Well Winter has really set in yet we continue to enjoy some quite good flying days in the weekends. There have been good turn outs on the flying fields, just need to rug up and away you go A good number of our club members do not have a wings badge, if you would like to achieve your wings badge please see me and I can sort this out for you, all members that fly ra-dio control should have a wings badge and we can fine tune the test to fit your plane for the likes of Tomboy's etc. Due to the increase of model helicopters at the club, the heli pad is going to be mowed a little larger so that 2 pilots can fly at the same time while still allowing plenty of room away from the RC planes and main strip. That's it from me, back to the heater Happy Flying Grahame Hart.

WINGS BADGE QUALIFICATION Please note that our president Grahame Hart has been appointed the coordinator for all Wings Badge training, tests and paperwork. So if you want to be tested, up graded etc please see Grahame and he will organize it for you.

Roy Gunner’s “Slicker” May it return !!

Minutes of CMAC committee meeting, Thursday June 11th 2015, 6B Middlepark Road, Upper Riccarton, 7.30pm.

Present: Grahame Hart, Trevor Henderson, Gary Burrows, Graeme Moffatt, Ian Harvey, Dave Jackson, Mark Venter, Lyn Rodway Apologies: nil; all present Minutes of last meeting: not approved – changes required as discussed. Business arising from last meeting: Nil; AGM planning all went according to plan. Correspondence in: Letter from John Ensoll re- wings badge debacle. Some member’s codes don’t reflect their abilities. Nothing else of consequence (such as invitation to publicise CMAC in local newspapers at various prices – declined) Correspondence out: 38 affiliations sent to the MZMAA; a good number for this time of the year. Half the membership cards handed out at the club night and half posted. One spelling mistake noted on one member’s card and secretary to get NZMAA secretary to remedy. Treasurer’s report: As of 30 May; current a/c $658.04, savings a/c. $3,361.77. Outging: af-filiation cheque to NZMAA of $2695.00. Subscriptions still coming in but only a few recalci-trant individuals who are annual recidivists. Section officers’ reports: Soaring: A date for the Cirrus Trophy (Formula 500 inter-club) is still being determined to fit in with other events. Dave Griffin is organising this. Peter France organised a ALES 200 event under what appeared to be marginal conditions that transpired to be pleasant Southerly flying. Only 2 members took. Part. Free Flight: Although conditions were marginal, several events were flown. Modest number for novice glider and vintage catapult. Looking forward to vintage precision and P30. Later Avon Trophy. Vintage: Not much activity; one or two competitors in good weather. Pylon: Meetings planned for adherents and had 4hr meeting during May. R/C Power: Good activity with rotary wing enthusiasts flying every Sunday. Maybe need a helipad. Some visitors to the field as well. A good atmosphere is noted on some lovely Autum-nal mornings. Young new member is also doing well and visitors flying safely. The electric fence around the strip is working shockingly well according to Grahame Hart. AOB: Wings badge abbreviations were explained by Ian H. All became clear (ie. AB = aerobatic!). Grahame Hart is to take responsibility for this aspect of the club and sort out who needs or wants what qualifications. Matching transmitter modes to instructors (and trainers) may need to be addressed. Torque and website were discussed but no problems reported (so long as the editor gets his pre-cious copy by the 20th of the month). Web master downloading interesting articles to the site. Meeting closed at 8:36pm with next meeting date TBA.

As seen on church notice boards Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help. Miss Charlene Mason sang "I will not pass this way again," giving obvious pleasure

to the congregation.

It looks like a meeting of the minds in behind the SIG “Kadet Senior Sport” of Maurice Bulford (center) flanked by Stu Grant left and “Legs 11” and whirly bird exponent Grant Fry

Club night The June meeting (boot sale) was a great opportunity to move stuff around, like from one workshop to another and I managed to move some gear on, mainly managed to get rid of a big box of old Aeromodellers and for those of you who missed our sale night, do not worry too much, I will be bringing more along to the next few meetings :-) Our next meeting (July) is "bring your favorite model" night. In addition we will be having a practice session for our indoor Helli event later on this year. All who have small Helli's of the type used in our competition, bring them along and let everyone get in some practice. And if you don't want anyone else to fly your helli, leave it at home!

As usual, 7 for 7:30, 7th July

Help required John Beresford is looking for some ether to power his thirsty diesels and he doesn’t want

to pay a Kings Ransom like he did when he got some from the chemist. Help Please Richard Matheson is looking for someone to help him get his foam B737-700 and a Air-

bus ready for a static display at next years Warbirds over Wanaka over to Richard “ It’s just a static display. They are not allowing me to fly them. They’re just putting me in the sport aircraft hanger as a static display. I just need to get the edfs working properly, the lights going and the retracts working properly.” email Richard if you can help at

PYLON RACING at the CMAC Stop bank site, thru the eyes of Big T.......23 May, 2015. Yes, it had to happen, the weather was good and although only one entrant we had a good afternoon of flying...why only one entrant ? Simply put two of us had other commitments that had put the flying to a lower priority. Work for one and family commitment for the other....those of us who are self employed know that model flying can take a low priority. James Blacklaw appeared with two models- one which had been previously raced and the other ready for test flying. James has now learnt that test flying starts with preparation at the work bench and everything needs to be checked, and double checked before any flying. His new model flew well but the carburettor came loose on the second flight and a rather quick landing saw the throttle system needing some minor repairs at the servo end- perhaps a failed solder joint or connection. His well tested model was then flown and 5 race times were established with success- all good times and reasonably consistent flying gave him a good score. Aside from a leaking glo-plug seal ( not common) then his old model performed well. James has now learnt the art of applying a small amount of down elevator as required between number one and number two pylon.......can make a big difference if you are likely to fly inside the pylon. Its nice to be racing with others but a lot can be learnt with an 'objective mind' even when flying solo. Results: Quickee Sports 500 James Blacklaw 1.58, 1.51.53, 1.48.50..1.50.65 total score 458.68 The model was a Great Planes ARF VIPER, and the engine a THUNDER TIGER 46 with a 9x6 prop......all basic equipment but providing for plenty of fun. We finished the day with James and Big T playing with the transmitter and adjusting trims, etc and James then doing a couple of timed practice flights. I think he has now learnt that flying style can be helped with careful adjustment on the transmitter and for those of you play-ing with a vee tail tail plane then it is very important to ensure that both elevators are carefully lined up and adjusted. All these changes did give a slightly different flying style and he was able to reduce his timed flight by approximately 7 seconds. Although a pylon course is triangular in shape there are many ways to attain a quick time....not always the shortest gives the best time as there are many control movements required, and tight cornering which slows the model; but a well trimmed model flown in an egg shape course can give the quickest times as the amount of control movements required is minimal. That’s why some of us enjoy pylon racing- its challenging.

As seen on church notice boards Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the base-

ment on Friday afternoon.

Stew Morse and his new Stomper af-ter preliminary test flights, went bet-ter than his Tom boy competition ef-fort!!!! But not so good in the Avon Trophy!

Bruce Weatherall and his new mini Vic Smeed “Madcap” “it handles the wind and turbulence well” says Bruce.

Our honorable power officer Graham Moffat with his new model. The below photo was done on his first taxi out for the test flight when it seemed to have mind of its own and veered left into one of our fixed seating's. Fortunately the only damage was to the prop. Model was returned to the workshop for a sort out which was resolved and model flew success-fully next weekend.

SO YOU WANT YOUR R/C POWER MODEL TO FLY BETTER? food for thought thru the eyes of Big T. An interesting subject that I believe can be broken down into 4 categories, and in no par-ticular order namely propeller, engine, model, and pilots attitude. Lets start with the propeller. You would assume that because the propeller is made in a mould that it should be con-sistent in terms of balance, pitch and blade thickness, however my experience indicates that al-though these factors are very important the most important item is whether the hole in the hub of the propeller is centrally located.....most times they are incorrectly positioned and no matter how much time you spend trying to balance the propeller nothing will fix the incorrect hole position. The solution is to overbore the hole into the correct position and then use a sleeve to make eve-rything fit. Even the more recent and well known grey propellers from the USA have problems with the prop hole. The engine. Unless you can properly tune an engine then your flying efforts could end up in frustra-tion. You are better to learn your engine tuning on the engine test stand and understand how the carburettor should be tuned....it is easy to learn, but it does take time and if done incorrectly will always beat you at the flying field. Always check your glow plug- they do have a life and in the ideal world you should get into the habit of changing your plug say after any lean run or after 10-15 flights. Between flights always remove the plug and check the colour of the base- it should be tan in colour, and if no colour evident then you can run the engine leaner, or if the colour is black rather tan then you should question the age of the plug, or richen the carburettor slightly- generally a dark colour on the base of the plug indicates a lean engine setting. The model. Always start with the centre of gravity and the control throws as per the manufacturers recommendation- his knowledge of the model should never be ignored, but never forget that we all have individual preferences when it comes to flying of the model...what suits him invariably may not suit you. After properly trimming your model the next item should be to learn all of its character-istics- perhaps it has slight up trim which generally indicates a nose heavy model, or some other feature that requires attention.....try and analyse what your model is doing and make corrections accordingly....you need to be objective when trimming a model. Trimming a model can take time but the better the model has been built, including alignment, the easier the model should be to trim. Pilots attitude. An interesting one as there are days that we don't always feel our (me included) 100% self and we should either have stayed at home or the model should have been left on the work-bench or in the boot of the car. We all socialise and having a few too many wines or beers the night before we go flying can have an effect, and generally results in slower reaction times. Flying a model aircraft is really no different to driving our car on the open road- there will always be responsibilities and we should always be aware of our abilities on that day.

Soaring by glider guider peter france On 31 May a keen bunch of “tossers” got together to do some F3K tasks. Part of the reason was to keep Alex company in his build-up to the world champs in mid July. F3K was also an NDC event that month. Or maybe it wasn’t. The MFNZ calendar appeared to be in a state of flux. But that didn’t change the third reason, which was that we really enjoyed the out-ing. It turned out to be good conditions for DLG. A light NE teased some bubbles of lift that were flyable but rarely turned into truck-lifter thermals, so good but challenging conditions. Not pictured below, Rob’s son Michael tried out DLG for the first time, and was doing a great job. He can’t wait for his Dad’s new glider to arrive, so he can inherit his Dad’s Twister.

On 14 June we had a good turnout and a fantastic Canterbury winter day. Very little NE wind, not cold, sunshine, and enough lift to be enjoyable without being super-easy. Once a wee snafu with the revised NDC calendar was sorted out, we got stuck into NDC Ales Radian com-petition. Amazing how much entertainment (and good ther-malling) you can get out of a $200 foamie, aka the ‘chilly bin’. Results were very tight, only two raw-score points separated the first four plac-ings. Rob Ward took top honours; Rob has flown for years but has joined up with the CMAC soaring crowd recently, and is bursting with enthusiasm. Afterwards we intended to try out some F5J, where you get extra points for stopping the motor at a lower altitude. We’ve never run that style of comp, but it sounds like a real test of skill, rewarding those who can read the air, and punishing those who just push their luck. As it turned out there were some technical problems and the afternoon was getting on, so we just flew the big electric gliders for fun. Not such a bad thing on a beautiful afternoon. One comment on altitude limiters. All brands are suitable for ALES200. Almost all brands will also do ALES123 and F5J. However the exception is the CAM device, which is one of the few available in NZ.

Oh to be young and capable. 12 year old George Turner with his own built model out of what was laying around, and it flies beautifully. Electric of course and seeing some of his landings we could learn a thing or two from George though he did try a spot landing very close to the feet of our presi-dent (NO NO George, not the way to im-press) Second photo is George on his way to emulate Alex Hewson in free style aerobatics with his 3D foamie.

Sunday 14th june by dave Jackson Gary shame you missed a fantastic morning – it was absolutely perfect for flying. (my excuse was the bed tied me up and it was 10am before I could break the rope!!! OBGGG) There were 7 P30s on show today – it was wonderful to see so many in attendance and they all flew well. Roy had a Teacher’s Pet, which he was flying on the old Grey FAI rubber, and achieved by far the highest altitude of all the models and consistent flights of around 90 seconds. John Beresford had his Piccolo going well, on only its second outing it is showing lots of prom-ise. With a blast tube and the ability to put in a lot more turns this is one to watch out for in the future. Bruce Weatherall could not get his Tomboy P30 going today at all (it was flying very well last week!) and resorted to his Pinocchio P30 to record times. Bruce Bonner was finding this rubber lark a bit fiddly and only managed one flight be-fore reverting to his power models. Lynn and Stew both had problems with trim and were not able to make the best of the calm conditions. Those calm conditions were perfect for my Long Run model (4x1/8 and 1600-1800 turns) and the 2 minute max was quite achievable with the 90sec+ motor runs I was getting. It is not really fair having a model capable of 2:30 still air in a 2 minute max contest. Vintage precision was flown by Roy, Lynn, Stew and Bruce. It was great seeing the power models circling around and landing just meters from the launch point. The scores were pretty close especially considering most of the models used had no bonus. Altogether a fantastic morning for free flight! Results P30 Bruce Bonner 61,00,00 total 61 John Beresford 63,64,92 total 219 Lynn Rodway 67,83,66 total 216 Bruce Weatherall 32,46,40 total 118 Roy Gunner 80,97,90 total 257 Stew Morse 46,42,45 total 133 Dave Jackson 120,120,120, 180 (1st fly-off 180max) Total 540 Vintage Precision Lynn (Keil Kraft Pirate 1948) 56 (58), 64(66), 112 (70) total 194 Stew M (Tomboy 1950) 88(88),72(72),84(84) total 244 Bruce W (Sporty 1950) 27(27),47(47),37(37) total 111 Roy (Sky Scooter 1950) 55(55),70(70),93(87) total 212

Avon trophy 21 june Loutrel Sportster does it again, admittedly with better luck than the other sterling com-petitors, who by their own admission “it was not their finest hour/morning” what with engine overruns, broken model (engine broke off after an arrival) and lost model. It was without the undisputed top dogs missing (Dave “P30” Jackson, John Last years winner “Loutrel Sportster”. Ensoll and Mark “Loutrel Sportster” Venter.) Which while having his troubles OBGGG again managed the top percentage score of 86% (233/270 ) The weather was not as bad as predicted but still bl—dy cold though it got better during the morning. Items of note re the competitors, Roy Gunner after his first flight overrun of his immaculate Slicker took his eyes off it while climbing the fence and lost its line and therefore returned modeless .(name and number was on it so hope springs eter-nal a la Colin Duthie) Bruce Weatherall first attempt at putting in a score failed miserably with his tail plane jumping its stop and causing a very rapid arrival at the ground breaking the nose off his open power ship (I think he said OH BUGGER) So out came his vintage precision model 1941 Request and proceeded to put in a very respectable first score of 88 (including bonus 9) things were looking good to knock the Loutrel Sportster into the relegated lower placings BUT NO the second flight had that dreaded (to vintage precision) finding lift on the glide to finally score +4 after all the deductions came into play. Bruce’s 3rd flight was a return to normality with a 75 and there goes what might have been. Stew Morse got in 3 flights but because he was using a open power ship with a target of 540 to achieve 100% 196/540 36% doesn’t cut the custard. The other potent potential winner was Lynn Rodway with his potent 1/2A power ship which normally gives him no grief in maxing out But not today with 2 engine over runs in round 1 to score a zero left his chances in tatters. Much muttering by Lynn about his unreliable timer (the one on the model of course!!) Which left the 2 times nationals winning and several times Avon trophy winner Loutrel Sporster model flyer to sneak home (thanking his lucky stars that the guns weren’t in atten-dance) with a score (86%) which in the past might have got him 5th place.

Vintage report. 17 May 2015 supplied by Mark Venter I put in one flight with my Woody’s Wagon for 1/2E Texaco - not very successful unfor-tunately, for some reason I thought by batteries had run out but afterwards found that I probably still had about 2 minutes flying time, not that I could have gotten anywhere near the 12 min-utes max though. Score 442 Stu & I both put in three flights for A Texaco, I flew my 35 year old Comet Clipper managing only one max for the three flights and Stu flew his Simplex.

Poopy puppy pooper scooper reports I have it on good authority that “us who grow old” are not immune to believing that we

are bullet proof, or maybe, that as we grow old we start going backwards (ultimately end-ing up in nappies) as case in point I have been informed by “Honest John” via the illustri-ous editor that he is falling apart after a accident “BODY SURFING” and hitting his head in the sand which has led to his increased liability to crashing his model (he did so on Fri-day May the 29th) due to a lack of feeling in his thumb and fore finger right hand (fly's mode 2) and looks like that he will need a T/X tray to even fly his trade mark Tomboy. “BODY SURFING” I ask you, is this some thing you do when you are retired and the out side temperature is about 8degrees C, yes I know that the surf has been great of late BUT!!

Proof of how the pilot of “Honest John’s” model thought of his piloting skills on Fri-day the 29th. Seen in the photos —shear terror and though it is hard to see there is something on the canopy (is it perspiration or Vomit ?) after the hairy ride which ended up with said pilot hitting the escape capsule cartridges (2 of) so he can live to fly another day in the hands of either a different controller or a repaired “Honest John” time will tell.

Tomboy rules for 19th july “300th club” 1. 3 flights of 5 minutes (300secs) 2. Flights of over 5 minutes will have the extra time deducted from the 300 3. A bonus of 10 will be allocated to each flight (to be used as much of if required to

achieve the magical 300) for landing within the designated 20 meter circle (the model must be stopped with the nose in the circle)

4. Electric models are allowed 2 1/2 minute motor run (150 seconds) 5. The winner will be the competitor with the time closest to 900 seconds (there can be no

totals over 900!!!) 6. All competitors must not abuse the CD but may offer bribes.

A good news story On Sunday 7th June Colin Duthie was having fun by getting his old (and I mean old) venerable Flying Aces “Petrel” out for an outing, but as the wind had swung to the south (and all the FF boys had shifted to give themselves more room before the stop bank pine trees) Colin thought that the “Petrel” wouldn’t make the trees. Wrong, this model (which does fly beauti-fully ) decided that Colin needed to follow the mob and proceeded to park its self up the top of the pine tree. Three of us went to find it but just couldn’t see it (OBGGG watched with the Binoculars and gave a good location on it but didn’t know if it was in the first row or the next 4 rows.) We gave up!!!! Colin went back on the next Wednesday and spotted it about 40feet up in the first row (great spotting Colin) but he left it there on the hope that the rubber bands would perish and the fuselage would come down, after all the Mills 1.3 was too good a motor to lose. I have just had a email from Colin (17th June) “ Hi Gary—went out to the field today and the scruffy old Flying Aces Pertrel was sitting on the ground with only some rips in the tissue so all is well”

Well Colin, I hope that you will recover the wings in bright “Rescue Or-ange” so that we who are sight chal-lenged will see it next time it goes walk-about. Apparently this isn’t the first time it has gone walkabout!!!! No, not Colin’s actual model

Indoor report for the 14th June. Event for N.D.C being Hanger Rat. Kay, Nev and Bill were in attendance and I was looking forward to the flying these diffi-cult things. A Hanger Rat would in my opinion be the one event that will test you as far as get-ting good duration times from. I was first to fly and even using newly prepared rubber the same old problems occurred again. I shortened a motor and tried again this time hugging the ceiling then into the stage and crashed. Further flights proved hopeless. Sharing some thoughts with Nev we started to do a total retrim and times started to climb. Things were looking up but flying time was running out, it was now Kay’s turn, knowing how much improvement we had made, the trim was duplicated in her model. On Kay’s last flight of the day seemed to follow the same pattern of flying until I looked at the stop watch to read off a time of three minutes and ten seconds. So now at least Kay is back in the three minute club. Times.

Kay. 2 min 18 sec.& 3 min 11 sec. Bill. 2 min 29 sec.& 2 min 44 sec. Nev. 1 min 47 sec

& 1 min 52 sec

NEXT MEETING is the 12TH JULY event F.1.L.

Editorial Manure. # 128, many more to come

I have just been going to our library lately and taking out modeling magazines which are of interest e.g. RCM&E, RC Model World, Q&E FI, and RC Model flyer just because the cost of buying them is just prohibitive and they only cover a small percentage of what interests me. In saying that, I do like to keep abreast of trends and the build photos, of the few projects that are sometimes featured, just to see how others go about doing things, you can learn a lot by carefully looking at the photos.

There is a good article in Model Airplane News (Nov. 2014)about disposing of lipo batteries.

I believe that while our Avon trophy rules have served us well over the years it maybe time to revisit them to give all models a chance of winning not just a small few classes which by the way their rules are devised give their model a more than even chance of winning. What do you think chaps.

OBGGG (Avon trophy winner for the umpteenth Time)

Nearly ready to cover. I hope that their covering skills are better than mine!!! Hoping to occupy by the wife’s birthday in late October nearly 5 years late!!! Seems to be like my building pro-gram !!!
