YTHE WEEKLY WORD“A Song in the Air”

Looking for a church home? All are warmly welcomed at Christ Church. We invite you to stop by our “I’m New Here” table downstairs in the Gathering Hall where you can find out more about our congregation. First time guests can also pick up a special welcome gift there. If you would like to join the Christ Church family today, you may do so either by professing your faith in Jesus Christ, or by transferring your membership from another Christian congregation. Simply fill out a new member card which may be found in the Sanctuary pew racks and bring it with you as you come to the front to meet the pastors during the closing music at any of our services. If you have not yet been baptized, we will be happy to recognize your decision today as well as arrange for a convenient time to talk with you about the meaning of that sacrament before scheduling it for one of our upcoming worship services. For more information about our programs, staff and beliefs, please visit our website at www.christchurchsl.org.

by Pastor Chappell Temple

She grew up singing with her sisters, her strong alto voice easily settling upon the natural harmonies that complemented the sweet sound of her four siblings as they visited from church to church in the central Texas countryside. But even after marrying and moving away from her family, singing continued to be an integral part of her faith, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Her favorite secular song was clearly “Silver Bells,” and though she never actually met Bing Crosby... or traipsed along snow-crunched city sidewalks...it didn’t stop her from doing a duet with him whenever it played on the radio... “Ring-a-ling (ring-a-ling), hear them ring (ting-a-ling), soon it will be Christmas Day.”

When it came to carols, however, there was one song that similarly made her seasonal hit list every year. For within the 1905 Methodist hymnal that she grew up with was a “new” melody composed by the gifted Wesleyan University professor who was charged with assembling that songbook to be used by churches across the country both big and small, from New York to Nacogdoches.

Based upon a poem by the novelist Josiah Holland written for an 1874 Sunday School Journal, Karl Harrington fashioned a tune around each phrase, merging both words and music as a melody quickly came to life:

“There’s a song in the air! There’s a star in the sky! There’s a mother’s deep prayer and a baby’s low cry! And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing, for the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!”

To be sure, the song sounds a little schmaltzy today, and I halfway expect an announcer to precede it with the words, “This is an all-skate.” But if I close my eyes and listen hard, I can still hear my mother’s alto voice gliding effortlessly over the melody line:

“We rejoice in the light and we echo the song, that comes down through the night from the heavenly throng.”

Whatever your personal tastes or style may be, we’re being blessed in these weeks by some outstanding musical talent on loan from God. For in the words of Josiah Strong, that “song from afar” really has swept over the world.

So let “the beautiful sing” indeed! No doubt my mom will be harmonizing with you in heaven.

2016 STEWARDSHIP CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT

FINISHING STRONG 2015 BUDGET REPORT

As a thank you to all who turned in a pledge card for 2016, please visit the Gathering Hall today to pick up the Annual Christ Church Christmas ornament. Pledge cards are still available to be filled out and can be found around the church, outside the finance office, and online at www.christchurchsl.org/give.

As we come to the end of the year, we are thankful for all those whose faithful stewardship of their resources has enabled us to do amazing things in the name of the Lord through Christ Church in 2015. Like most congregations, we are entirely dependent upon the voluntary giving of our members for 100% of our budget, and similarly, in years past a large proportion of our financial needs have been met in the last month of the year. The amount which remains for us to completely fulfill our 2015 operating budget of $3.01 million is approximately $505,015, which includes the amount of unpaid pledges year to date. As the Lord enables you, please prayerfully consider how you may help close this gap with either the fulfillment of your pledge, or even an extra gift if possible. Please note that in order for you to receive a tax benefit from your gift, it must be received prior to January 1, 2016. Gifts may be dropped into the offering plate, brought to the church office, or made on-line (up to midnight December 31) through our secure website. IRS rules also allow that gifts charged to a credit before the end of the year will count for 2015 even if the bill is not paid until 2016.
