CONTENTS
This project was about the re-branding of a local restaurant. It entailed developing
a logo and graphic identity for the establishment. The project began with a r
esearch phase and proceeded through concept development and visual design.
At the end, there was visual alterations made to the restaurant along with a
cohesive packaging and brand identity.
The goal of this project was to re-brand Blondie’s Pizza; a popular spot for
tourists and locals alike. Blondie’s has been a successful pizzeria since the 1990’s
and have multiple locations throughout the Bay Area, most notably Powell St.
(the focus of this re-brand) and Berkeley. Although they’ve satisfied over two
decades of customers, where their Achilles’s heel lies is in their design branding.
Through this project I looked to create a positive brand identity that would
stay true to the values of Blondie’s and looked to promote an image that would
continue to provide fun and excitement to both new and familiar customers.

BLONDIE’S
SOLUTION:

The most critical upgrade that
Blondie’s needed was a more eye-
catching logo. Their shop is located
in one of the busiest areas of San
Francisco, so something bright, fun,
and easy to read was needed.
The logo worked because it incor-
porated both a pizza and a peace
sign. The peace sign was a small nod
to Blondie’s original tagline:
Make Pizza Not War.

MAIN VERSION
ALTERNATES
Branding
9
These are some of the in-store
products that are needed for the day-
to-day operations. Pizza boxes are an
essential part of the brand, each box
will have the alternate logo on the top
and have the side’s utilize the
primary logo, keeping a simple yet
unique design that separates it from
the competition. Each drink cup will
feature the main logo across the top
and alternate pizza logos dancing
across the bottom. The napkins are
also branded with the Blondie’s logo
in the bottom righthand corner.
Blondie’s
Attire
1010
These are the t-shirts that employees
wear on the job. For Blondie’s it was
important to stray away from the
typical pizza aprons and instead have
their outfits be a bit more hip and
comfortable. Having multiple color
t-shirts was intentional as it allows the
employees to express their own style
through the colors they wear. These
t-shirts are also offered for sale to
customers to build brand loyalty.
Chris Hurtt
Stationary
11
As a fast-paced business its important
for Blondie’s to have written
communication for both internal and
external customers. This letterhead
would be the official document from
management to employees and for
communication with affiliates and
partners of the brand.
The business cards are a simple and
fun spin on traditional cards as it
utilizes the brand colors along with
listing both locations in an easy-to-
read fashion.
Blondie’s
Store Exterior
Chris Hurtt1212
The store exterior is based off a
simple idea that less is more. The
windows were previously cluttered
with advertisements that those passing
by really didn’t know where to look.
Instead, customers will now be invited
in by the name and slogan featured
in their signature colors that stand out
for the area.
Store Interior
The interior carries that simplified
design throughout the store and
encompasses a menu system that is
much easier on the eyes. This allows
customers to peek in at the pizzas
avaiable on the counter, make quicker
decisions, and not be confused by the
lack of focal points within the design.
13Blondie’s
This project was for two clients of mine who are photographers and were building an
identity for their community activism. They came to me with the name Invisible
Hands and an objective for the design to be used as branding for their website,
clothing, stationary, etc.
The final product for Invisible Hands was a combination of a few concepts
relating to their line of work; bottomline being global outreach. To keep the
design clean and welcoming a sans serif font was used and the only colors were
black and white. This logo has gone on to become a successful part of the
Invisible Hands branding.

INVISIBLE HANDS

SOFTWARE USED:
Logo Exploration
Chris Hurtt16
These were some concept directions
based off the idea of having a circle
and some form of hands involved. I
wanted to explore everything from
real looking hands to ones more
abstracted. Colors were also being
experimented with here.
16
Color Study
Invisible Hands
Although the end logo was
decided on black & white, a substan-
cial amount of effort was put into
exploration of color. Here are some
of those mockups
17
Branding
Chris Hurtt18
The final logo that was decided
upon was a black and white version
that incorporated slighty character-
ized hands with rays of light shining
up based around a globe. This was
meant to suggest the global outreach
that this brand would have and the
simplicity in their mission. Font used
was Trade Gothic Condensed.
Since their brand represented
community involvement and global
outreach, it was important to exemplify
it in both a casual and active role in
society, as seen through the photos
in this spread.
Using a popular movie or TV show create a medium that encourages more
content and more intrigue. The deliverables will be a website and app that will
excite the viewer, to pump them up for a new season or a re-release of the film
and serve as a general home base for information. Outside of the basic website
needs like a home page, contacts and casting, create an entire section devoted
to media - photos, clips, trailers, etc.
Using Breaking Bad as the subject of choice, the website and iOS app would
create an experience based around quizzes and engaging show content.
This would be in the form of a periodic table, paying tribute to the chemistry
based show. Users are encouraged to use both the website and the app as each
media reveals different exclusive content.

These are the wireframes that path
out how the interation on the site
would potentially play out. The home
page allows for drop down menus to
narrow down season, character, and
type of media (i.e. Season 1, Walt,
Quiz). Also, as a user hover’s over an
option it is highlighted so that they
know what they may be picking.
The flow is simple and easy to allow
users to focus on the content more
than the navigation.

The final homepage features colors
inspired by Breaking Bad randomly
placed throughout a periodic table.
As a user hovers over a box, the opacity
for the rest of the table is reduced so
that it provides an easy focus area.
When a drop down box is clicked and
an option is chosen, it automatically
lowers the opacity for the rest of the
table as well. This prevents spoilers
for people who haven’t seen a certain
season yet.

Breaking Bad 25
Walt shakenly stands in the middle of the dessert holding a pistol to the sirens that he hears quickly approaching.
1 of 4Breaking Bad Season One Episode One: PilotA man wearing nothing but tightie whities and a gas mask careens his Winnebago down a desolate highway in the New Mexico desert. In the passenger seat, another man-either passed out or passed beyond-also wears a gas mask, his head on the dashboard. Two bodies, even more likely dead, slide across the RV floor until the vehicle veers into a ditch. The hyperventilating driver, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), climbs out, dons the shirt still hanging off the side view mirror (his pants are long since gone), then re-enters the van to retrieve a video camera, his wallet, and a gun. He records a cryptic, handheld farewell to his wife and son. “I just want you to know that no matter how it may look, I only had you in my heart.” That said, he faces the oncoming sirens, gun in hand.
Flashback to his birthday three weeks earlier. At dusk, Walt exercises on a mini-stairmaster in front of a plaque commemorating his contri-butions to some Nobel Prize worthy research. At breakfast, his hap-pily henpecking wife Skyler (Anna Gunn) hands him a plate of eggs topped by veggie bacon spelling “50” before bantering with their handicapped son (RJ Mitte). Afterwards, Walt drops off Junior at the same local high school where he works as an ineffectual chemistry teacher.
Later that day, one of Walt’s more disrespectful students witnesses him moonlighting at a car wash for additional income. The encoun-ter is especially belittling since the student laughingly photographs

This infographic explores the ongoing
debate of who the greatest basketball
player of all time is: Michael Jordan,
Kobe Bryant, or LeBron James.
Through an easy to read booklet, the
statistics of their first 10 years in the
NBA are compared as a fair analysis
(since they each have played a varying
amount of seasons).
Trophies they earned during that time
are signified by their color while the
outlined awards represent ones that
were earned later in their careers.

skip around and focus in on the information they feel is rele vant to
their interest in the pla yers.
Although the data will be accurate in its reporting, there
are a few challenges that are present when comparing these play-
ers. The biggest challenge that I will face with this project is the
fact that each of the pla y
basketball. Michael Jordan began his NBA career in 1984, Kobe in
1996, and LeBron in 2003. They are each almost a decade apart
in their arri val into the league and only one of them has complet-
ed his caree r. Technicall y, Michael Jordan is the only one whose
stats are complete since he is no longer playing, Kobe and LeBron
are still competing at a high le vel of performance that their stats
are continuously changing as the seasons progress. Also being
point in their career to compare. Looking at the stats overall--Jor-
Kobe in his 18th
season, and LeBron now in his 11th-- would pose some extremely
ed data. The number of seasons completed bet ween the
vels. Injuries and time of entry into the
professional league are also factors. Michael Jordan was out most
of his second season due to a broken foot, meanwhile Kobe has
er pla yed fe wer than 65 games per season through most of his
career, and LeBron has ne ver missed more than se ven games in
.
With that information, my decision to analyze the data
is going to be primarily based on where LeBron is now at in the
both Jordan and Kobe. I can also extend the data up to Kobe and
Jordan’s 15th seasons to show the path in which the t wo grew
and what LeBron may ha ve to accomplish to reach that le vel.
For my research I will be primarily taking my data from
the National Basketball Association. I also plan on taking cues
from a few other indirect sites to get some ideas of what people
may be interested in seeing compared bet ween the athletes. I
ven take information from polls of popular opinion of these
ers and compare them to the actual numbers as a way to
see if any biases exist bet ween the pla yers. I know starting out
already that most fans l ove Jordan, many people dislike LeBron,
and people seem to be split on opinions about Kobe. But one thing
is certain, no one can deny their individual greatness, this is what I
ant my research and infographic to highlight.

For an yone who’s e ven remotely a fan of basketball, three names
have been thrown around as being the greatest pla yers to e ver
step foot on the court; Michael Jordan, Kobe Br yant and LeBron
James. These individuals ha ve surpassed the a verage NBA pla yer
almost all across the boards. But the contr oversial battle continues
year in and year out, who is truly the best? My infographic will
explore the statistics of what these pla yers ha ve accomplished,
lay it out with a clean design, and ha ve readers be able to assess
the data in an easy to read fashion.
For my infographic I plan on doing an overview be-
tween the great pla yers LeBron James, Kobe Br yant, and Michael
Jordan because it has been a topic that interests me as a sports
fan. I’ ve watched all three pla yers compete with the league at
an amazing le vel of skill that makes you wonder just how they
do it without any sort of hesitation. Although this research won’t
cover the why behind their incredible talent, it will c over the what
according to numbers recorded by the NBA.
One really interesting topic to c over would be Pla yer Ef-
ws, three-pointers, assists, rebounds,
blocks and steals, along with missed shots, turn overs and person-
al fouls. The stats for this doesn’t c over defensi ve ability exten-
sively, but with each of the pla yers having a high le vel of defensi ve
abilit y, it would treat that as a constant while focusing on other
aspects of the game.
PER is just one statistic that can be useful in my info-
graphic anal ysis. The good ne ws about c overing these three play-
ers is that there’s plenty of accessible stats a vailable which will
make it easy to generate various comparisons along with identify
trends within the data that would highlight their abilities. With
these pla yers it will be interesting to compare Average Points Per
Game (PPG), Games Pla yed, MVP titles, Championships won.

THE SAINTS DATS WHOAn analysis of the New Orlean Saints victory in the 2010 Super Bowl
On Sunday, with a quarterback who had hitched his career to resurrecting the Saints and with a team that played nearly awlessly, the Saints gave New Orleans a reason to do what it does better than any other American city: celebrate. In the franchise’s rst Super Bowl, the Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, sending New Orleanians into the streets for a party.
Saints QB Drew Brees completed 32 of his 39 passes for 288 yards with two TDs. His 32 completions are tied for the most in Super Bowl history.

State and federal prisoners housed in private facilities as of December 2010
Facilities owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America, the country’s largest private prison company based on number of facilities
total revenue recorded by CCA in 2011
65 percent of the private prison contracts ITPI received and analyzed included occupancy guarantees in the form of quotas or required payments for empty prison cells (a “low-crime tax”). These quotas and low-crime taxes put taxpayers on the hook for guaranteeing profits for private prison corporations.
Occupancy guarantee clauses in private prison contracts range between 80% and 100%, with 90% as the most frequent occupancy guarantee requirement.
At least 37 states have legalized the contracting of prison labor by private corporations that mount their operations inside state prisons.(IBM, Microsoft, AT&T, Macy’s, and Target to name a few)
The highest-paying private prison is CCA in Tennessee, where prisoners receive 50 cents per hour.
Private prisons are the biggest business in the prison industry complex. About 18 corporations guard 10,000 prisoners in 27 states. The two largest are Correctional Corporation of America (CCA) and Wackenhut, which together control 75%. Private prisons receive a guaranteed amount of money for each prisoner, independent of what it costs to maintain each one.

This informational booklet explores
the topic of what goes on behind the
scenes of the country with the highest
prison population in the world.
The booklet is set to be made from
one sheet of paper that can be folded
so that the information may easily
be passed out at rallys, information
desks, and to prison inmates/families
that want to have a better under-
standing of the privatization
of prisons.
The flow of the booklet goes from
more general information about
American prisons to specific
information of how much money
privatized prisons generate.

To develop an Inclusive Environmental Graphic Signage & Wayfinding System
for the re-designed San Francisco State University, J. Paul Leonard Library. The
objective will be to design user-environmentally friendly informational signage
system that is accessible to a wide range of users, particulalrly persons with
disabilies in accordance to the ADA (American Disabilities Act) requirements and
Universal Design principles. The task will be to create a sequence of signs that
will guide and navigate the user from the outer periphery of the campus to the
Campus Library Events Room, LIB 121.

Chris Hurtt48
Water and fluid, abstract designs were
the main inspirations for the signage
system. Blobjects also played a role
during the conceptual phase as the
shapes incorporated fluidity.
Steering away from the traditional
static designs, the driver was to create
an interactive way for the users to not
only see the sign as a traditional sign,
but also utilize it’s unique style and
patterns to subtly point them in the
right direction. It was also important
for these signs to have an illumination
to them so that they may be used at
all times of the day.
In-World Sketches
Library Wayfinding 49
By incorporating abstract, fluid-like
designs, the signage created a
directional structure that would lead
viewers in certain directions prior to
even implementing text. The color
scheme of bold white text on different
shades of blue created a contrast
even viewers with loss of vision or
color blindness were able to identify.
The signage would be designed
with PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) as it
reduces glare and doubles as durable,
weatherproof plastic. Utilizing the
PVC material increases the chances of
outlasting other plastic based posters
that yellow and corrode from natural
time and weather.

Lined up next is a series of drawings I’ve done for myself and clients throughout
the past year. Having had a background in art, starting back in middle school,
this part of the portfolio can be considered my most ongoing project to date. It
features both people I’ve met and those that inspire me, along with small bits of
hand lettering work.
