Abstract:Benzoin was synthesized into benzilic acid via a multi-step synthesis reaction. Benzil was first produced via the oxidation of an -hydroxyketone, which as previously stated was benzoin, using a mild oxidizing agent. The benzil was subsequently synthesized into benzilic acid through the rearrangement of the -diketone benzil. The rearrangement being made possible through the production of a stable carboxylate salt within the mechanism which when acidified yielded the desired product. To ensure the correct compounds were formed experimental melting points were taken of benzoin, benzil, and benzilic acid and compared with literature values for the respective compounds as well as Infrared Spectroscopy being taken to verify the structures of the compounds were consistent.

Introduction:Benzilic acids major uses are as a precursor in the synthesis of the chemical warfare agent as well as in the manufacture of certain pharmaceuticals and hallucinogenic drugs. It can be produced by means of . In this particular experiment benzilic acid will be synthesized via the multi-step reaction using benzoin as the starting material. Benzil will first be the first product synthesized by means of an oxidation reaction taking place between Benzoin, an -hydroxyketone and the mild oxidizing reagent nitric acid. Benzilic acid can then be produced using potassium hydroxide as a reagent. This will cause the rearrangement of the -diketone benzil. First the potassium hydroxide will react and form potassium benzilate, a stable carboxylate salt, which will then react with hydronium (acidification) to form benzilic acid.
