Year of Mercy Reflection

In today's Gospel, Jesus expresses His burning desire to accomplish His great mission, saying, "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!" His passion, death, and resurrection will spark the purifying flame of divine mercy, opening heaven to all believers by the forgiveness of sin.

Yet Jesus also predicts the division and opposition that will arise even among families, as one chooses to follow Him and another rejects His message. As in ancient times, when the prophet Jeremiah was threatened with death for speaking God's often unpopular word, many Christians today face opposition within their own fami-lies and communities, while the violent persecution of Christians increases worldwide.

In his prayer entrusting the world to Divine Mercy, St. John Paul II takes up the theme of fire, speaking of his own "burning desire that the message of God's merciful love may be made known to all the peoples of the earth" and referring to the Divine Mercy messages as "the spark which will prepare the world for [Jesus's] fi-nal coming" (Diary, 1732). He added, "This spark needs to be lighted by the grace of God. This fire of mercy needs to be passed on to the world. In the mercy of God the world will find peace and mankind will find hap-piness! I entrust this task to you... May you be witness-es to mercy!"

Are we willing to witness to God's merciful love despite the opposition we may face in our own families and from the world? Are we ready, as St. Paul says, to resist sin even to the point of shedding blood? By keeping the flame of God's merciful love burning even amid storms of opposition, we will enter into the eternal peace won for us by Jesus Christ.

Catechetical Sunday - September 10-11, 2016 “Prayer: The Faith Prayed"

This year, the Church will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed" as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. Those whom the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful op-portunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

To learn more about how catechists and teachers, as well as all the baptized, can grow in knowledge and faith, go to the USCCB website -- www.usccb.org and search “Catechetical Sunday.”

Blessings on those newly baptized: Payton June Edwards.

Our regular RCIA sessions will resume weekly on September 1 for the beginning of the new cycle. Questions? Call Deacon Ross Ronish

Carmelite Corner

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel p 44 (13/15)

The following is taken from the Message of St. John Paul II to the Carmelite Family on the occasion of the 750th Anniversary of the Brown Scapular, March 25, 2001.

“I too have worn the Scapular of Carmel over my heart for a long time! “…

Contemplation of the Virgin presents her to us as a loving Mother who: sees her Son growing up in Nazareth (Lk 2:40, 52)

follows him on the roads of Palestine,

helps him at the wedding at Cana (Jn 2:5)

at the foot of the Cross, becomes the Mother asso-ciated with his offering and given to all people when Jesus himself entrusts her to his beloved disciple (Jn 19:26)

As Mother of the Church, the Blessed Virgin is one with the disciples in “constant prayer” (Acts 1:14);

As the new Woman…she is taken up into heaven from where she spreads the protective mantle of her mercy over her children on their pilgrimage to the holy moun-tain of glory.

Spiritual Practices

Ignatian Spirituality

Our culture often tells us that reason and analysis are a sounder basis for action than feelings. Many people con-sider feelings to be deceptive and troublesome, or even evil. We often get advice to master feelings or ignore them (or both). Some people even say we are led away from God by emotion. As a result, many of us don’t at-tend to our feelings. Ignatius, on the other hand, dis-covered several practical ways to sort through and use our emotions. His discoveries proved so useful that the process of decision making (discernment) is still used over 500 years later.

The Spiritual Exercises will start a new session on September 10, in the Christ the King Youth Center Game Room. We invite you to join us. To register, email or call for an application or download one from our Facebook page at SEELTC or call Ellen at 628-8626. For Spanish call Cesar at 942-1050. Email [email protected].

Benedictine Spirituality: Our small group meets on the third Thursday of the month, this time Aug. 18, at noon in the Children’s Chapel. We read and reflect upon the Holy Rule and commentary, and conclude with liturgical prayer. We welcome you as Christ! For more information, contact Joyce at 375-1308.

Cursillo News

Leaders school is held in our Youth Center each third Saturday of the month, beginning at 9 a.m. and running no later than 11 a.m. In these sessions, Cursillistas, especially those who want to assist in the Rollo room, will learn about the updated Cursillo Manual and Pilgrims Guide, which have significant changes that will affect how Cursillo Weekends are to be conducted in the future. All Cursillistas, new and old (mature), need to become informed about the changes that will bring our Yakima Diocese Cursillo Movement in harmony with all the Cursillo movements worldwide.

Please pray about continuing or renewing your Cursillo ministry and attending the upcoming information sessions. De Colores!

Contact Carl Zeamer at 509-943-9991 or Judy Kitchen at 509-786-2785, if you have questions.
