Funny Poems, Silent Dog and Scary Snake
Our family friendly Scramblers walk on Sunday 30 April
proved to be a great success. The children played at "I Spy
Bingo", Pooh sticks, racing around the grass and walked 3
miles into the bargain.
What a great way to get some fresh air, learn about nature and
discover our wonderful local countryside. We hope our
Scramblers will develop a love of walking and, who knows,
may be the Chorley Ramblers of the future.
We want to encourage more families to join us, so do bring
your children and/or grandchildren along. Tell your friends
and family about our family friendly Scramblers walks.
Although, the parent/guardian must be a member of the
Ramblers Association, three “taster walks” are permitted
before joining.
See Page 2 for more information about
getting involved with the Scramblers

Dash4it – The Map Superstore
(dash4it.co.uk)
We've featured this supplier of maps before but they do seem
to offer good value, so here it is again.
I have been purchasing my O/S maps from them at a 40-35%
discount price, which means I can update my maps without
breaking the bank. They have time limited offers, so get on
their email circulation and keep a look out.
I have found the service from the company first rate.
Also on the map purchased you will find that you are able to
download the map onto your mobile, by following the
instructions provided. So go on line and see what you think.

Coach Rambles
Wainwright's Way
Our Coach Ramblers have enjoyed the splendid walking
that Wainwright's Way has offered us through the beautiful
Lake District. In March we rose to the challenge of
trekking over High Street on our way from Troutbeck to
Patterdale and in April the St Sunday Crag hoppers
enjoyed the 360 degree panorama over the lakes and
mountains and the Grisedale Valley trekkers marvelled at
the majesty of the towering peaks of Helvellyn and St
Sunday Crag all around them.
Our trek along Wainwright's Way will conclude with three
fabulous stages:
13 May Grasmere to Langdale
10 June Langdale to Seatoller
8 July Rosthwaite to Buttermere
As usual we will offer a choice of routes and paces to
appeal to a wide range of Chorley Ramblers.
What's our next Long Distance Walk?
The Dales Highway (not to be confused with the
Dales Way), a 90 mile walk across the glorious high
country of the Yorkshire Dales starting at Saltaire in West
Yorkshire and travelling north to Appleby in Westmorland
via Ilkeley Moor, Skipton, Settle, Ingleborough, Malham
and Kirkby Stephen.
Our Dales Highway dates on the next programme
are: 12 August, 9 September, 14 October
What's the future for our Coach Rambles? We are pleased to report that the numbers booked on the
coaches has improved but if you want to see Coach
Rambles continue, do support them by joining the coach on
a regular basis. Tell your friends about the Coach Rambles.
As with all Ramblers activities, folk can attend 3 rambles
before they must join.
To book a place on the Coach or to find out more,
telephone Denny Robinson on 01257 262122.
The cost of a place on the coach is £12.

Our Scramblers need you !
Chorley Ramblers has run a Scramblers programme of
walks since 2002. It was Barbara Williams idea to have
a programme of walks for children and it was the
children who came up with the name of Scramblers,
(Small Chorley Ramblers).
Later Cardiff Ramblers asked if they could use our
Scramblers name and we adopted their logo for use on
Chorley Ramblers website and Scramblers Publicity.
Most of the people who have led Scramblers walks
during our 15 years are no longer able to do so.
We need new blood and new ideas.
We asked the children on Sunday what they would like.
Here are some of their ideas: include a play area at
some point in the walk or a patch of grass where they
can run around; some children love to climb a hill, or
climb steps and count them, or tackle obstacles such as
board walks.
Paula plans to put on a Pokemon walk on the next
programme. Would you believe that collecting
Pokemon can motivate today's children to walk miles.
If you like the idea of encouraging children to have fun
in the countryside then perhaps you would like to get
involved in leading a Scramblers walk. (You must be a
member of the R.A.).
The walks are in the afternoon, once a month,
throughout the spring, summer and autumn, usually on
the last Sunday of the month.
Contact Pat Hough on 01257 241134 to find out more

In our last Out and About we featured the Grid
Reference app for use on smart phones which
displays the grid reference at your current
location.
Another very useful function is you can now
text or email this grid reference with some
additional information back to yourself. This is
very useful when checking walks or reporting a
footpath obstruction. The text or email
information can then be accessed at a later date for reporting and documenting.

Chorley Ramblers and Facebook
To get the very latest walk detail many of our members are using Facebook with a PC, tablet or smart
phone. Some walk leaders regularly post details and pictures of their latest walk.
To join go to the Facebook website. Under Sign Up type your information into the boxes.
Facebook will send an email to the email address you provided.
Facebook will now open your profile and ask you a series of questions to help you get started.
On the Welcome page Facebook gives you the opportunity to connect with people in your email address
book/contacts
The Welcome page also suggests that you get to know your privacy settings.
Add a Profile Picture. You can use either a photograph that is on your computer or can be accessed from
your computer. Many people choose to put a picture of something other than themselves for their profile,
for instance a cartoon or favourite pet.
Facebook is all about connecting with people Facebook allows you to search for people you might know
by typing in their names.
In the Search Box type in and select the Chorley Ramblers Group.
Like most applications there are a lot more features than you will ever need
I suggest if you are unsure select the absolute minimum features and see how it all works. Don’t select too
many friends or groups otherwise you may be overwhelmed by the amount of information you receive.
Help We’ve done really well to attract new members to the Committee. The new blood is great generating ideas and
enthusiasms. We could do even better with some more new members. Using the maxim of many hands make
light work, it would be great to attract one or two new Committee members. These days we meet at the Euxton
Insti and the meetings flow quite quickly and never over-run. It really is rewarding to see new initiatives taking
place and coming to fruition and to be part of the process. It is also vital that we continue to cover the basics,
such as checking Planning Applications to ensure that threats to our public rights of way are spotted and
responded to. It is vital that we continue to check Footpaths. At the moment, I am overseeing both the Footpath
Checking and Planning processes, as well as producing Out and About three times a year. I’m in grave danger of
sinking. So, if you are interested in joining the Committee or helping but without a Committee role, please come
forward and talk to Mike Wisdom or Marian Owen.

Bridge Closure on Heskin 25
Footpath Heskin 25 links Heskin Hall and
Old Heskin Hall. It is a key link in our Halls
of Heskin walk. This bridge has been closed
since June 2015 and despite Marian Owen
chasing progress on repair of this bridge, no
progress has been made. Mid Lancashire
Ramblers, David Kelly is considering using
this bridge closure as part of a drive to raise
the profile of Footpath closure issues with
the new County Council, following the
elections in May

Some of these photographs have already
appeared on Facebook and Chorley
Ramblers Facebook has loads more
photos than Out and About will ever
have space for. So check out Mike’s
article about Facebook on Page 3
