‘atpromise’— which

is exactly what they are. I want them to earn high school

diplomas and continue reaching for their goals.”
