Chris’ Column

President’s message

We are getting into what seems to be our busy season of great activities. This past month we had a great turnout at the Jurenka’s home in Long Beach for our Oktoberfest celebration. A big thank you is deserved by the Jurenka’s for putting together such a fantastic evening along with hosting all of us in their gorgeous home.

The Board has discussed throughout the year the

possibility of having an “all-hands” club meeting each

month as it will provide an opportunity for members to

socialize, share stories, and to help aid with those

restoring or working on their cars. We thought it

important to have a consistent location and time so

going forward be sure to mark the 3rd

Sunday of each

month at 3PM to be reserved for our club meetings at

AutoNation Ford in Tustin (Located off Tustin Ranch

Road and I-5). When Ed Zaleski headed into the

dealership they said they were looking for a club like

us to come along that they could help. Our Baby

Birds parked out front will be quite the draw to those

passing by and will draw them into the dealership.

Our first meeting is on Sunday, November 16th at

3PM. I hope to see you all there!

Also, this month we have a great tour that Ed put

together along with Ron Hitter to visit the Lew Webb

collection in Aliso Viejo. The tour will be on Saturday,

November 15th and this will be your only chance to

see this collection as it is not open to the public. We

will be bringing in a catered lunch and you can find

more details about this event later in the newsletter. If

you like rare vintage American cars, this is the place

for you!

Lastly, as I am wrapping up my tenure as your President I want to let you all know it has been a pleasure to serve you the past 2 years. With that said, it is time to pass the reigns and I would highly encourage you all to get involved with the running of this club. It is a small time commitment, especially when you weigh in the friendship formed amongst fellow Tbirders.

Until then, happy Tbirding,

Chris

I have heard some rumbling from the US Postal Service that they will probably raise there rates again this coming January, 2015 to 50¢ for first class mail or the first ounce.

With the advent of computers, email services and text messaging which allow everyone to keep in contact at the speed of an electron with each other with just the push of a button, is the driving force of the postal increase.

The newsletter is no exception. There are many factors which increase the cost. It is becoming very expensive to continue to mail out copies of the newsletter to those who do not yet have a computer or those who can not figure out how to download the emailed copy or those who still do not wish to share their email: address with us.

Printing costs have tripled and postage as well since I took over as your editor in 2009. With the advent of rubberized tracks Homecomings no longer allow cars to drive the Queen and her court around the field which was a major money maker for us and our treasury has dwindled exponentially. Current cost to mail out one newsletter for a year is over $27.00 per member household. I will be asking your officers for some guidance in this matter.

Welcome to a new year and another month in the Sunshine Corner!

I spoke with our newest member Chuck Chirco and would like to advise him that maybe golf isn’t the game he should be playing. It appears that he was playing golf and pulled a tendon in his leg. He is looking at somewhere around a 5 week recovery period. I also spoke to Jerry Sellers, seems he was hospitalized with pneumonia. He is now out of the hospital and home resting although he is still under heavy antibiotics. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jerry & Chuck for a speedy recovery.

It was a pleasure to see so many of our members at the Oktoberfest party and catch up with everyone. June Lipuma, Richard Helms, Linda Haslinger & Darlene Matthey are all recovering nicely from their surgeries. Tom Matthey said his energy level isn’t back to what it used to be yet but he is doing well. Dan Jurenka is looking good and says he’s feeling well also after his cancer scare.

If I have missed anyone, please give me a call and let me know how you are doing or if you have any planned surgeries.

See Sunshine Report continued on page 11

Please wish a Very Happy Birthday to each of the following members who may be adding another candle to their cake but stay young at heart and certainly do not age in our eyes!

Nothing starts the holiday season off better than an Oktoberfest party. Some people do it by flying to Munich Germany, paying for overpriced hotels and standing in long lines for a beer, brats and toilets! Our club members know that there is a better way to

celebrate this fun festival and that will be by gathering at Dan & Christine Jurenka’ s home for our very own Thunderbird Club festivity. Twenty nine T-Birders decided to kick off the upcoming holiday season with a fun-filled

May Everett, Irene Zaleski, Lois Kniza, Nancy Robins, David Natali

Oktoberfest. The event was held at club members Dan and Christine Jurenka’s home, which was decorated with pumpkins, fall flowers,

Darline Matthey, Linda Haslinger, June Lipuma

leaves and all the things that make you think of fall and a festive fall gathering.

An Oktoberfest isn’t an Oktoberfest without special foods. They were all there and delicious: Bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, German chocolate cake supplied by Pete DePaola and plenty of tasty seasonal appetizers and side dishes. Last but not least, any club event - especially one with an excellent turn-out such as this – occurs only with the help of many club members. Special thanks to Bob and Rita DePaola for getting the RSVPS while Dan & Christine were busy, Chris Pond for handling

kitchen. . . and of course to all the members who came and brought an abundance of delicious seasonal side dishes and appetizers. A great time for one and all. Happy Holiday Season! As this event started the club’s holiday season, our annual Christmas Party will keep the good spirit going. See further details in this newsletter.

2 Auto Center Drive Tustin, CA. 92782

The club officers have some exciting news. We have something new in store for you. In the past our monthly officers meetings were held at a member’s home. We have had no general meets to speak of. Now we are changing all of that. We have a chance to have all our meetings in a central location in Orange County. We were able to secure a meeting facility in Tustin, CA Many thanks to AutoNation's general manager Brian Beeman.

Brian wrote me: “I am excited about the relationship we will build with the Thunderbird Circle…. I feel it will be mutually beneficial”.

The management of Auto Nation Ford in Tustin has graciously invited us to hold our general meetings in one of their conference rooms.

It has been confirmed by the general manager of AutoNation that our next meeting will be on November 16th at 3:00 PM in a private conference room. We are in the process of nailing down the date so every month our meeting will be the same. For example: the third Sunday of each month. We still need to confirm this aspect of our meetings. We will keep you informed just as soon as we know for sure.

We will also be able to show up to 7 cars at the dealership. We would like to have 55, 56, 57, and Retro birds 02-05 at this showing. I for one will bring my 56.

Please contact me (cell: 714-721-6756 or email @ [email protected]) so that I can prepare for this event.

October 5th was the 45th Annual Early Ford V-8 Club Picnic & Car show. This is their big event of the year. In addition to all Fords to be entered a few other makes were also accepted to the show. There were several years of Ford Cars and trucks. Even a Ford fire truck was present. Once again they chose to use Twila Reed Park in Anaheim for the car show and of course parking on the grass was the order of the day.

Under a beautiful blue sky with mild summer type temperatures were on order. Everything was perfect for the show. Over 100 cars and trucks showed up and were on display.

With so many cars and trucks on display the chief judge had to ask for the assistance of several others to do the judging. There were over 30 categories to be judged, but they got through it and everyone had a fantastic time.

This is just a sampling of the cars that were on display.

The sign out front says "Lew Webb Motor Car Company" but that doesn't reveal the incredible experience you'll find inside that walls of this venue. This is a first-class event center where you can schedule a catered meal for a charity event, business meeting, work presentation, birthday party, or fund raiser. The facility is spotless and is geared for a smaller crowd.

The fantastic thing about Lew Webb’s is that he has a collection which features over 30 high-end, gorgeous classic cars & neon signs which are on display for his guests to view. You'll see a rare Tucker, one of actress Joan Crawford's cars, a Duesenberg, and many more amazing vehicles. You'll be impressed even if you are not a car buff.

Lew learned at an early age what it meant to work hard and earn your way in this world. His mother, Daisy, taught her children the tenacity that has made Lew Webb the success he is today.

After marrying his high school sweetheart, Margaret Stafford, the Webb’s' moved to California. Here they raised three children - Karen, Lew Webb, Jr., and Jeremy. On August 15, 2013, the Webb's celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Lew Webb and his wife Margaret worked together to build their business. They opened the doors to their first business in 1961 and successfully owned and operated eight automotive dealerships and two body shops in the Los Angeles/Orange County areas. The Webb Automotive Group captured a spot in the Forbes 500.

Privately owned Webb Automotive was ranked as the 35th-largest new-car chain in the nation based on gross sales. The eight Webb dealerships sold 12,621 new cars and trucks in 1996, the most recent year for which figures are available.

Webb Automotive, one of the largest auto chains in the U.S., with $493 million in sales in 1996, owns dealerships in Orange and Los Angeles counties. In 1998 Webb Automotive owner Lewis Webb was offered $200 million for the dealership group by Republic which already owns 22 dealerships in Southern California.

Now that we have tickled your fancy, we have been invited to attend a private showing of this fantastic collection, and we will be joined by the creator of the collection to answer any question you may have. The $10.00 per person fee has been waved just for the Thunderbird Circle membership and their quest. We will be enjoying a catered lunch served to you by “Love at First Bite” catering. This is a sit-down luncheon in a glorious setting that will appease any aficionado.

Pease contact Ed Zaleski to make reservations. We must have an accurate count for the caterer. Phone: 714-721-6756 or email: [email protected]

What more information on the venue or for bookings of your own? The person to contact is Ron Hitter. He can be contacted several ways. Phone him at 949-586-3257 or email to [email protected]

They offer intimate lounge seating for 14 to 16 persons, comfortable sit-down dining for up to

80 or receptions for up to 200. They offer a full kitchen with easy catering access, pantry/wet bar and portable bar available, three big screen TVs with cable & DVD features, internet access, integrated sound system with iPod

docking, CD, juke Box, wireless microphone and auxiliary audio input. For more information go to: www.lewwebbmotorcarcompany.com

ARE YOUR WINDSHIELDS CLEAN? By Dave Tulowitzky

The most common overlooked item I see at all the car shows is the quality of the window glass. Car restoration experts do an amazing job on the body, motor, and interior, but the glass is typically not in good shape. I think that many do not know that there are a few glass restoration specialists out there that can make your glass look amazing too. Glass Restoration Inc. in Sarasota, Florida is one of them. (www.GlassRestorationInc.com). Glass is best restored during the car restoration process, and "Out of Body". However, you can take your glass to them and have it restored while you are working on the other parts of the car.

Tom Chapley of the Virginia Classic T-Bird Club says that he has always had problems getting the windshield of his cars clean. No matter how many times he cleaned the glass there would always be a film, water spots or streaks on the glass. Tom recently purchased a glass cleaning kit from the Auto Geek, called “Diamondite Glass Cleaner”.

The cleaner is a foaming powered clay that you apply with a special sponge that is included. After scrubbing the glass with the powered clay, you clean the glass again with their special spray cleaner. I did this on the windshield of my 1957 T-Bird and was amazed at how clean and sparkling the windshield was. This stuff really works! The kit also includes a spray can of sealer to be used after the cleaning.

The kit cost about $49. Tom recommends just purchasing the foaming clay cleaner at $15. You can purchase the Diamondite glass cleaner at www.autogeek.net. Below is information taken from the Auto Geek website.

A whole new perspective on cleaning automotive glass. Diamondite Glasswork Clay is an elastic clay resin that cleans out the microscopic grooves of glass to leave it incredibly slick and thoroughly clean. Glasswork clay cleans by gliding over the glass on a bed of lubricant and grabbing contaminants that are bonded to the glass. Clayed glass will be incredibly smooth, clear,

and clean. Glass is not a perfectly smooth material. It is made up of microscopic grooves that can become filled with dirt, debris, and oils from the world surrounding your vehicle. Glass cleaners can remove what is on top of the glass but the only way to remove what in the glass is Diamondite Glasswork Cleansing Clay.

How do you know if the glass needs to be clayed? Put a plastic sandwich bag over your hand and lightly rub your fingertips over the glass. If you feel a rough, gritty texture, the glass is covered in environmental contamination. Diamondite Glasswork Cleansing Clay removes bugs, overspray, tar, oil, tree sap mist, rail dust, and environmental pollutants. It even removes mineral deposits that haven’t yet etched the glass. There is no gentler, more thorough way to clean glass. Detailing clay is an elastic compound capable of grabbing debris lodged in a porous surface and trap-ping it to completely remove it from the surface. All clay requires a lubricant to work safely.

Diamondite Glasswork Cleansing Clay works hand in hand with Diamondite Glasswork Clay Lubricant to protect automotive glass as it is cleansed of stubborn impurities. The slippery lubricant allows the clay to glide over the glass, picking up contamination as it goes. After claying, glass will appear clearer and feel incredibly slick to the touch.

Directions: Mist the glass generously with Diamondite Glasswork Clay Lubricant. If doing a windshield, work in quarter sections. You may wish to cut the clay bar in half and reserve the other half in case you drop the clay you’re working with. Spread the clay flat over your fingers to give yourself an adequate work surface. Glide the clay back and forth over the wet glass. You will feel the clay grab. This indicates that it has encountered contamination on the glass. Continue to rub the clay bar back and forth until it glides freely. Use a microfiber towel to wipe the glass dry. If any clay residue remains on the glass, mist it with Diamondite Glasswork Clay Lubricant and wipe the glass clean. Continue claying until you’ve cleaned all the glass.

If you performed the bag test again, you’d feel that the glass is slick and smooth with no bumps or grit.

The 41st Pageant of the Thunderbirds is now in the books and as it always is we have fond memories of this fantastic event. I am not sure of the number of Thunderbirds that actually showed up but I can tell you there was a bevy of birds. From the 1955 Baby birds to the 2005 Retro birds and just about

every year in between. Set in a beautiful setting of Twila Reed Park in Anaheim, all one had to do was to walk around and see the beauty on display. The weather was perfect for a car show and the entrants were all spruced up for the occasion. Parking on the grass was the order of the day and the contrast in colors was amazing.

You cannot fully enjoy the beauty on display until you have seen it. I have attempted to include a few pictures which were graciously supplied by Ralph Nunez of the Thunderbirds of Southern California.

Stroke is caused by exposure to secondhand smoke.

Nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their lung cancer risk by 20–30%

Check Alarm Batteries Everyone should have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. Take a few minutes to ensure your alarms will sound in an emergency. Install a battery-operated carbon monoxide

detector near bedrooms. Check or change the batteries in your carbon

monoxide detectors at least twice a year. Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home. Test smoke alarms monthly to ensure they work

properly. For smoke alarms that use regular alkaline batteries, replace the batteries at least once a year. For smoke alarms that use lithium

(long-life) batteries, replace the entire alarm unit

every 10 years or sooner if it chirps or stops working.

Make a disaster plan. Know where to meet other family members in case of an emergency

Keep Foods Safe To help protect yourself and others from foodborne illness, take a few minutes to ensure foods are safe. Wash hands, utensils, surfaces, and cutting

boards after contact with raw meat or poultry and before touching another food.

Wash produce before you eat it. Take a few extra minutes to make sure meat,

poultry, and eggs are cooked thoroughly. Don’t drink raw (unpasteurized) milk or eat soft

cheeses made from it. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours in shallow

covered containers and use within 3-4 days. Report suspected foodborne illnesses to your

local health department. Thanksgiving Day is National Family History Day. A

family health history helps identify people who may be at a higher risk for some diseases. It reflects risk factors that family members share, like genes, environment, and lifestyle. Take a few minutes to know your family health history.

Start a family health portrait today Update your family health portrait as you learn

about family members’ diseases and conditions. Share your family health portrait with other family

members. Encourage them to create one also.

Please don’t forget to keep me in the loop once you hear of anyone who is ill or is having or had surgery. We wish everyone good health, and stay safe! Until next month:
