Building Your Artisan Wall1. Prepare your site for the wall. Make sure that you have located any conflicts with utilities before you be-

gin digging by calling your local service to have utilities marked. Mark where you want your wall to be located. Be sure to take into account the setback of the units if the top of the wall location is important.

2. Dig trench for the base leveling pad for the wall. This trench should be deep enough to allow placement of six inches of compact-ible material and allow about 3 inches of the bottom course to be embedded. This helps secure the wall.

3. Place the base material in the trench, making sure that it is placed to the desired height, and is level. Compact thoroughly. Place and carefully level the first course of units, checking that they are level side to side and front to back. For best results, use a level that can span several units. If your base trench is along a changing grade, you can “step up” the base course as shown below. If you need to do this, start the first course at the low point of the grade.

4. Place the remaining courses of the wall. Backfill using free draining crushed aggregates for the foot behind the wall and then regular backfill behind that. Be sure to compact the backfill thoroughly as you add each course and compact to 95% density.
