Choir Practice on SundaysIn preparation for the April 14 Good Friday Tenebrae Service at Covenant First Presbyterian Church a choir practice will be conducted each Sunday afternoon at 4:30 PM through April 7th. We encourage those God has gifted with singing voices to join the choir for this very special service.

Athanasius Presbytery MeetingThe congregation gave unanimous approval to the elders to pursue the process of affiliation with Athanasius Presbytery of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches. The Lord’s Day Communion Service

March 5, 2017 11:00 a.m.

WE PREPARE FOR WORSHIP Prelude: arr. Anna Laura Page

“Amazing Grace” with “My Chains Are Gone” Meditations:

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted of Satan;

Make speed to help thy servants who are assaulted by manifold temptations; and, as Thou knowest their several infirmities, let each one find thee mighty to save;

Through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen. Adapted from the Collect for the First Sunday of Lent

from The Scottish Book of Common Prayer © 1929. p. 134.

+O God, who has made of one blood all the peoples of the earth,

and who sent Your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near;

Grant that people everywhere may seek after You and find You; Bring the nations into your fold; pour out Your Spirit upon all

flesh; and hasten the fullness of Your kingdom, through Jesus, Your Son and our Savor. Amen.

GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP * Call to Worship Isaiah 57:15; Psalm 80:18; 85:6 (NASB)

[Leader] For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. ”

Revive us, and we will call upon Your name…. Will Thou not revive us again, that Thy people may rejoice in Thee?

+The Lord’s Supper

The other New Covenant sacrament is the Lord’s Supper, in which by the giving and receiving of bread and wine (or grape juice if conscience dictates) according to Christ’s institution, Jesus’ death is declared. Covenant members are worthy to receive the Lord’s Supper and when in faith they receive Christ’s body given to them and His blood shed for them, they thereby feast upon Jesus Christ in covenant renewal and receive through this means of grace the benefits of union with Christ and spiritual nourishment unto our growth in grace. Amen.

GOD HEARS OUR CONFESSION AND RESTORES US Our Corporate Confession The Book of Common Worship

[In Unison] I confess to you that I am by nature sinful and unclean, and that I am most miserably helpless before my adversaries.

I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed; not only in outward transgressions,

But also in secret thoughts and desires that I am not able to understand, but which are all known to you.

For this reason, I flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your forgiveness and deliverance, through my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Promise of Forgiveness 1 John 1:7,9 (NASB)

[Leader] But if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

GOD HEARS OUR PRAYERS AND AFFIRMATIONS A Prayer in Psalm Psalm 32 (NASB)

[Leader] How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit!

[Congregation] When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah.

[Leader] I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah.

[Congregation] Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found; surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him. You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

10 3

Page 6: Christ Redeemer Presbyterian Church Christ Redeemer · and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive 10:30the

[Leader] I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding, whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, Otherwise they will not come near to you.

[Congregation] Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but he who trusts in the Lord, loving-kindness shall surround him.

[Unison] Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones; and shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart.

* The Affirmation of Faith The Nicene Creed Θ I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven

and earth, and of all things visible and invisible And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; Very God of Very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; And was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven; And is seated on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, The Lord and Giver of life; Who proceeds from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic (universal) and apostolic church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead; And the life of the world to come. Amen.

Θ The Nicene Creed is an ancient, historic creed setting forth the essential teachings of orthodox Christian belief. The creed was originally formulated at the Council of Nicea, 325 AD, then later refined at the Council of Constantinople, 481 AD.

IV. A Command for Continued Humility and Contriteness “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous…” (1 John 1:5-2:1)

Preaching of the Word of God Pastor Randy Wilding

A Season of Humility and Contriteness I. A Biblical Season of Humility and Contriteness

“When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.” (Nehemiah 1:4)

II. The Character of Continued Humility and Contriteness “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 4:3-4)

III. An Example for Continued Humility and Contriteness Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” Jesus said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean.” (John 13:8-10)

* Doxology Tune: LAST UNS ERFREUEN Let all things their Creator bless,

And worship Him in humbleness! Oh praise Him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,

And praise the Spirit Three in One, O praise Him, O praise Him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Prayers for the Church and the World

The Lord’s Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

GOD SPEAKS TO US Reading the Prophets Nehemiah 1:1-11 (NASB)

1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in Susa the capitol, 2 that Hanani, one of my brothers, and some men from Judah came; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped and had survived the captivity, and about Jerusalem. 3 They said to me, “The remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire.” 4 When I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5 I said, “I beseech You, O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who preserves the covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, 6 let Your ear now be attentive and Your eyes open to hear the prayer of Your servant which I am praying before You now, day and night, on behalf of the sons of Israel Your servants, confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; I and my father’s house have sinned.

8 5

Page 8: Christ Redeemer Presbyterian Church Christ Redeemer · and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive 10:30the

7 We have acted very corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. 8 Remember the word which You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful I will scatter you among the peoples; 9 but if you return to Me and keep My commandments and do them, though those of you who have been scattered were in the most remote part of the heavens, I will gather them from there and will bring them to the place where I have chosen to cause My name to dwell.’ 10 They are Your servants and Your people whom You redeemed by Your great power and by Your strong hand. 11 O Lord, I beseech You, may Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to revere Your name, and make Your servant successful today and grant him compassion before this man.” Now I was the cupbearer to the king.

* Readings the Gospel Matthew 5:1-11; John 13:1-17 (NASB)

Matthew 5:1-11 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain;

and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for

they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of

God. 10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of

righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you,

and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

John 13:1-17 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. 5 Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” 8 Peter said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
