Dear Friends, As we celebrate Christmas, we are thankful for the gift of faith, a gift of 'good news' that opens up for us the beautiful message of this holy season, namely, that God loves us so much that he sent his only Son to redeem us and to show us the way to the Father in heaven. The best Christmas gift we can give each other is to share our faith with loved ones and strangers alike, proclaiming the joyous tidings that 'God is with us.' Our world, our coun-try and our homes are often witnesses to violence, preju-dice and fear. Christmas is a time for us to counter these ills by loving each other as deeply as God loved us by sending us his son. The clergy and staff of Christ the King wish peace and good will to all in our community, assuring you of our prayers and best wishes always. Pope Francis celebrated his 81st birthday last Sunday and shared a 4ft pizza with young people. Pope Francis said three simple attitudes could help prepare us to welcome Jesus Christ. “Saint Paul invites us to prepare for the coming of the Lord by assuming three attitudes: constant joy, persevering prayer and continual thanksgiving,” the Pope said. “Joy, prayer and gratitude are three attitudes that prepare us to live Christmas in an authentic way.” The community of CTK sent a gift of $10,000.00 to Puerto Rico, which was matched by a benefactor totaling to $ 20,000.00. Over 250 parishioners filled boxes of food for Monument Crisis Center in December. Our CTK school children sent many gifts to St. Boniface with the assistance of SFPD. There are over 650 children who are homeless in Mount Diablo School District and Sr. Maureen and her staff at Religious Education worked with our faith formation children and gathered food and gift cards to bring joy to these children. Our St. Vincent de Paul has brought cheer to so many. Our CYO basket-ball group sent $1500.00 to Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, devastated by the fire in Northern California. We sent 3 checks of $5500.00 each to Monu-ment Crisis Center, Shelter Inc. and the What if Founda-tion to support the poor in our neighborhood and abroad. Our sewing ministry has sewn and clothed over 9,000 children. These are some of the good acts of kindness rendered by CTK. We have reasons to be happy for turn-ing December into a season of giving. Fr. Paulson

An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Je-sus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” pre-dates clock time, and really has to do with a celebra-tion in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possi-ble for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s cele-bration: John the Evangelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the com-ing of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late!
