In an effort to keep students and faculty better focused on their core tasks and improve the security of the institution’s network, several schools have begun implementing content management. These internet policies set restrictions on web content deemed as inappropriate or that may harbor malicious code aimed at infecting networks.

While this is beneficial within the confines of the campus network in protecting school-owned and student BYOD devices, it does not protect devices that exit and reenter the network. Let’s say that a teacher, or student, is working on projects from their home internet connection and their system unknowingly gets infected – they now become a risk for handing off that infection the next time they connect to the campus network.

The challenge is then figuring out how to protect students and teachers so they can safely access the content they need. The best way to restrict content without blocking content students and faculty may need to access is with a VPN, or Virtual Private Network.

By using a VPN, students and faculty can securely connect to the campus network remotely and enable their internet activity to be protected by the school’s firewalls and content management policies, just as if they were on campus.

According to an annual report from the nonprofit organization EducationSuperHighway, the number of students with access to high-speed internet has surged, reaching an additional 20 million students since 2013.

With more and more students accessing the internet at home and at school, institutions must determine how to secure their networks.

A VPN secures your internet connection via encryption. All of the data you send and receive is encrypted and secured, allowing users to surf the web free of hackers and snoopers.

Much like a home security system, a VPN ensures a safe online experience for students and educators alike.

The Benefit to StudentsStudents have several responsibilities to attend to both in and out of school. By using a VPN provided by their school, they are able to securely access important resources on their network whether they’re at home, in class, at the library – wherever!

If you’re a frequent user of public Wi-Fi hotspots, a VPN connection keeps your identity on open networks protected and keeps confidential information private.
