The Hebrew word for the verb 'to anoint' is mashach whicj is the root of messiah, meaning “anointed one.”

God's anointing authorises them for leadership and empowers them with the Holy Spirit. (1 Sam. 16:13; Isa. 61:1).An "anointed one" or mashiach was an authorised and empowered leader.
