Reflections on Sunday

Readings:

First Reading: Exodus 24:3-8 Today’s passage from the book of Exodus describes the covenant be-tween God and the Israelite people. A covenant is a solemn agreement made between two parties and was usually sealed in blood. In ancient times, blood was considered the source of life. To sprinkle two people with the same blood bonded them as closely as if they were blood relatives.

Second Reading: Hebrews 9:11-

15 On Yom Kippur, the high priest sacrificed a goat on the altar in the temple. Then he took some of the blood into the holiest place in the temple sanctuary where only he was allowed to go. There, he sprinkled that blood as a renewal for the cove-nant made at Mt. Sinai, and prayed

that God would forgive the sins they had committed during the previous year. This ritual is the backdrop for

today’s reading from the letter to the

Hebrews.

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

Fr. Paulson has kindly yielded his space to me

today. I am speaking for myself and only for my-

self. Fr. Paulson has not seen this script before it

went for printing.

We are celebrating the feast of the Most Holy

Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). As

Roman Catholics, we believe that under the ap-

pearance of Bread and Wine, Jesus is really, truly, substantially pre-

sent. We celebrate this faith in the Eucharist, where we hear the Word

of God and receive Jesus in Holy Communion. It is this celebration,

this sharing in the Body and Blood of Christ that makes us one body,

one family of Christ the King. I have been a member of this family for

15 years, you have graciously accepted me. We may meet only casual-

ly before or after Mass, but I have felt your love and concern and I have been inspired by your faith and your commitment to regular Sun-

day mass. What a great privilege has been given to us, to receive to-

gether the Sacred Body and Blood of Christ, to be so intimately united

to our Lord and savior and through him with one another. For me, as a

priest, the greatest privilege granted to me is to be allowed to place the

Sacred Host in your hands.

However, I must be honest, even if I upset some one by being so.

There is one thing that disturbs me, that saddens me. At any given

Sunday Mass, 10, 20, 30, 40 or more will receive Holy Communion and will then, almost without breaking stride, walk straight out of the

church, still chewing on the Sacred Host, no thought of spending a few

quiet moments in Thanksgiving. Mass at Christ the King rarely lasts

more than an hour, more typically about 50 minutes. Could not the fi-

nal 5 to 7 minutes be given over to thanksgiving with the rest of the

community? What could possibly be so urgent, so immediate, so de-

manding of time every Sunday, that you (if you recognize yourself in

what I write) cannot give one complete hour to God, once a week. Is it

too much to ask that you stay with us until the final blessing and you

hear the greeting “Go in Peace.” Please, please, please on this feast of

the Body and Blood of Christ give some prayerful thought to this. Un-fortunately I am not with you today to celebrate with you. I am in Bos-

ton for the wedding of my niece and going on from there to Ireland for

the rest of June. See you in July.

United in Christ,

Brian Timoney

The Catholic bishops of the United States have called for a special national collection in our churches throughout the

country to assist in the humanitarian efforts in Nepal. Bish-

op George from North Eastern India will be preaching at all the masses this weekend to inform us about the region.

A shocked world is reaching out to aid the small Himalayan republic of Nepal devastated by a 7.8 earthquake. Because

of the extent of the destruction and the difficulties faced by

the rescuers, the death total is still incomplete but stands in excess of 4,600. Landslides and avalanches on Mount Ever-

est, Nepal’s most famous landmark, killed a number of

climbers and Sherpas, the native mountain guides. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has aid workers on the ground in the

disaster zone.

Of Nepal’s 30 million people, more than 80 percent are Hin-

du, with small numbers of Buddhists and Muslims and only

a 1.4 percent Christian population. But we do not help peo-ple because they are Catholic, we help them because we are

Catholic.

As the year comes to a close, I

would like to thank all our

teachers, faculty and leader-ship both at the Religious Ed-

ucation and School for your

hard work and ministry. Many of you are in Catholic educa-

tion and formation not for the

money, but for the joy that you experience in teaching our children about God, Church

and the faith that gives us strength. On behalf of our com-

munity, Thank you!

Fr. Paulson
