Rector’s Reflections Dear Friends in Christ,

This summer let’s journey together. In partnership with the American Bible Society, we have made an

addition to our web site that we hope will help us all grow spiritually.

The American Bible Society is committed to serving the Church and encouraging people to read the

Bible. In an effort to increase daily Bible readership they created their “Journeys” site to provide daily

themed Scripture Journeys, available for anyone to subscribe. They have also made it possible for us to

create our own “journeys” for members and friends of Christ Church. You can subscribe by going to our

parish web site (www.christchurchduanesburg.org,) You will then receive daily emails that contain a

passage from Scripture, along with related video clips and brief comments. Our first journey is seven

days long and focuses on psalms we will hear during the liturgy during the summer.

If you want to explore other journeys, join the American Bible Society's community! They are creating

and adding journeys that help you engage with the Bible on a daily basis. Their passion is to see you

grow closer with the Lord and make Bible reading a habit.

I invite you to check it out, head over to American Bible Society's Community (http://american-bible-

society.journeymaker.org/) to explore the many different themes they've created. Each themed Journey

allows you to receive daily scripture and commentary through email or text. The themes include love,

forgiveness, peace, job loss, justice, poverty, and many others.

This is both an individual and a corporate journey. I pray that it will enrich our summer.

Yours in Christ,

Bill+

“Buckle Up”

By: Deacon Debbie

Recently while waiting to make a turn I noticed a father and his two young daughters on bikes. They

were carefully riding in tandem and following all the traffic laws but with one very important exception;

none of them were wearing bike helmets!

A nursing friend of mine told me a story of a boy she knew who was riding his bike along the side of the

road while his father jogged. Although he was riding his bike safely, he lost his balance and fell over

striking the side of his head on the curb. He was not wearing a helmet and experienced a traumatic

brain injury. He went from an honor roll student who also excelled in sports to a child with a learning

disability and poor coordination.

According to the Center of Disease Control website, while only 1% of all trips taken in the U.S. are by

bicycle, bicyclists face a higher risk of crash-related injury and deaths than occupants of motor vehicles

do. In 2010 in the U.S., almost 800 bicyclists were killed and there were an estimated 515,000

emergency department visits due to bicycle-related injuries.

The major risk factors are:

• Adolescents (15-24 years) and adults aged 45 years and older have the highest

bicycle death rates.

• Children (5-14 years), adolescents, and young adults (15-24 years) have

the highest rates of nonfatal bicycle-related injuries, accounting for

almost 60% of all bicycle-related injuries seen in U.S. emergency

departments.

• Males are much more likely to be killed or injured on bicycles than are

females.

• Most bicyclist deaths occur in urban areas and at non-intersection locations.

Interventions which have been found to reduce injuries and fatalities are:

• Bicycle helmets: Bicycle helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. All

bicyclists, regardless of age, can help protect themselves by wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets every

time they ride.

• Bicycle helmet laws for children: These laws are effective for increasing helmet use and reducing crash-

related injuries and deaths among children.

Interventions that have shown promise for reducing injuries and fatalities to bicyclists include the

following:

• Active lighting and rider visibility:

Fluorescent clothing can make bicyclists visible from further away than regular clothing

during the daytime.

Retro-reflective clothing can make bicyclists more visible at night.

Active lighting can include front white lights, rear red lights, or other lighting on the

bicycle or bicyclist. This lighting may improve the visibility of bicyclists.

So please buckle up your child’s and your bike helmet before you go for a bike ride this summer!

THE AGING OF LOVE.

I have always maintained that I wanted to grow old gracefully. I have read several articles on the

process of growing older. We are never too young to watch our weight, the intake of excessive fatty

foods, cholesterol and sugar/sweets.

Tips for healthier eating

• Switch to nonfat or 1% dairy products

• Bake or broil, instead of frying

• Use olive or canola oil, or use cooking spray

• Use lean cuts of meats and poultry and remove any skin or excess fat

• Stir-fry vegetables in broth instead of oil, or steam vegetables

• Eat fish once a week

Obesity is the prime risk for heart attack or stroke. Medications are helpful for those with health

problems and walking is the all-time favorite exercise. Also helpful is bike riding and swimming, both

now in season in this northern hemisphere. Exercise is good and can raise levels of HDL (good

cholesterol) and reduce waxy substance in the arteries. Exercise is also mandatory for all since

sedentary life style tends to add pounds to the body. Long sittings at a computer and/or television need

to be broken by vigorous exercise.

One of the articles I read was titled: “Successful Aging”. It highlighted the definition of successful

aging as the ability to maintain certain behaviors or characteristics. Some of these are:

• Low risk of disease and diseases-related disability;

• High mental and physical function;

• An active engagement with life.

Keys to successful aging include disciplines of avoidance of smoking of any kind; consistent exercise;

maintaining a nutritious diet (for caloric and vitamin consumption); and moderate (for some) to no (for

others) consumption of alcohol. These disciplines will aid to successful aging far more than

heredity. Thus, with successful aging, we may look forward to Growing Old with Good Health, Strength

and Vitality.

Humans were not meant to and should not lead solitary lives. Remember...to Get up and out...

Volunteer...Be interested...and Stay motivated. In order to age successfully we need to continually

discover and rediscover relationships, as well as activities that provide closeness and

meaningfulness. We all need to know we are cared for.

I have been fortunate, in that I no longer live alone. My daughter Dianne and her husband Adam,

have continually asked me to move in with them. When I came up for Thanksgiving, they went to

Coxsackie and moved my things up here, and I have been here ever since. This is certainly a wonderful

relationship. When I transferred to Christ Church, Duanesburg, that has also been a wonderful

relationship. It is so great to meet new people and find new activities which bring that closeness and

meaningfulness. In all relationships we not only get, but must also give. Simply put, successful aging is

tied to living out our love of God, our love of family and our love of neighbors. I guess we are all aware

Page 4: Christ Church Duanesburg Messenger July/Aug 2014

what it is to need love; and we all know the experience of being loved. What we need is to give

love. Love....the one thing Jesus asks of us.

May you all be blessed with God's Love.

You are all always in my prayers.

In His Love,

Doris J. Weiler

BELIEF

“I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD” we say as we begin the Nicene Creed (written in Nicea in AD 325). Do we

really mean what we say or are we reciting by rote? Who does the Bible say God is? To quote a

few: God created the heaven and earth and all that dwells therein; God is merciful and gracious; God is

truth; God is great; God is holy; God is greatly to be feared; God is our salvation; God of heaven; a

jealous God; a God of glory; a mighty God; a God of knowledge, Truly God is Omnipotent (All-Mighty,

All-Powerful, Unlimited Authority); Omnipresent (All-Present, Present in all places at all times); and

Omniscient (All-Knowing, Complete knowledge, Awareness, Understanding).

“I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,” we go on to say. Again we need to think about what we’re

saying. To truly believe in Jesus Christ, we must take on responsibility as Christians. Thus, as Christians,

we are responsible for our own actions as well as our outward consideration and respect for others—if

they also be Christians or not. Non-Christians will never know about Jesus Christ unless we behave with

kindness, grace and forgiveness. A hard heart will never win a soul for Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “A new

commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one

another.” (John 13:34)

Finally we say “And I believe in the Holy Spirit”. The Holy Spirit is mentioned 7 times in Matthew, 6

times in Mark, 13 times in Luke, 4 times in John and 36 times in the Acts of the Apostles.

Of the most profound are:

Mary was found with the child of the Holy Spirit.

St. John baptized with water but predicted He that would baptize with the Holy Spirit. After Jesus’

death and resurrection, He spoke to the disciples in Galilee saying “Go ye therefore and teach all

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. Our clergy of

today are still doing Jesus’ command, baptizing as such, all these years later.

In closing I quote 2 Corinthians 13:14 “The grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ, and the love of God

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen”

You are all always in my prayers.

Love and Blessings,

Doris J. Weiler

HELP CREATE A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR CHRIST CHURCH – A video to publicize our

church and its members to the community is in the planning stages. We’re currently looking for photos

depicting past events, both religious services and informal gatherings, which together will create a rich

picture of the life of our church. If you have some you are willing to lend, please place them in an

envelope clearly marked with your name, and give to either Doug Fortman or Jane Weyers. We’ll do

our best to treat these with care and ensure their return, but please don’t lend any that you cannot

bear to lose.

Later this summer, we’ll share more details and invite your thoughts. Hopefully some of you will even

agree to be videotaped! Thanks to Malcolm for encouraging us to undertake this challenge, and

volunteering his expertise.
