Although you need to watch the overall amount of fat in your diet, the types of fats you choose are important for your heart health. To get a good balance of fats, aim to reduce your intake of bad fats and boost your intake of good fats.

To help you understand which foods contain mostly good fats, we have shown you a variety of fats and oils and what their fat profiles look like:

Getting theBalance Right

Choosing the right type of fat is important because it has a major influence on heart health. Put simply, fats can be divided into two groups: ‘good’ and ‘bad’.

‘Good’ fats include• Polyunsaturated fatsandare found in foods likeoily

fish, walnuts and certain plant oils such as sunflower oil and spreads made from them.

• Monounsaturatedfatsarefoundinfoodslikeoliveoil,canola oil, peanuts, almonds and avocados.

• Polyunsaturated fats (and to a lesser extent,monounsaturated fats) may help maintain your heart health.

• Theessentialfats-omega3andomega6aregoodpolyunsaturated fats.

• They are called essential because they cannot bemade by the body and you need to get them from the food you eat.

‘Bad’ fats include• SaturatedandTrans-fatswhicharebadforyourheart

health.• Saturated fats can be found in foods like butter,

full-fatdairy,cream,sausagesandotherfattymeats,as well as some take aways such as pizza and snacks like potato chips.

• Trans-fatsarefoundnaturallyinsmallamountsinmeatand dairy, but the main sources are found in foods like pre-packagedcakes,doughnuts,biscuitsandpastriesand some take aways (which also tend to containsaturated fat).
