STATEMENT FROM THE GPS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND

Today the GPS Headmasters met for their regular quarterly meeting at which a range of matters was discussed including the diversity of programs offered in both sporting and cultural activities.

As part of the Association’s commitment to providing quality co-curricular opportunities for students enrolled in our schools, it was unanimously agreed that a review be undertaken of the cultural and sporting programs conducted by the Association.

The Association continues to take seriously feedback from all stakeholders, including recently expressed concerns regarding participation in some GPS competitions.

The Association looks forward to communication with parents and members of the school community upon the completion of the review.

At this meeting, it was determined that the GPS 2010 Calendar will proceed under arrangements as per previous years. A change of calendar to sport per term will be considered for 2012 after considerable consultation. This matter will be considered at the next meeting of headmasters and principals in August 2010. I apologise for any confusion that may have arisen because of my previous communication.

Please continue to support your sons in their endeavours to achieve excellent educational outcomes throughout this period of assessment. I wish you all a successful journey to the end of this semester.

Staff update

We welcome back mrs Karen clarke, who returns to the college after a year on maternity leave. Karen will take up the newly appointed position of enrolment Development officer.

congratulations to ms erica hamp on her sporting achievements at the recent World outrigger Sprint championships in new caledonia. erica won a Gold medal in the single event and a Silver and 2 Bronze medals in the Team events.

The builders are putting the finishing touches on the Purton Science centre and Tierney Auditorium. The buildings are expected to be handed over to the college next week and we will take a couple of weeks to set up classroom furniture, the laboratory equipment/ chemicals and staffrooms in readiness for usage in Semester 2. Feedback from prospective parents and foundation donors has been very positive.

The college is waiting on final approval from eReA with regards to the Treacy Building refurbishment, planned for the second half of this year and also the final development approval and eReA approval for the Trade Training centre, which is also aiming to be completed by the end of 2010. Four brand new facilities completed in nudgee college’s 120th year is very exciting for our community.

Heroes are those who have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle for the nation’s freedom.

Heroes are those who define and contribute to a system or life of freedom and order for a nation.

Heroes are those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation.A hero is part of the people’s expression.

A hero thinks of the future, especially the future generations. The choice of a hero involves not only the recounting of an episode or events in history,

but of the entire process that made this particular person a hero.

edmund Rice was born on June 1, 248 years ago. By the above definition, he was certainly a hero. he crossed cultural, social and religious boundaries to provide others with leadership, opportunity and relationship. In recent weeks on assembly, we have been celebrating our diversity as a community through story telling. We have learned from students from Taiwan, china, Korea and on Sorry Day, matthew connop from the northern Territory, taught our community about the Rainbow Serpent’s significance in aboriginal creation story.

This week we heard from emmanuel Tenorio and Francis De la cruz, who are both of Filipino heritage. They chose to share the story of ‘Jose Rizal, who is revered in the Philippines as a hero for peace and freedom. As we commence our preparations for ‘Pag-Inupdanay with Spirit’ for 2010, nudgee college’s twinning partnership with five schools in the Philippines, I share this little part of emmanuel and Francis’ story with you in the spirit of edmund Rice:

Dr José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was known for being a polymath, nationalist and advocate for reformation in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era, where Spain attempted to colonize the nation under its control; just as the British colonized Australia.

Being an academic in literature, Rizal produced several writings regarding the abusive nature of the Spanish in the Filipino community. One of his most recognized works is a novel called ‘Noli Me Tangere’ or ‘Touch Me Not’ as translated to English.

Although it was Rizal’s first novel, it later became historically significant because it established the

Philippines national identity. More specifically, Rizal, along with the Filipino people, called for this nation to be run independently. The context of ‘Noli Me Tangere’ was mainly political, depicting Spain’s political control in government and affairs in the Philippines as well as the portrayal of corruption and abuse by the Spanish’s government and clergy. These matters would start a string of controversy for Rizal.

Rizal was also visually creative; he created a statue, “The Triumph of Science over Death”, also as a protest to the Spanish colony, depicting their abuse to Filipino women. Through years of protest and advocating for reformation, Rizal was eventually put down by Spanish authorities. On December 30th 1896, at 35 years of age, Jose Rizal was executed for rebellion, sedition and conspiracy. Moments before his execution by a lined firing squad, Rizal refused to face them and turned to the sun and stated his last words in Latin. They were “Consummatum Est” or “It is done” in English; words that Jesus Christ spoke.

In the time after his death, the place where Rizal was executed became a remembrance site paying tribute to his life work, tentatively called “Rizal Park”. Also, the December 30th became a national remembrance holiday for Philippines, celebrated as “Rizal Day”.

These Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on monday July 26th. Requests for an interview time must be made through the Parent Portal on the college website by Friday 16th July. however, if you do not have access to the internet, you can contact the learning and Teaching office before the 16th July to request a paper copy of the request form that can be faxed or to the college. confirmation of appointment times will be posted on the Parent Portal and a paper copy of these appointment times sent home via your son.

These conferences are held to enable you to discuss with your son’s teachers his progress over the full semester. you are encouraged to make an appointment to gauge your son’s progress as the Semester 1 report contains his results for Terms 1 and 2.

upcoming assessment Weeks

As mentioned previously, the next few weeks are busy ones in relation to completing assignments, oral presentations and examinations. years 11 and 12 have their exams spread over the next two weeks. For the two weeks of assessment, there will be only three full cohort exams in year 11 (Wednesday 2 June, Friday 4 June and monday 7 June) and two full cohort exams in year 12 (monday 31 may and Tuesday 8 June). on these days only, normal classes in period 1 will not run for the whole year level but the boys will be expected to be at the college by morning tea time if they are not sitting the scheduled exam. For all other tests, normal classes will continue for all students. For many subjects, assessment will be held in class time and will have no impact on other subjects. All other year levels have been issued with a timetable where most assessment will occur during normal scheduled classes.

Digital education revolution – 1:1 laptops for students

As the end of semester approaches, planning is under way for the rollout of Dell netbooks to all of our year 9 students for Semester 2. This is part of the commonwealth Government’s Digital education Revolution programme to enable every student to have access to a computer whilst at school. There will be a Parent Information evening held before the end of term to outline the details of the programme and to explain the enhanced learning opportunities for our boys. With every boy having access to a laptop device, the already technological rich classrooms will become more exciting and innovative learning places. A letter of invitation will be sent to each family of year 9 boys shortly.

Dance

A big thank you to all of the boys who attended last Friday evening’s social. While some of the outfits and behaviour of the girls left a little to be desired the boys behaviour was in the main excellent. While I was waiting outside after the dance for girls and boys to be collected by parents it was interesting to note a young girl’s comments as she was talking to her friends about the dress, presentation and language of the some of the other girls. her quote was certainly noteworthy as she stated “Don’t these girls realise that if they want to be respected they have to respect themselves first”. It is a message that she has obviously been taught in the home, or at school and one our boys can also take on board as they deal with people, particularly young ladies from other schools. The first sign of respect we need to show is self respect.

uniform support

While I have put this forward on other occasions it is certainly timely to request parents to help in the area of dress and presentation. If you could ensure that the boys get regular haircuts and are well groomed, particularly in the area of being clean shaven it would be appreciated. on the whole the boys are looking good in their winter uniform and presenting themselves well in public but there will always be a few that let the side down.

uSBs and content on electronic devices

It would seem appropriate that a reminder be issued for parents and students regarding inappropriate content found on uSB and electronic devices in the school. The college Policy is that boys found with inappropriate photographs, images or videos are suspended pending investigation. As a school we have certain moral and legal responsibilities and dependant on content repercussions can go as exclusion and police prosecution. It is a difficult task to tackle and police however our stance on this must be firm due to the ill effect such material can have on the feelings, attitudes and beliefs of our young men.

Date claimer!

At 7.00pm on Wednesday 14 July we are lucky enough to be hosting mrs Susan mclean as our inaugural speaker in the newly refurbished Tierney hall. ms mclean is an outstanding and engaging speaker who has developed incredible expertise on the topic of cyber life and cyber safety. her address will be looking at ways in which parents of teenage boys and pre-teenage boys can successful guide their sons (and daughters) through the difficulties of social networking, texting, and electronic society. At a personal level myself, the Directors and house Deans would work through some four or five issues a week that have either been instigated or exacerbated by online activity and comment through either blogging, texting or network posts. They often involve many people, from many different schools and walks of life and the only solution is actually in the educative and preventative measures that are put in place by parents as the boys begin their introduction to these sites and tools. her presentation is of key importance to all parents but of particular interests to parents of children from years 5 to 9.

mrs mclean is a regular presenter and expert on Sunrise as well as being a key advisor to medical practioners, education departments and child protection agencies. her insights and expertise are invaluable. you may like to find out more information on mrs mclean’s website: www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au.

To register to interest please call mrs Vicki Askin on 3856 0336 or email [email protected].

This week we have been visited in the o’neill Building by some of our year 9 Business Studies students who have been showcasing their entrepreneurial talents. Their products ranged from sno-cones to lollies and the touch football competition was a big success! Profits from these ventures will be donated to charity and it was great to see these future businessmen taking an idea from concept to fruition. They have learned many lessons along the way.

The positive feedback from the house Showcase last week has been overwhelming. The connection of our years 5-7 boys with the older boys in their house was a wonderful outcome of this extraordinary and, at times, surprising event. It could never be said that our boys lacked confidence.

As this semester draws towards the final weeks, assessment time arrives and we know that many boys are working very hard at the moment to try and optimise their results. They are busier than ever and from what I have seen walking around the classes the results are evident. on the other hand, as this busyness takes over, some are struggling to strike a balance in their lives. end of term fatigue can lead to all manner of behavioural issues, many of which throw up their own signposts. If you notice anything that may need addressing, please let us know. We will do the same in return.

Term 3 commences

Welcome to Week 8 of Term 2, the start of a very busy end-of-term. The Block exams began this week for year 11 and 12 students and continue for the next two weeks.

Cold Weather

Winter begins officially on June 1, which means some relatively cold weather. I would ask parents/guardians to check with their sons to see if they have warm college clothing including sports gear to cope with the colder conditions. It is an expectation of the college that coats/jackets/jumpers/track suits are approved nudgee college apparel. This is especially important when travelling to other schools – e.g. Toowoomba Grammar away game on June 12.

external Sport

There are boys who play external sport such as rugby league, as well as school sport for nudgee college. For some boys who are too old to be eligible to play for school sport, joining an external club can be their only chance at sport. Recognising this I must take this opportunity to make hosts/families and coaches aware that in the event of a boarder being injured it is the responsibility of the club and or the host in the first instance to attend to their injuries immediately.

It is not acceptable to wait for an extended time in order to drop an injured boy back to the nudgee college health centre. It is expected that club officials attend to injuries and arrange first aid/hospital treatment immediately after the event. Parents/hosts need to be aware that there is not a doctor in daily attendance, except for appointments during the week, and that staff are not readily available to transport injured boys to hospital.

please advise the principal, Mr Daryl Hanly of any intended departure from the College prior to the end of term. [email protected]

Cross Country

nudgee college hosted the GPS cross country meet from hendry oval last Friday afternoon. Seven of the nine GPS schools attended as did St Patrick’s college, Shorncliffe. Being the rugby/football bye, we had a terrific participation rate, and a very successful meet with large fields in all the races.

The 13 years olds had 15 runners, and placed 2nd to a very strong State high team. Dylan Adkins came second in the 14 years 4km and he was supported by James lingard running a strong race and securing a top 10 placing. oliver murphy-Kurth (5th) led the 15 year olds in. he was supported by the Rostron boys and great runs came from newcomers Jack mcloughlin, charlie mcKill and James Sheehan. It was terrific to see the rubgy 15A’s enjoying an afternoon 4km jog too! The final race saw our 16 year old men win the meet with our top 6 all finishing in the top 13. Well done to Kieran Storch, Soren Kingsbury, Jarrod hunter, ollie nugent, matt Burgess and Aidan Sassu. The opens, led by race winner Jonathan Burgess came 2nd overall. Alex o’Regan, Sam chiarabaglio, matt Thompson, Tristan Pagliano and leo Karadimitris were the top six finishers.

A big thank you to all the parents and staff who helped conduct a most successful meet, and to those who came to the cross country launch afterwards.

Debating

nudgee college Debaters competed in their final debate last Friday night against Gregory Terrace. The debate brought this year’s debating to an end for year 8, 9 and 10 students. The year 9 team made up of Jack hardy, edward Keir, Darcy Stein and Sam Tulley have had a challenging season. Across the board all our teams had debates with Gregory Terrace winning by a margin of 1 or 2 points. The debaters have had a challenging season, going up against some tough competition from other GPS schools around Brisbane, debating a variety of topics. The boys have worked incredibly well together this year, always putting in a lot of effort and being supportive of one another. Throughout the season they were often complimented on their excellent speaking skills both by adjudicators and other audience members. congratulations to these boys who have put a lot of work into their debates each week and have shown a great deal of improvement throughout the season. Well done! our Senior A team completed the night on a win. We are waiting for confirmation on a 2nd or 3rd place for the season from the GPS. The boys, along with mr Shane Weir, have put in a lot of effort this year and deserve their successes. I would like to thank all coaches and team members for all their hard work and dedication this season.

With no games last weekend players and coaches had the opportunity to recharge their batteries and I am one of those coaches that believes that a rest is sometimes the best form of training. our next opponent is BBc, whose 1st XI remain undefeated and we will need to play our best football of the season to challenge their claim to this years trophy.

congratulations go to four players in the year 10 team for making the met north Representative Team: Tom Parker, Tom Gilbert, Jeremy croner and Roneill Prasad.

Finally, I would like to recommend to boys the great opportunity to be coached by visiting chelsea Fc coaches over the next school holidays. Further details can be found by visiting the colleges website http://www.nudgee.com/portal/activities/2010/05/17/chelsea-football-club-comes-nudgee-college
