Chippewa Valley High School Winter Drum Line Member Handbook
and Contract
Attendance In order to succeed in any activity everyone must put forth 100% all the time. If one person is missing from the rehearsal it affects EVERYONE! Attendance to all CVHS Winter Drum Line (referred to as CVHS WDL from now on) events are mandatory, unless it is a school conflict or family emergency. All conflicts MUST be communicated at the beginning of the year through the table at the end of the contract. Failure to communicate absences in a timely manner could result in dismissal from the ensemble. If you are absent from a rehearsal or performance, communication must be sent through email form so there is documentation.
Rehearsals Be prepared for rehearsals! This means many things. First you are on time and ready to play at the downbeat time. Second, when you are given music, it is expected that by the next rehearsal you will have it learned. This means that you have familiarized yourself with the music and have begun memorization. Third, you must bring your binders, sticks, pencils, etcetera to every rehearsal. Remember, you are committing your time, energy, and effort to perform with others. That means if you are not prepared, you are letting the other members down who have prepared. Do your part to make this a great year!!
Binders It is your responsibility to have a binder with page protectors and a pencil in said binder at every rehearsal. This is where all warm-ups, show music, calendars, etcetera will be kept. If you forget your binder at home, someone must get it and bring it to you. As most of you will be playing different parts, it is imperative that you have all of your items with you at every rehearsal.
Fees The fee for membership is $300. You will also be expected to pay for your performance shoes and either participate in or “buy-out” of the CVHS WDL fundraisers. The $300 fee covers the following for the CVHS WDL:

Equipment trucks
Program design
New equipment purchases This fee can be paid in full up-front or you can use the following payment schedule. Upon contract $100 DOWN-PAYMENT
November 30th 1st payment $100
December 30th 2nd payment $100
January 30th 3rd Payment $100
February 20th (fundraising payment) (This is only if you do not wish to participate in fundraising and “opt out”)
You must make a down payment of at least $100 once you receive a spot. You must also be current with your fee payments to participate with the CVHS WDL. If your payments are behind you will not perform with the ensemble until you fulfill your financial obligations. You can always pay ahead of the fee schedule! If you have extenuating circumstances, please talk with us before a payment is due and understand we may not be able to assist in all situations. All fees are non-refundable.
If a member is dismissed from the ensemble prior to the first show a “prorated portion” may be refunded but only if they are dismissed by the staff of the CVHS WDL. If a member leaves on their own free will there will be no refund.
Fund raisers We have a choice of fund raisers for our members that will directly help them offset their cost of membership. We will also have other mandatory fund raisers, where the money raised will go directly to the CVHS WDL. This is not a cheap sport to compete in, and we need additional funds in order to compete every year. Most lines spend between $20,000 and $40,000 per year for competition, instruments, copyright permission to arrange fees, floor, uniforms, insurance, staff, and entry/membership fees. Fundraisers help offset that cost and keep the cost of membership as low as possible for our members.
Forms If you receive a spot in the ensemble you must fill out and return your signed contract and Medical form. Please ALWAYS be up to date and communicate with the staff. All forms can be found on the website at http://www.cvhs-bands.com/drumline.html

Travel It should be understood that the members of the CVHS WDL will be traveling by car or van to all shows. Parents will be acting as drivers and chaperones. In the unlikely event that you are over 18, you may drive yourself, but you still need to fill out the travel form and turn it in to the staff.

http://www.cvhs-bands.com/drumline.html On our website we will post schedules, itineraries, and other very important information. Members of the ensemble must to check the website every week to be kept up to date. It is your responsibility to check the website for rehearsals and plan accordingly. The music will be posted on the website. It is your responsibility to print out this music and bring it to every rehearsal.
Ethics This ensemble requires a great commitment of time, skill, heart, and hands. Please remember that in everything you do, you are representing not only your high school, but this ensemble as well. We pride ourselves in being the best we can be both on the competition floor and off. Please remember this and conduct yourselves with honor, pride, responsibility, humility, and respect.
Final Thoughts In closing, being a member of the CVHS WDL is a great responsibility with the opportunity to achieve great milestones, music, friends, and rewards. If we all work hard and make the sacrifice, dedication, and commitment to being great, we will be. Members will not only learn how to be great musicians, but also learn life skills such as teamwork, goal setting, responsibility, dedication, and responsibility. I have read the CVHS WDL contract and understand the expectations of the ensemble. I have
also read the calendar for the CVHS WDL and understand that as a member of the CVHS WDL
that I am expected to attend all the rehearsals and shows on the calendar unless a conflict(s)
has been communicated and approved in writing by the director and staff.
