As a listener and a fan, I have loved Chor Leoni for over twentyyears. I have loved the sound of the Lions as they purr and roar. Ihave loved the group’s willingness to sing every style of music. Ihave admired the choir’s ability to be true ambassadors of theircity, province and country. But mostly, I have loved how they pourtheir souls into every piece of music they sing, whether it issombre or silly.

Now the spotlight has fallen on Chor Leoni’s 21st Season, and Ihave the great privilege of announcing it, not as a fan, but as theLion’s new Artistic Director.

Back again are many favourites - our Remembrance Day concerts,our Christmas offerings and the inimitable Bard on the Beachspectaculars. New this year are two collaborations, the first with


author Jack Hodgins and a folksy musical reading of his newstory Cadillac Cathedral. The second is with our sisters of Elektraas we present two of the most affecting works of the last decadein our Passion and Resurrection choral event. I believe we havesomething for everyone this year, and it is my hope you do notmiss a single note of this year’s season.

I am so excited to continue to share the spirit and music of ChorLeoni with you and to begin a bright new chapter for Vancouver’ssinging Lions.

Remembrances and memories: they inform us, teach us,and unite us in times of joy and sorrow. Memory Eternalexplores these themes in a diverse and expansive programthat includes works by Dominick Argento, JohannesBrahms, Arvo Pärt, Billy Joel, Iron and Wine as well asHaitian folk songs and Indian Ragas. The concert willinclude readings and end with Rupert Lang’s belovedKontakion. Memory Eternal is offered in the spirit ofconsolation that has made our Remembrance Dayconcerts a Canadian tradition.

David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match GirlPassion draws its text and inspiration from the unlikelypairing of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of The LittleMatch Girl and J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In thisemotionally charged work, the pain and longing of ahomeless girl is transfigured into a human Passion storyfor our own time and place.

Rising young choral star Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Passion andResurrection is a fiery, sumptuous, and ecstatic setting ofthe Passion for choir and string orchestra with sopranosoloist. In this work, Ešenvalds has combined texts fromByzantine traditions as well as the Old and New Testamentand has created one of the most powerful and immediatechoral works ever written.
