Dear Friends in Christ,

On February 13th, the church season of Lent be-gins. Lent is the 40 non-Sunday days before Easter. It is the time of year that the church (traditionally) puts away the word “Alleluia.” The tone of worship becomes reflective as we fo-cus on the life of Jesus, and the price He paid for our salvation. Although the church calendar is repetitive, the chal-lenge for us every year is to not simply go through the motions. We need the words of God that we will ponder, and we certainly need the death and resurrection of Jesus to cover our lives. I recently overheard someone say, “I had never felt so unsupported and unappreciated as I did when I joined a church.” This is a sobering and humbling statement for me to hear. And yet it is so very true. There is sin, even in the church. Ashes will cover our heads

on Ash Wednesday, marking us those in need of God’s grace. However, Jesus Christ is risen from the dead! There is victory in the church! White banners and flowers will adorn our sanctuary on Easter Sun-

day, celebrating the victory that our Lord has won and given to us! May this time of year be a chance for you to reflect on your life and sinful actions which condemn you, as well as the life and actions of Christ which forgive you and set you free. I am looking

forward to worshipping with you, and watching Jesus transform us from sinners to saints all over again!

Yours in Christ,

CHRISTIAN GROWTH REPORT FROM THE COUNCIL MEETING (1-20-13)

● After receiving approval from Pastor and the teachers, there will be a change in the Sunday School format. For 3 Sundays the schedule will be as usual. On the 4th Sunday, all grades will meet together for a variety of Bible related music, crafts, and games. After music time, we will break into group for the crafts and games. ● The meals for Midweek School are still on the agenda and an area that needs help from any-one willing to spare 1 1/2 hours, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The meals are already planned and require very little cooking. Basically, you will just need to serve and clean up. Please see Candy Schoppa or Jackie Watkins to volunteer, and we “Thank you” in advance for helping. ● A “Kid’s & Youth” Service is in the planning stages for this Spring. It will be on May 12th, which is also Mother’s Day. ● The tentative dates for VBS are June 23rd-27th.

Thank you to all who have provided meals for the Lu-theran Student Center - Sup-per on Sunday. We are look-ing forward to the Spring se-mester. Along with that, we also want to get a head start on filling in the dates for SOS

dinners. Please let me know if you or your church group would like to sign up for one of these dates. E-mail me at [email protected] or you can call 806-786-3445. Thank you!

Health for Friends Clinic: December numbers were down due to the weather and holidays with 394 clients screened; a total for the year of 8,121. This is more than was seen last year. Things have been slow at all the outreach sites, most likely due to the weather. Majority of the people are seen at the places were food vouch-ers are distributed. The glucose strip program ended on December 1, but most on the program improved over the year. At present, no funds are available. Community Health Clinic of Lubbock (CHCL) is in a transitional period, so patient numbers are very low. For the year, first time patients that were screened at outreach sites was 759; and at the clinic was 222. Neighborhood House: This is our 45th year of service. For the year, there was 2,180 assisted with utilities for a total of $491,545. The changes made in qualifying for the elderly/disabled unit and household crisis funds made it more difficult to access the funds and it is anticipated that it will probably get worse. Many changes lowered the poverty level and the amount that could be distributed. At present, we are waiting to learn what funds will be available. We receive funds because we have a good reputation. The City of Lubbock generally comes to us with their grants/funds, because we believe and practice good stewardship. For the year, 181 prescriptions were helped with a total of $3,512; 1710 food vouchers, totaling $10,260; 264 hygiene bags totaling $1,320; 120 diapers totaling $210; and 156 kid pacs, totaling $780. During the year 3,971 households were assisted at a value of over $500,000.

NEEDS: Toilet tissue and toothpaste. Wedgewood South: December turned out to be a good and steady month for Wedgewood. There were 12 total inquiries/tours. Traffic was not so busy due to the holidays. We maintained 48 residents!! Our budget is 44 and we have 48 which is 4 above our monthly budget. We are currently working on a waiting list…. Hoping for a GREAT FULL HOUSE FOR 2013. Keep the re-ferrals coming.

Foster Care/Adoption: The census is currently 57 which is 10 over the budgeted census. We currently have 24 families and several still in the process. Things are going well. Spring Fling 2013: April 19, 2013 from 5:30– 8:30pm at the Frazier Alumni Building. Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door.
