One of the important things we learned on our service trip to Guatemala a year ago January was that we probably got more out of going than we were able to provide to those we served. Still, the leader of Partners in Development who was our contact all through the trip reminded us that there was something indispensible about our presence among the poorest of the poor. Our being there reminded these folks living on a dollar a day that they were not forgotten by the world. Yes we were building stoves that were helpful in that they kept soot out of babies lungs by piping the exhaust out through the roof, burned cleaner and more completely. But that was not the key thing. It was just our being there that was most important. So often that is true in situations back home. Just our being there, being available, makes a greater difference than we realize. Sometimes we can’t change things. We can’t do much to alleviate loss or hardship. But we can be there, be present. While we often want God to do a lot more I believe this is God’s greatest gift as well. An active, loving Presence. -Dave

Church School News – Winter Greetings from your Church School! February is a short month, but we have a few special events planned. Attendance really fluctuates at this time of the year, but we still provide at least two fun and enriching activities to accompany the lectionary lesson each Sunday. (All lessons are prepared by the director in advance, unless YOU have an activity or lesson of your own you’d like to offer.) It is a great time to try volunteering if you have been meaning to, and your support is appreciated! See Nicole or Fr. Dave with questions, or go directly to our SignUp Genius link in the weekly Thursday Reminders. On February 5th, there will be a very special Scout Sunday Service. All grade school students will be in church that Sunday to support their friends in scouting. Both Boy and Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to wear their uniforms and participate in all aspects of the service (acolyting, reading, ushering, passing the peace, and recitation of their oaths and laws). This has become an annual event that is growing in popularity! (NOTE: Godly Play and the Nursery will meet as usual that day.) On February 12th there will be an important meeting of Friends of Church School to plan ahead for Lenten activities (Heifer Intn’l outreach & market) and our annual Easter Eggstravaganza. Please join us in the library during coffee hour. Amy Landis serve as substitute director on February 19th (Nicole will be out that day.) In the Godly Play classroom this month, Jan Galante will guide the preschoolers and kindergartners in wondering about The Great Pearl, Mother Theresa, The Sower, and The Mustard Seed. She would love to see more of her young friends in February! Be safe and warm this month! Nicole Nichols, Church School Director My contact is 860-928-2155, or by email: [email protected]

Adult: All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner. Allison Weiss has an adorable little girl, a successful husband, a career she loves, and a nice house in the suburbs. So why can’t she make it through the day without popping a few prescription pain pills? She can’t possibly be an addict, because she has nothing in common with the crackheads and junkies she sees on the city streets. Allison’s denial, however, almost kills her. The author paints a painful yet realistic portrait of what addiction looks like and how it can almost destroy a family, but offers a glimpse of redemption at the end. Young Adult: For young adults: Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Set right before the Revolutionary War, thirteen-year-old Isabel is a slave whose owner promises to free her and her sister, Ruth. After his death, however, Isabel becomes the property of a cruel couple, British Loyalists who have no plans to free them. After her new owners sell Ruth to a southern family, Isabel becomes a spy for the colonists in the hopes of winning her freedom and reuniting with her sister. The first book of a trilogy, Chains was the winner of the 2009 Scott O’Dell award for historical fiction and a 2008 National Book Award finalist. Children: Lemonade in Winter: A Book About Two Kids Counting Money by Emily Jenkins and G. Brian Karas. On a cold winter’s day, Pauline and her little brother John-John decide to have a lemonade stand. Pauline gathers her quarters to but supplies to make lemonade, limeade, and lemon-limeade. Due to the weather they don’t make much money but are happy to have enough to buy two popsicles. This book is a great introduction to young children who are learning about counting money. Be sure to check out the last page, where Pauline describes the value of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to her little brother. Ages 4-8. Just a reminder, leave your old DVDs and books for others in the Christ Church DVD and Book Swap.
