Stand The stars declare his glory Hymn 431

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Psalm li. 9

DEARLY beloved people of God, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, hum-bly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and neces-sary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me;

A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister, all kneeling.

ALMIGHTY and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou them, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

Welcome to Choral Evensong. We hope that you will enter into a time of prayer by letting the voices of the Choir lift

your thoughts and prayers to the throne of God’s grace. While the Choir will pray most of the responses and canticles on your behalf, you are invited to participate heartily in the singing of the hymns. Please silence electronic devices.

ALMIGHTY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being pen-itent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sit The Psalm: Psalm 19 Anglican Chant Smart, Flintoff

1 The heavens declare the glory of God * and the firmament sheweth his handywork.2 One day telleth another * and one night certifieth another.3 There is neither speech nor language * but their voices are heard among them.4 Their sound is gone out into all lands * and their words into the ends of the world.5 In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun * which cometh forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a giant to run his course.6 It goeth forth from the uttermost part of the heaven, and runneth about unto the end of it again * and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.7 The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul * the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple.8 The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart * the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes.9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever * the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold * sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb.11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught * and in keeping of them there is great reward.12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth * O cleanse thou me from my secret faults.13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me * so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence.14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart * be alway acceptable in thy sight,15 O Lord * my strength, and my redeemer.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Then God spoke all these words:

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it.

Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Sit The Gospel: John 2:13-22The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Kneel Magnificat Charles Villiers-Stanford This is the song of Mary when she was told that she was to be the

mother of Christ; forming a bridge between the two lessons.

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Kneel Nunc Dimittis Charles Villiers-Stanford

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; for my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people. To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Stand The General Thanksgiving (said by all)

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all people. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days, that I may be certified how long I have to live.Behold, thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; And verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain;he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? truly my hope is even in thee.Hear my prayer, 0 Lord, and with thine ears consider my calling;hold not thy peace at my tears.O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength, before I go hence, and be no more seen.

“Episcopally Speaking” A closer look at the language and movements of the Episcopal Liturgy.

Confession of Sin An acknowledgment of sin, as in Ps 51: “Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.” Confessions of sin during the liturgy are general, made by all the people. The church also provides for confessions of sin by individual penitents, and for their absolution, pronounced by a bishop or priest. A declaration of forgiveness may be stated by a deacon or lay person who hears a confession. The BCP provides two forms of service for the Reconciliation of a Penitent (p. 447, 449). The Reconciliation of a Penitent is one of the sacramental rites of the church (p. 861). The secrecy of the confession is morally absolute for those who hear a private confession. Campers get a chance to set aside their everyday schedules, comforts, and pressures to enter a community that allows them to develop spiritual practices and friendships that can last a lifetime. Daily prayer and love are knit into each aspect of camp life, providing faith formation at its finest. Children are given time and space to recognize and celebrate the simple and often ordinary joys of being how God made them. From kitchen patrol to campfire circle you are asked to embrace community while finding your own self. Camp allows children to “unplug” from the outside world. Connections are formed through talking with one another, sharing meals with new-found friends, participating in fun games, and laughing with each other, all the while building lasting relationships with God, self, and others.

Like an inviting path that twists unpredictably through the forest, this book will puzzle and enchant with dazzling snowflakes and snow devils, dark spruce and and wild animals and berries covered with snow, hardship and solitude, beauty and danger and rekindled love. Episcopal Youth Community (EYC)EYC is a Sunday evening program that meets throughout the academic year. EYC gives students a space to explore, deepen, and sustain their relationship with Christ, learn more about the church, and find ways to connect with peers through food, fellowship, prayer, and fun!

Most Sunday evening’s youth and volunteers will meet in the Baker Wing Basement Room 012. Junior and Senior EYCs are split for activities and games, but we all eat together between programs. Throughout the school year we’ll take trips, do service work, and hang out around town. All are welcome to join us whenever possible!
