In November of last year, a ceremony took place in our sanctuary in which two Christ UMC members were awarded Quilts of Valor for their service to our country. Quilts of Valor is a project begun by Catherine Roberts of Seaford, Delaware to honor and welcome home American war veterans. She was inspired to begin this project after her son’s deployment to Iraq. Several quilting groups throughout the country have adopted the project, including the ones in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. To date, 117,210 quilts have been awarded with approximately 285 coming from our local quilters. The quilts awarded at our church began at our Christ UMC Family Gathering last summer where an opportunity to learn quilting was offered. In this class squares of red, white and blue were sewn and then assembled by Bonnie Johnson. The quilting was completed by Faye Tarleton and Rosa Little. Those receiving the quilts were Louis Mayo and Holley Midgley. Louis served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was based at Kimpo Air Field in South Korea, near the 38th parallel, the closest base to the main line of resistance between North and South Korea. He was a member of the 5th Air Force and 67th Reconnaissance Wing of this newly independent branch of the military. This was the first time F86 Sabre Jets and rotary wing helicopters were used in war. Louis was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal and the South Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Holley served in the Army Air Corps as a bombardier on a B24 bomber during World War II and was shot down by a German Mig, resulting in his being jailed in Bari, Italy. After the Germans seized the Italian military installations, the prisoners were taken by General Rommel and eventually loaded onto boxcars and sent to Stalag Luft 3 where Holley was held until 1943. Midgley was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Middle East Theatre Medal and 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, one for each of 5 missions into enemy territory.

Louis served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was based at Kimpo Air Field in South Korea, near the 38th parallel, the closest base to

the main line of resistance between North and South Korea.

Midgley was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the

WWII Middle East Theatre Medal and 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, one for each of 5 missions into enemy territory.

SERIOUSLY?!?!NEWSONG SERMON SERIESBy Jim Kinder, NewSong PastorHas anyone told you that you take life too seriously? Just relax, go with the flow. Everything is going to be fine. You are so uptight. There is no need to stroke out. Or is there? There are times when we take ourselves too seriously and then there are times when we are not serious enough.

I think there are times when Jesus would tell me to “Chill.” However, there are times when I think He would look at me and say, “No, seriously, I want you to…” Join us in NewSong this June for ‘Seriously.’

JUNE 2015

By Jeff Spiller, Senior Pastor As you receive this newsletter, I will be attending our Annual Conference gathering in Montgomery. All of our Christ UMC clergy and six of our laypersons will attend. It is an important conference as we will be electing delegates to represent our conference at General Conference in Portland, Oregon in May 2016. We will also send those elected to Jurisdictional Conference in 2016 as well. Please pray for our Conferences and our United Methodist Church as important decisions are made. Let us remain true to scripture and the leading of God’s Spirit.

It is going to be a meaningful and busy summer. Begin praying for our congregational support of Dixon Elementary School as we again provide school supplies for the teachers and students.

Please also pray for our, once again, hosting of the Global Leadership Summit in August. Make plans to be present August 6 & 7 for this great event. We will still have our August Homecoming Sundays the first four Sundays of the month.

The fifth Sunday of August and first Monday of September, we will host a Regional Bible Conference with Dr. Ben Witherington as our teacher and preacher. Ben is a world-renowned Biblical scholar and has appeared on the History Channel many times to share his knowledge of the Bible and Biblical times. He teaches at Asbury Seminary in Kentucky. You will regret it if you miss this event.

Let’s all be faithful with our prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness in these summer months. Serving Him faithfully,

“And may you be completely faithful to the LORD, our God. May you always obey His decrees and commands, just as you are doing today.” 1 Kings 8:61

By Michael Rollins, Middle School Minister I cannot believe that summer is already here! I still feel the rush of excitement that I felt when I was in middle school and high school. That feeling of knowing that I had the entire summer of no school and full of amazing trips with my family or my church. I am super excited that we will be taking our middle and high school students to Camp Lee this summer. One of my favorite trips my church took was Camp Lee and it was a blast every year! Camp Lee is a great place to learn more about God and to grow closer with fellow students. There will be lot of fun activities such as a rock slide, zip line and ropes course, plus much more. We have some other awesome opportunities for students this summer that will help them have fun, grow in their faith and serve our community and our world. We would love for you to encourage a student you know to get plugged in to at least one event this summer and into our student ministry here at Christ UMC. Don’t forget to stay up to date with us through our text messages and christumcyouth.com. You can also register for our summer events at christumcyouth.com/summer.

By Ashley Walker, Early Childhood Minister In just a few short weeks, our church will be full of laughter and excitement as children take an amazing time-travel journey to experience stories of the Bible. Children will discover how God’s unconditional love makes a difference in every story, at every time, including your story right now! What better way to spread God’s love than helping with His children! I don’t know about you, but I want to serve God in areas that I know are important to Him. The Bible tells us that children are a blessing from God. There is no confusion about how important they are in His eyes. While Jesus was on Earth, He was always welcoming to the children. In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Volunteering with the Children’s Ministry might not always be the easiest. In fact, it can be quite unpredictable at times. I believe it can be one of the most rewarding opportunities for us as Christians to serve. When you show God’s love to these children, you are influencing generations to come, for they are our future. Someday they will become parents and leaders themselves. It is our job to train them to be followers of Christ for this is how God intended for His children to live.

THINK CLEARLY ABOUT WHAT YOU EAT By Rick Warren - For more information, visit danielplan.com When Daniel refused to become unclean by eating the food of King Nebuchadnezzar’s court, he made a deal with the guard: “‘Test us for ten days,’ he said. ‘Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare us with the young men who are eating the food of the royal court, and base your decision on how we look.’ [The guard] agreed to let them try it for ten days. When the time was up, they looked healthier and stronger than all those who had been eating the royal food.” (Daniel 1:12-15 TEV). Daniel didn’t just eat haphazardly, accepting whatever was placed in front of him. He was intentional about what he ate. When you think clearly about what you eat, God empowers you to continue to make good choices. Clear thinking leads to self-control. By thinking ahead of time, you can prepare so that you won’t have a “food emergency.” This enables you to eat healthy snacks that you packed ahead of time and you won’t crash in the afternoon because you ate a greasy fast-food lunch. Instead, you’ll be on top of your game, ready to do whatever it is that God calls you to do. Being mindful and conscious, thinking clearly and exercising self-control, you can become Daniel Strong.

WHAT WILL YOU DO THIS SUMMER?By Jim Kinder, NewSong PastorWhat will you do this summer for you, for your family, for your church? For the past five years, Christ UMC has hosted the Global Leadership Summit. This is a two-day, live-streamed Leadership Conference that we broadcast from the Christ Center. People from across Mobile and the surrounding community gather to learn, to worship and to grow. Personally, each year I am inspired in three distinct areas. First, I am inspired personally. I lead in a number of different venues. I lead NewSong. I lead in my home. I lead a small group. I lead a group of runners. And I have to lead myself because I often get off base. Every year, I gain at least one new leadership tool that I will use throughout the year. I’m able to use the newly acquired tool again and again.

I am also inspired missionally. Every year there is at least one Summit speaker who is making a big difference in our world. They are laying it all on the line to accomplish the mission of the Church. Every time I hear

their stories I am inspired to think about what I can do locally. What my family can do right here in Mobile. Their story impacts my story and it gets my feet moving.

Finally, I am always refreshed spiritually at the Summit. There is something about 150,000 people across the United States and Canada worshiping together that is powerful! God moves in incredible ways. I think He honors our sacrifice of time and blesses us in incredible ways. And sometimes, I simply have to be reminded that what we are doing for the Kingdom of God, for my family, for my personal life, all those disciplines, all those sacrifices are simply worth it.

Do yourself a favor, take August 6-7 as your personal days. Invest $89 in yourself and attend this year’s Global Leadership Summit. You can register at christumcmobile.com/summit.

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | AUGUST 6-7

MOVING FORWARD INTO SUMMERRob Blackwell, Church AdministratorAs we move into the summer months, giving sometimes dips as people are on vacation and traveling on Sundays. Since this is our first summer after implementing FORWARD, it’s a good time to review the impact of the “summer slump.” Reduced giving during the summer months always puts a strain on the budget; however, since FORWARD giving also supplies the funds for the Seven Year Plan, reduced giving can cause us to get behind on our debt paydown schedule as well. If it’s difficult to keep up with your giving goals during the summer, you may want to try our Online Giving capability. Whether you turned in a commitment card or not, it’s a great way to keep on track with the goals you made to move up the Giving Ladder. You can give from wherever you are and you can even set up a recurring weekly or monthly gift that matches up with your intended giving goals. It’s easy to do, you can turn it on and off at any time, and it tracks your giving for you so you know where you are at any time. To get started with Online Giving, take any of the following steps:n Go to the Online Giving page at christumcmobile.com/give, ORn Install the Pushpay app (with the red & white “P” logo) from the Google Play Store or App Store, ORn Text “christumc” to 77977.

ORGAN UPDATEThank you for your overwhelming generosity.

TOTAL GIVEN $129,500

We expect to have the new organ installed this summer. In the fall, we will have a dedication concert where we will have the memorial

book and plaque available.

And just what is Safe Haven? Safe Haven is a place of refuge and safety for homeless women on the weekends held at Christ United Methodist Church on one Saturday each quarter. These ladies are sheltered at night at McKemie

Place where they have a warm bed, the opportunity to be clean and have a meal and, most importantly, to have safety and security as they sleep. During weekdays they leave the only place that they can call “home” and go to jobs, training, or a local homeless day center. On weekends, these ladies were subjected to rain, cold, heat and predators, since other assisting agencies were closed on weekends. After many of these ladies ended up in hospitals due to sickness or horrible assault, local officials reached out to churches throughout the area to provide a safe haven for these unfortunate women. The United Methodist Women at Christ UMC have been among those who have answered the call to help these ladies, and, with the assistance of the church, provide transportation, food and activities in the Christ Center one Saturday per quarter.

And, no, the funding for these activities does not come from the church budget. It comes from donations made by the women closely involved with this important work—and from cans! Yes, those aluminum cans that you may spy in a corner of the church library are recycled for cash in order to help provide snacks, reading and supplementary materials to bring some pleasure to these ladies. Plus, in June the ladies will be serenaded by the Voices of Hope, a fun group of singers from our church whose ministry is focused on bringing music to those who are in assisted care facilities.

If you would like to assist with the blessings given to and received from the ladies of McKemie Place/Safe Haven, please contact Judy Vajgrt, 251.602.5344 or Betsy Holland, 251.344.8836.

n Village | For ages 6 months - 17 months*n Our Time | For ages 18 months - 3 1/2 years* *These classes are for children with a parent, grandparent or caregivern Imagine That | For ages 3 - 5 years oldn Young Child 1, 2, 3 and 4 | For ages 5 - 7 years old

Over 20 years, nearly 6,000 young lives have been touched by Mrs. G. Many families have joined Christ UMC after first attending Kindermusik. When German and Asian parents expressed a need for learning English, Kindermusik served as the catalyst for our English as a Second Language Ministry. Mrs. G serves as an encourager and resource to mothers with parenting questions and has often been the first to notice developmental issues with children.

Mrs. G has been recognized as an outstanding teacher by Kindermusik International with the designation of Maestro Teacher. Next time you see Mrs. G., be sure to say thank you for 20 years of amazing ministry! - Thanks, Ralph Gudeman - Mrs. G’s proud husband

On Sunday, May 24, Stephen Ministry at Christ UMC held an Open House to explain what Stephen Ministry is and what Stephen Ministers do. You may

have thought about coming to the Open House but it just did not work with the plans you already had for the day. No problem, there is still time. Plans are still being completed and there are some slots left for the training that will begin in September 2015.

Would you like to know more about Stephen Ministry or about becoming a Stephen Minister at Christ UMC? If so, please contact Donna Alexander at 251.342.0462. Your call is confidential.
