    RECTORS REFLECTIONS

    ear Friends in Christ,

On February 10, Ash Wednesday, we begin our Lenten

journey with Christians all around the world. Our theme at

Christ Church this year is Living Lent As People of the Resurrection.

My hope is that this theme will remind us that Lent is not an end in

itself, but a time to focus on the larger picture. We are Easter

People. A friend of mine often spoke of Lent as being similar to

baseballs spring training. It is a time to get back to basics, to

prepare for the regular season. Similarly, Lent is a time for us to

return to the basics of our faith, basic spiritual disciplines, to

remember that regular life is a life empowered by the JesusResurrection.

We will begin with our liturgy on Ash Wednesday a day to reflect

and repent. As we are reminded of our mortality, we are

encouraged to focus our attention and energy on those things that really matter in life. To help us do

that we will offer a study with Ray Vanderlaan each Sunday at 9:00. Those of you who have seen

any of his video series know that they are excellent. The same will be true this year as we join him for

The Path to the Cross. Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM we will take time to ponder, reflect on our

purpose in life and what it means to be Gods people, and to proclaim Gods Love and praise God

for His goodness even in the midst of pain. Study booklets for this series will be distributed to all whosign up for the study.

During Holy Week this year, I suggest we try something a bit different. In place of our usual Maundy

Thursday liturgy, Id like to invite you to join me for a Seder a meal similar to the one Jesus and his

disciples participated in as their last meal together. I will provide the symbolic foods and other

materials. However, we will need volunteers to provide some of the other foods. Recipes and

shopping lists will be available in church, along with a sign-up list for those who would like to prepare

an appropriate dish for Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday, I would like to propose that we offer the

Living Stations of the Cross, much like we did a few years ago. Those of you who were there may

recall that volunteers acted out each station as we sang a verse to a hymn. After the singing

members of the congregation took turns offering a brief personal meditation based on one of thestations. Again, we will need a different set of volunteers for Good Friday. This service can allow us an

opportunity to truly walk with Jesus to the Cross as we prepare to embrace anew our life as People

    of the Resurrection.

I invite you to enter fully into one or more of our Lenten activities this year

A Special Series of Services for the

    Season of Lent

oin us for Living Lent, a special series of services for the season of Lent.

Each service in this series focuses on a word to consider while living Lent

as Easter people. The Ash Wednesday service in the series is based on

the word PONDER and reminds us that Lent is a time to ponder our

relationship with God and with one another and to discover the love of God

seen in the cross and empty tomb. The service includes an Imposition of

Ashes, readings from Scripture, a childrens sermon, a sermon and hymns

that help us to remember that we are people of the resurrection living in

    Lent.
