bars and guns. They were led by the group of Jacques to the Bastille. Those patriots were determined to
take over the Bastille, free the prisoners and destroy all instruments of torture. Moreover they hang
soldiers on the street's lamp posts with no mercy. They also burned all prisons and chateaus throughout

Monsieur Defarge, together with the Jacques, led the angry mobs to the Bastille and managed to take
over until the white flag rose. He asked for the secret cell and could reach the North Tower where the

dangerous journey but Mr. Lorry said he was the most suitable one to make the journey and that for the
sake of Tellson's, he was ready to go through all those troubles. Moreover he said that Jerry Cruncher

Monsieur Dearge said these words to the group of Jacques leading the angry mob. They headed to the
Bastille and attacked it with cannons. They decided to burn it down after freeing all the prisoners and

Madame Defarge said that to one of the soldiers outside the Bastille. She wanted him to pay for

also put Dr; Manette in prison for a long time without any guilt. At the end of his letter, Dr. Manette

A young lady visited Dr Manette, she was the wife of younger brother of the Evermonde. She had

prison describing the whole situation. He described how the two Evermonde brothers had caused the
death of the sister and her husband and brother.

These words were said by the Tribunal after they heard Dr. Manette’s paper which he had written in
the prison. The Tribunal voted again that the aristocrat Charles Darnay St Evremonde, nephew of the
murdering Marquis should be put to death.

Carton said these words to Barsad in front of Dr. Manette. He had introduced Barsad to Mr. Lorry and
told Mr. Lorry that Dr. Manette’s influence couldn’t save Darnay that time after he had been arrested
for the second time. So he had to find another solution and that would be by the help of Barsad.
Chapter 10 1- “He looked just like Evermonde !” Comment
Madame Defarge said that to her husband M. Defarge and Jacques three when Sydney Carton entered the
wine shop and ordered a drink. When Madame Defarge eyed Carton, she remarked on the resemblance
between Carton and Charles Darnay.

Madame Defarge said that to her husband M. Defarge when he asked her to have mercy on Dr Manette
and Lucie and to stop revenge on the Marquis’ family. She told him that she wouldn’t stop until she cut all
their heads off. She reminded M. Defarge of what the Marquis’ family had done to her family.

Madame Defarge went to Lucie’s house to make sure that Lucie and her daughter hadn’t escaped. She was
met at the door by Miss Pross. Madame Defarge tried to force her way into Lucie’s room but Miss Pross
tried to prevent her so they struggled and fought. Madame Defarge drew her pistol so Miss Pross grabbed
her by the waist. A sudden explosion ended the struggle. Madame Defarge fell dead on the ground. Miss
Pross became deaf.

Sydney Carton promised Lucie that he‘d sacrifice his life for her or anyone dear to her and he kept her
promise. Carton went to Darnay‘s cell and exchanged his clothes with him. Then he carried him with John
Barsad out of the cell and stayed in the cell in Draney’s place. Carton went to the guillotine and was
hanged instead of Darnay.
8- The young girl didn’t scream while being wrenched. Why do you think that?
I think she didn’t scream because she seemed to accept her fate. She had nothing to do change her fate.
9- Do you think that Madame Defarge’s motives justify her actions? Why?
Yes, I think so. She was full of hatred and anger towards the Evermonde family.
She had to take revenge on the Marquis’ family because they destroyed all her family. They killed her
father, her brother, her sister and her sister’s husband.
No, I don’t think so. Because revenge is a double edged weapon that strikes both the victim and the
avenger. Madame Defarge wished to kill Lucie by her pistol but it turned against her and she was shot by
it.
