From the Rector

Dear friends, Many churches have formulated Mission Action Plans – MAPS. We will be doing the same this year. Whilst some view these documents with a degree of scepticism (we’ve never had them before!) they are important documents because, like this Diary of Events, they make priorities very clear. A church which prioritises mission and evangelism is a church that grows. Churches which bumble along without any strategic plans are very often churches who have lost their appeal and lost their way. We know that at St. Laurence’s we face a great number of challenges and we have a lot of work to do. This Diary of Events is one way we can prioritise our intention to be more missional, more evangelistic, more outward-looking. In short, we want to be a church which is more faithful to the command of Jesus to “go out to the whole world and proclaim the good news.”

Although it is the regular congregation who undertake most of the work, it is done not for ourselves, but for Christ. With thanks to all those who have made this diary possible, I pray that 2019 will be a year which sees the kind of growth which is essential if we are to remain a vital part of our community.

Father Neil

Worship that engages… Easter Sermon Series

During the season of Eastertide we hear the accounts of how the Risen Christ appeared to a number of people who engaged with him in different ways.

As we remember those encounters that ordinary people had with the Risen Christ, we will think, in our sermons and in discussions, about the worship we offer.

Page 19: Chorley Parish Church of St. Laurence

St Laurence’s Church is situated in the centre of Chorley. It is believed that there has been a Church on that site since Anglo Saxon times. In 1362 there is a concrete reference to a Vicar of Chorley, an offshoot of the Parish of Croston. The Tower is a fifteenth century construction so the Church is by far the oldest building in Chorley.

Its conservation and development to meet the needs of a rapidly changing community should be of vital concern to all Chorley citizens.

Although there is no immediate crisis, in the medium term resources will be required to maintain the fabric of the Church which will be well beyond the capacity of the present congregation.

Throughout its history the Church buildings have been a key element in the social and communal life of the Town and there is every reason why this should continue, developing the use of the Church and its facilities as community assets open for a wide range of secular activities consistent with its primary function as a place of worship.

The Friends of St Laurence’s is being set up to give concrete expression to the delivery of these ambitions. We would like to form partnerships with local affinity groups who will be encouraged to use the Church for meetings and events.

For more information, and to become a Friend, please visit our website or contact us.

Thank you.
