Looking Back—Moving FORWARD

page 8-9

We were honored and felt led by Christ to be asked to help start a new church in west Mobile. The day

we chose a name for the church, Christ was easily the first choice. One of our favorite memories from that first summer is the Sunday evening picnics at Langan

Park. Jeff would play the guitar and we would sing the old hymns.

AUGUST ‘15 HOMECOMINGBy Jeff Spiller, Senior Pastor I’ve been praying for some very specific things as we begin these special five Sundays in August:

n I’m praying every member, who is able, will attend worship every Sunday in August—whether it’s Sanctuary, NewSong or our Evening Worship service. I will preach in the Sanctuary the first three Sundays a series titled Discipleship Essentials.

n I’m praying that Sunday, August 16 will be like Easter in terms of attendance! I’ve designated this Sunday as RECOMMITMENT SUNDAY. This will be an opportunity for all of us to renew our commitment to Christ and the Church. Each person will receive a card to sign and take with you to keep as your reminder. This will happen in each of the six services this Sunday.

n I’m praying that you will find someone to invite and bring to worship on All Music Sunday, August 23. The Circuit Riders and other special musical guests will lead in worship in the Sanctuary.

n I’m praying that each of you will not miss our Bible Conference on Sunday, August 30 and Monday, August 31. World-renowned scholar, Dr. Ben Witherington, is our preacher and teacher for this time together. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!

n Join us in praying for our nation at 7:14 a.m. each day. Set your electronic devices as a reminder to join others in our community and our country as we unite in lifting our concerns, hopes and dreams for this great country of ours.

I’m praying that you will be a participant in this important and exciting Homecoming month.

In Christ,

Jeff

WATER FOR LIFE UPDATEBy Jim Kinder, NewSong PastorImagine growing up in a town where going to church to worship Jesus was a bad thing. In fact, if you went to worship, you would be considered an outcast. You could lose your job, your home and your family. For the people of Gnangoussou, Ivory Coast, they do not have to imagine this. This is their life and we don’t think it should be that way.

Water for Life began with the clear, Biblical belief that every person should have access to the Gospel of Jesus Christ—to Living Water. When we

heard about this village in the Ivory Coast, we said, “ENOUGH!” Somebody should do something and that somebody is us!

St. John UMC and Christ UMC partnered together in the Water for Life campaign at the beginning of this year. Through this prayer and fundraising campaign, we believe God is going to use us to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all of Gnangoussou. Thanks to your generosity, enough funds were raised to build a church and provide a water well for the village of Gnangoussou.

Thanks to your commitment to this vision, we will officially open the Methodist Church in Gnangoussou, providing Living Water for the entire community on September 13, 2015. We will open a water well that same day, quenching everyone’s thirst for clean water.

As we enter into this home stretch, now is the time we need you to bolster your prayer efforts.

n Pray for open hearts to receive the message of Jesus Christ. n Pray for the presentation of the Gospel in French through The Jesus Video.n Pray that the construction projects will be completed on time and within budget.n Pray for each of our team members and their families: Hannah Wilson, Celeste Eubanks, Leah Musgrove, Dan Roach, Jeff Trauthwein, Tom Grafton, Earl McKinnell, Larry Crawley, John Russell and Jim Kinder. n Pray that the revival fires started in Gnangoussou will spread to Mobile, Alabama and beyond.

Grab a Water for Life bracelet as a reminder to continually pray for this trip. Nothing happens without prayer!

with Pastor Jeremy

n The Study of Genesis with Pastor Jeremy Steele6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. | Hospitality Room | Genesis, the book of origins, takes us through the amazing beginning of the story of redemption that we find in the Bible. At the same time, Genesis is often misunderstood with its fantastical portrayal of giants, divine decimation and covenants sealed in blood.

A clear look at it reveals a deep passion of a loving God and clear instructions on how we are to live in relationship with our Creator and God’s creation. That is why we are launching into a six week exploration of this influential book.

As a follow up to our August Bible Conference, we will begin a church- wide study of Dr. Ben Witherington’s study The Gospel of John. This 12-week in-depth study has a brief daily reading followed by class time with DVD lessons by the author. Witherington’s incisive insight and compelling observations will provide clarity on the powerful and practical ways of the Son of God. Classes will be available on Sunday mornings, Wednesdays at noon and in small groups at various days and times. The cost of your study guide is $7. By Tyler Vittetoe, High School Minister The summer has been full of amazing experiences! From Camp Lee, Costa Rica, SIFAT and the Middle School mission trip to Panama City, God has been faithful in giving our students opportunities to grow in their love for Jesus and for others.

I want to take the time to thank you for being a congregation that cares about the next generation of believers. Isn’t that what it’s all about in the end? Now as the new school year begins, Mike and I are expecting great things. One of the exciting things about the month of August is the transition that our students make from Children’s ministry into Middle School ministry and Middle School ministry into High School ministry. We have special events tailored to make these transitions more exciting for those students and give them a chance to connect some of their friends into our church family for the first time.

Our student ministry is also looking for more volunteers to get connected to our ministry. If you are looking for a fulfilling place to serve in our church, please get in contact with Tyler Vittetoe at [email protected]. Our goal is for our ministry to be a great place for students to come and know that they have the support of caring adults.

By Jon Seale, Elementary Minister Did someone say it’s almost time for school to start? Where did the summer go? What about all the lazy days of sleeping in, swimming all day and late dinners by the grill? Does this really have to end? I am sure these are just a few questions you will hear from your children before school starts.

Could you imagine your attitude if you had 12 weeks of vacation and then had to go back to work? It is trying and stressful for anyone but there are a few things you can do to help your children in this transition. You have to ease back into the school sleep schedule. You can not expect a child that has been staying up late and sleeping in to go to bed early on the first night and be 100% the next day. Instead of shifting the bed time first, start shifting the wake up time. Start waking your child at the time they will need to get up for school so they will tire earlier at night. It is easier to get a sleepy child to bed than an anxious one. Have fun with it too. For a few days before school starts, have everyone get up and get out and have some fun. Waking up is biological but getting up is a choice. By the start of school, their body (and yours) will be in the habit of getting up earlier.

As everyone resettles into the school routine, take some time to reflect and pray about how you can support your child more this school year.

“Our first church-wide theme after much discussion and prayer, was “A Venture in Love Toward a Vision.” The love of Christ and the expansion of His vision at Christ UMC has grown in ways we never imagined back then. I have life-long friends from Christ UMC and the connections we have in Christ are really indescribable. Those friends have been there for me both in good times and in bad. I hope and pray that we will endeavor to continue to grow, serve and worship together as a Christian community, and that we will seek to follow God’s plans for the next 37 years and beyond.” —Lea (Danny) Griffin missioner

9Looking Back—Moving FORWARD

“There’s no way I would have hung-out with these guys since 1993 (22 yrs.) if I didn’t like being around them a lot! Even tho 3/4s of our group is over 60 (I’m the baby in the group at only “57”) - I think we are still capable of making some decent music that still moves some people if we really try. I personally have come to especially enjoy our times together as a small men’s Bible study group, although Jeff is the only “small man” in the group! Even though I’m sure we are very close to not being a musical entity much longer—I don’t think we’ll quit meeting as a group until some of us just can’t physically make the meetings anymore. I don’t think we’ll ever stop being good friends until we check out of this world.” —Tommy

Being a Circuit Rider has been a lot of fun and a great opportunity for me to be with some

really good friends. For some reason I’ve always thought that serving and sacrifice were

not supposed to be fun so the past 21 years may not count. Jeff’s talent, spirit, reputation,

and contacts led me to places to which I would never have gone otherwise. It has been

a wonderful ride that I’ve been able to share with my family and the families of my Circuit

Rider brothers in Christ. —Steve

BRING IN THE GOODBy Rick Warren - For more information, visit danielplan.com We don’t count calories on The Daniel Plan, but focus on overall long-term health. When you consume lots of fresh vegetables and low-glycemic fruit, a moderate amount of lean protein, healthy whole grains and healthy fats, your palate will begin to change and you will be able to make better, satisfying food choices without the need to count every calorie. The Daniel Plan is rooted in a simple principle: Take the junk out and invite the abundance in.Here are the main concepts to incorporate into your diet now:n Eat from the rainbow of colors in the plant world.n Add whole grains in moderation. Buy them in their original form, such as oats, wheat berries and even popcorn.n Boost your fiber with whole grains, legumes (beans and peas) and vegetables.n Power up with protein in every meal.n Enjoy healthful fats. Fats from fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and extra virgin olive oil and coconut butter. These healthy fats help to reduce diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and make your food tasty and satisfying.

Your daily choices, with God’s limitless power, done with a community of friends, can help you launch each day with intention and purpose. As you bring in the good with your food choices, look for ways to bring in the good in your fitness as well. Are you enjoying exercise that you love with people who support you? Try something new this week. Think simple and fun.

CROSSROADS CONTRIBUTES TO MINISTRY THROUGH DEBT REDUCTIONRob Blackwell, Church AdministratorThe Crossroads building at the corner of Hillcrest and Grelot Road has sold! We closed on the sale to CVS on Monday, July 20. After years of doing valuable ministry work in our community, now the vacant building is contributing to ministry again by allowing us to take a huge bite out of our debt, which will soon free up funds for ministry that are currently used for interest payments. As we decided in the Church Conference last November, $2 million of the approximately $2.26 million net proceeds were paid on debt principal immediately after closing and the remainder will go toward much-needed building repairs and improvements. If you follow the thermometer chart each month, you will notice that our 2015 GOAL has now increased. That’s because, as we committed last year, the Crossroads proceeds are in addition to our 2015 goal of $1.15 million in principal payments from FORWARD. That’s still a very aggressive goal, so please keep your FORWARD giving coming so we can fund the ministries of Christ UMC and keep on schedule with the Seven Year Plan.

Brian Johnson says, “To begin with Stephen Ministry has given me a sense of self worth, significance and value to the Church. It has been a great process with great people. It has taught me the importance of letting God work in and through me to love and care for others in need.

The Stephen Ministry has given me the opportunity to embrace the name ‘Jesus’ with other friendly Christians. Being a part of a group of Christians who value me, teach me, challenge me and love me has been an amazing experience. Above all else, Stephen Ministry has helped me continue to discover my identity and purpose in the Body of Christ.”

Do Brian’s words resonate with you in a special way? Would you like to know more about Stephen Ministry or about becoming a Stephen Minister at Christ UMC? If so, please contact Donna Alexander at 251.342.0462. Your call is confidential.
