These days, i t is becoming more common to say ?Happy Hol idays? instead of ?Merry Christmas?. There are fewer Christmas cards and more hol iday cards. Christmas part ies are replaced by hol iday part ies. Saying ?Happy Hol idays? is encouraged in order to respect the di fferent rel igious or non-rel igious sensibi l i t ies of others. It is a good thing to respect the varying rel igious views of others. It is also important that we declare and are fai thful to what we bel ieve as Christ ians.
Whether i t is ?Happy Hol idays?, ?Merry Christmas? or some other greeting, i t is important to know the meaning of whatever we are saying. For us ?Merry Christmas? folks, what does our greeting mean? ?Merry Christmas? means being merry because God became one of us. Be merry because God?s Son destroyed the power of sin and death so our sins do not have to get the best of us. Be merry because l i fe wins out over death. Be merry because al l of this means a new world is possible through the power of God in Jesus and those who bel ieve in Him.
?Merry Christmas? is a greeting. It is also a commitment. It is a commitment to making merry in the name of Jesus what is not merry in our l ives and world. ?Merry Christmas? reminds us that our fai th is part icipatory. We do not say, ?Merry Christmas? and then off we go hoping the greeting comes true. In saying ?Merry Christmas?, we not only hope somebody?s Christmas is merry, we are to actual ly help i t to be merry. Saying ?Merry Christmas? in this world wi th so much violence, abuse, poverty, hunger, ridicule and blame, means we are wi l l ing to do something to counter or el iminate these painful real i t ies. ?Merry Christmas? means we are ready to look at the places in our own l ives where there is hurt, division, damage, confl ict or prejudice and see what we can do to heal them.
It is nice to have happy hol idays. It is even better to have new l ives and a new world because our ?Merry Christmas? greeting is matched wi th our commitment to do our part in making Christmas merry.

CATHOLIC NEWS / ANNOUNCEMENTSFAITH FORMATION ?Mary: A Bibl ical Walk wi th the Blessed Mother? is an adult fai th formation opportuni ty that includes prayer, video presentations, and small group sharing. Through videos, part icipants wi l l visi t the most signi ficant places in Mary?s l i fe and draw closer to Christ as they deepen thei r devotion to Mary. Sessions are held on Wednesdays, January 9 and 16 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. in 4D of the Pastoral Center. The cost is $30 which includes a workbook and refreshments. Join LA?s Wal k f or Lif e!Join Archbishop Gomez and tens of thousands in downtown Los Angeles for the fi fth annual OneLi fe LA, an event celebrating the beauty and digni ty of every human l i fe from conception to natural death. On Saturday, January 19, 2019 beginning at 12:00 noon at La Placi ta/Olvera St., we wi l l walk to LA Historic Park for a fami ly-friendly day of inspi ring speakers, l ive music, entertainment, food trucks, and exhibi ts from communi ty organizations serving those in need. The Requiem Mass for the Unborn at the Cathedral wi l l fol low at 5:00 pm. We do not yet have enough parishioners to fi l l a bus for the walk. En estos días, se dice "Fel ices Fiestas" en lugar de "Fel iz Navidad". Las tarjetas de
Navidad dan paso a las tarjetas de los días festivos. Las fiestas Navideñas son
susti tuidas por fiestas de los días festivos. "Fel ices Fiestas" se dice por respeto a
las di ferentes rel igiones, o por la sensibi l idad de los que no t ienen rel igión. Es lo
correcto respetar las diversas opiniones rel igiosas de los demás. También es
importante que declaremos y seamos fieles a lo que creemos como crist ianos.
Ya sea "Fel ices Fiestas", "Fel iz Navidad" o algún otro saludo, es importante saber el
signi ficado de lo que estamos diciendo. Para nosotros deci r "Fel iz Navidad" a la gente, ¿qué signi ficado t iene
nuestro saludo? "Fel iz Navidad" signi fica ser fel iz, porque Dios se hizo uno de nosotros. Ser fel iz porque el
hi jo de Dios destruyó el poder del pecado y la muerte para que nuestros pecados no tengan que sacar lo mejor
de nosotros. Ser fel iz porque la vida vence sobre la muerte. Ser fel iz porque todo esto signi fica que un
mundo nuevo es posible a través del poder de Dios en Jesús y quienes creen en él.
"Fel iz Navidad" es un saludo. También es un compromiso. Es un compromiso para hacer fel iz en el nombre
de Jesús lo que no es fel icidad en nuestras vidas y el mundo. "Fel iz Navidad" nos recuerda que nuestra fe es
part icipativa. Nosotros no decimos, "Fel iz Navidad" y luego nos vamos esperando que el saludo se haga
real idad. Al deci r "Fel iz Navidad", no sólo esperamos que alguien sea fel iz en Navidad, realmente le
ayudamos a ser fel iz. Deci r "Fel iz Navidad" en este mundo con tanta violencia, abuso, pobreza, hambre,
ridiculez y culpabi l idad, signi fica que estamos dispuestos a hacer algo para contrarrestar o el iminar estas
dolorosas real idades. "Fel iz Navidad" signi fica que estamos dispuestos a buscar en los lugares en nuestras
propias vidas donde hay dolor, división, daño, confl icto o perjuicio y ver qué podemos hacer para sanarlos.
Es boni to tener fel ices fiestas. Es aún mejor tener vidas nuevas y un mundo nuevo a
través de nuestro saludo de "Fel iz Navidad" que corresponde con nuestro compromiso
de hacer nuestra parte en hacer una fel iz Navidad.
