Choreography Principles Final Dance Class Project Fundamentals of Choreography Line Think of the shapes that you can make with your arms and legs. Round shapes, diagonal lines, opposition, parallels, etc. See examples Levels Divide your movement into three levels. Low, middle, & high Its important to use all levels when choreographing to keep interest in your movement Fundamentals in Choreography cont INSPIRATION Use your emotions or past emotional experiences to aid you in choreographing. Love, relationships, fears, break-ups, goals, etc. TECHNIQUE Its always eye catching to see technique in a solo, but its not necessary Dont spend your time trying to reorganize movement that weve used in class. See example Tell a story thru movement. Where does Inspiration Come From? Colors (ex:blue- calming, red- intense) Family Relationships (friends, partners, co-worker) Music Costumes Books or Movies Transforming your Ideas into Movement Where do you start? First start with an emotion (Love) Create & analyze your story Create an introduction, discovery, and resolution. Wanting to be in love, meeting someone you like, going on a first date. Start with some pedestrian movement that represent these emotions (sitting on the floor reading a romance novel) Then incorporate some technique into your routine (see example) Costume Design Elements Color- the color of your design must compliment your story line. Texture- tattered, flowing, shiny, smooth, crystallized, tight, or loose material are all important design elements. Length- The length of your design is important because it can either conceal or reveal the line of the arms or legs. Costume Design Example I Black and White Costume Design Example II Colored Costume Design Example III Costume Design Example IV Final Project Choreograph a one minute solo It can be any style or song (as long as it is appropriate) You must also have your music on a CD or Ipod Complete the costume design worksheet The design should consist a front and back view of the costume It must also be colored! Final Project Continued Written explanation of you Choreography inspiration On the back of your costume design write a one page description. How did you start your choreography process? What was your inspiration? Why did you choose that particular song? What colors influenced you? What obstacles did you encounter? Final Project is due: June 8-11 th Be dressed in your regular dance attire and in your seat for roll call at You will have one minute to explain your costume design and one minute to perform your solo.
