Paper from Old Jeans Christ Church, Stamford February 2009

Christ Church Access and Learning Centre is a special place in Stamford which works with The Bluecoat Children's Centre, allowing children from the community to become involved in

various arts activities. On this occasion, the nearby Bluecoat Primary School made its facilities available to 15 young people aged 9 - 11 to learn about papermaking over a two day period.

The work was done on Monday and Wednesday, (so that the paper had time to dry on Tuesday) The children learned how to recycle denim from discarded blue jeans, and

progressed on to making paper from the pulp. . We then used these papers to construct bowls, a large vessel, and small A6 format books.

The large vase, 90cm (3 foot) high, now stands in the reception area of

the school. It is made of 100% recycled denim material, and has bits of old jeans (pockets, labels,

loops) incorporated into its structure, which has dried as hard as a piece of wood! All of the little

books which the children made have a bit of old jeans on the front cover, too. Inside is a poem about snow, a photograph of the group,

and many of the A5 sheets of denim paper which the children made during the programme.
