ABSTRACT

A discomycete within the Dermateaceae, Chlorosplenium chlora, is described and illustrated in this paper. It is new to Taiwan.

Keywords: Chlorosplenium, Dermateaceae, discomycetes.

Introduction

Many green inoperculate discomycetes were previously assigned to Chlorosplenium (Dixon, 1974). Three species of Chlorosplenium, C. aeruginascens (Nyl.) Karst., C. aeruginosum (Fr.) De Not., and C. fusisporum Liou and Chen, were previously reported from Taiwan (Liou & Chen, 1977). Dixon (1974), in his monographic treatment of Chlorosplenium, proposed using Chlorociboria for the green-colored and wood-staining species. Hence, the first two species are now placed in Chloroci-boria (Helotiaceae) as C. aeruginascens (Nyl.) Kanouse ex C.S. Ramamurthi, Korf & L.R. Batra. and C. aeruginosa (Oeder) Seaver ex C.S. Ramamurthi, Korf & L.R. Batra. The status of C. fusisporum is unclear because the type specimen cannot be traced. This paper re-ports Chlorosplenium chlora (Schw.: Fr.) Curtis as a new record to Taiwan. Measurements were made in a water mount, and specimens are de-

posited in the herbarium of the National Mu-seum of Natural Science, Taichung, Taiwan (TNM).

most cells giving rise to short brown-walled hyphoid hairs. Asci 8-spored, cylindric-clavate, 54–57 × 4–5 μm, apex sub-conic, pore turning blue in Melzer’s reagent, arising from repeating croziers. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoid, 1.5–2 (–3) × 6–7(–9) μm, hyaline, smooth, with 2 or 3 guttules. Paraphyses filiform, septate, blunt at apex, 2–3 μm in diam.

Korf (1959) collected specimens of this spe-cies in Japan during autumn months. It is com-mon in North America (Seaver, 1978). Dixon (1974) gave a detailed description of this spe-cies and noted that most collections were found from spring to autumn. It seems to have no spe-cific growing season in Taiwan, as specimens examined in this study were collected in mixed
