Many have been involvedwith the committee for a very long time, and if anyone would like to join them, they would be warmly welcomed. All proceeds from the evening gotowards the maintenance andimprovement of the hall which is suchan asset to the village. Will there beanother quiz night next year? Perhaps itis too soon to call, but we all thoroughlyenjoyed ourselves.

Plenty of lighthearted fun, frollics and a partyatmosphere in our Christmas film which is acomedy and even a bit of a panto! It is about thelost years of William Shakespeare, morecommonly known in the film as just Bill. The film’sroots lie in Blackadder and Monty Python, as wellas the British panto tradition, in which smartly sillyscripts meet a lavish dressing-up box and athriving sense of the surreal. The hapless dreamerBill Shakespeare has lost his job as a member of aStratford-upon-Avon lute band called Mortal Coiland is determined to seek his fortune as aplaywright in London. There, he struggles forrecognition, becoming entangled in a number ofhilarious capers including a plot to kill Elizabeth Iwith a drunken, gloriously self-serving Earl ofCroydon.A great fun evening to be had by all. We will behaving a curry themed supper, free popcorn, plus,of course, a terrific bar.

The Duke'sservant scares the dog, who keeps running home, but worse is to come when the Duke moves to theScottish Highlands for the holiday season takingLassie with him!

Many of you will have known Anne whovery sadly passed away in Octoberfollowing an emergency operation atWatford General Hospital.Anne lived in Old School Cottages, underthe imposing clock, for twenty yearshaving moved there with husbandGraham and their dog, Cara, in thesummer of 1996. Within weeks of theirarrival, both Anne and Graham threwthemselves into village life and togethertheir voluntary involvement in theChipperfield community included thelocal W.I., Chipperfield Care, village hallbookings, keepers of the church keys, bridge players and, of course, Anne wasjoint editor, along with her good friendLiz Holliday, of Chipperfield Newsbetween November 1999 and March2011. Anne was born in Wiltshire and grew upwith her parents and younger sister, Jane,in Westbury. They were both horse-madyoungsters who rode their own poniesevery day they could and won manycompetitions at their local Pony Club. After A’Levels Anne spent some time inParis perfecting her French beforereturning to the UK to train as a secretary. Her first job was with Wiltshire CountyCouncil followed by a short stint workingfor her father at Boulton’s Glove Factory, which she described as being “not a greatsuccess” before moving to London. It washere that she was introduced to Grahamby a mutual friend and after a whirlwind

romance they were married within 6months in September 1961 in Bath.Graham and Anne were married for over53 years and had two children, Charlesand Sara, who both live with theirfamilies in St Albans. As well as enjoying the theatre, lightmusic, reading, visiting and entertainingfriends, Anne was passionate about herdaily constitutional walk in her ‘belovedwoods’. Even after her dog Cara died shetook herself out into the woods every day.It was a place where she shared manyhappy times with friends and her adoredgrandchildren, especially during tadpoleseason.Anne loved to travel and was luckyenough to visit many exciting places, including Canada, USA, South Africa,Jordan, Russia and pretty much all of theEuropean countries. Albania wasprobably the only one she hadn’t tickedoff the list! Even after the death ofGraham in 2015, Anne continued totravel with friends and family and her lastholiday was in Lanzarote in September. She even managed to print off her ownboarding card – something she wasimmensely proud of achieving! It is without a doubt that Anne’sintelligent wit, support and generositywill be missed by all her friends inChipperfield, but be comforted in the factthat it was a privilege to have known sucha wonderful lady.

speciality Italian vegetables and their use in Italian cuisine. Prior to his talk, Paolo setthe scene by playing some traditional music on the accordion. He explained how he haddeveloped the company, 'Seeds of Italy', which distributes the very special seedsproduced by the oldest seed growers in the world which has been operated by the Franchifamily since 1783 based in the Alpine city of Bergamo, what an enjoyable evening! CHIPPERFIELD ROYALBRITISH LEGIONREMEMBERS

On Sunday 13 November, the AnnualAct of Remembrance was held at theWar Memorial, where wreaths were laidon behalf of the RBL Branch, the ParishCouncil, St Paul’s School and theBrownies. This was followed by thetraditional Service in St Paul’s Churchconducted by the Revd John Kirkby. Chipperfield is recognised by the RBLas a village with a truly outstandingtrack record for its Poppy Appeal. Thismonth, once again, its devoted poppysellers have called at all the houses in thevillage, whilst local businesses haveagain displayed collecting tins on theirpremises. As this issue of Chipperfield News goesto print, we still do not know the result, which will be reported in the next issue. However, we do know that our sixcollectors with buckets at the villagefireworks on 5 November reported largenumbers of generous donors which willhopefully have given us an excellentstart.

Giles Wyburd, Chairman,Chipperfield Branch RBL

I am in the garden digging out brambleson a crisp bright morning at the beginningof November. The sun is picking out allthe autumn colours. The acers, somebright red, others the colour of butter, look wonderful, a Red Kite is gliding in aclear blue sky, but something is missing.Ted, my dog, and the cat are sunbathing, but the garden is so quiet. There are nosheep in the garden, no bleating, and nobegging for a bit more breakfast! Theyhave only been gone a week and I missthem.Keeping just two or three ewes and a ramhas its problems; a ram will usually havetwenty to twenty five wives and he soongets frustrated and starts throwing hisweight about. By the end of Novemberlast year I was covered in bruises and so

sadly he had to go. I gave him to a youngman with eighteen or so ewes in need of ahusband so, in the end, we were all happy. It was so nice to be able to go into theewes without being head butted. Theycertainly do what it says on the tin! This year I have been really lucky, as afriend who keeps about twenty ewes saidI could take mine to his place for‘tupping’. He has a lovely Ryland ramand keeps a couple of castrated males or‘wethers’ to keep him company in thesummer. So my girls have gone on theirholidays for a month or so, to a very nicespot high in the Chilterns. The old saying is, that if the ram goes tothe ewes on bonfire night, it will be lambsat Easter, so I am looking forward to that. But, oh, how I miss them!!

ALL QUIET IN THE GARDEN

IN YOUR GARDEN THIS WINTERWhat a lovely autumn we have enjoyed this year but already it is getting much colderand, with so few hours of daylight, we must get busy to get the garden organised.Fruit and vegetables. During December we must get the winter digging done so thatthe soil will benefit from the frosts. Add farmyard manure where potatoes, beans andcabbages will be grown next spring but do not add manure where rootcrops will begrown. Pigeons can be a problem at the moment where brassicas are grown, so do takeprecautions, and also protect the buds of soft fruit against damage by all birds. Start toprune apples and pears as soon as the leaves have fallen but plum trees are pruned onlyduring the summer months. New fruit trees and soft fruit can be planted whenever soilconditions allow. New vegetable seeds will be in the garden centre just after Christmasand some can be sown straightaway in the greenhouse. Seed potatoes are on sale fromJanuary and should be chitted, or sprouted, in a light frost free place so that they willbe ready for planting in the spring. Peach trees must be sprayed against leaf curl bymid-February at the latest.Shrubs and perennials. When weather permits, plant container grown trees andshrubs, climbers and herbaceous perennials. Cut down untidy plants in the hardyborders but leave penstemmons until the spring. Grasses, sedums and architecturalplants look good when frosted in winter so are best left untrimmed. Protect tenderplants from the wind and frost damage and tie up the leaves of young cordylines. Applythick mulches around trees and shrubs. Protect the roots of evergreen plants growingin pots against damage from frost. Take pot grown bay trees into the garage should weget severe weather. Take hardwood cuttings now. In the new year, the new season'sseeds will be on sale and some bedding plants can be sown in the greenhouse fromJanuary onwards. Lawn and garden. Now that the grass has stopped growing, get the lawn mowerserviced so that it will be ready to use next spring. Keep off the lawn when it is eitherfrosty or wet and lay down planks if wheeling a barrow across grass areas. Do notapply fertilizer to lawns during the winter. Make sure that leaves are swept up andcomposted. Should we get a snowfall, shake snow off conifers and large shrubs so thatbranches do not get broken. Make sure that outdoor taps and pipes are protected againstthe frost and drain water wherever possible. Feed the birds and leave a few piles oflogs to help the wildlife overwinter. Make as much compost as possible, adding a littleGarotta powder to aid the rotting process.Visit the Garden Centre regularly to get ideas. A winter visit to the RHS gardens atWisley is always useful. Purchase your tickets early for the Chelsea Flower Shownext May, the RHS Flower Show at Chatsworth next June and Hampton Court andTatton Park next July. For tickets, go to rhs.org.uk/shows or phone 08443 387526.

CHIPPERFIELD - A YEAR IN PICTURES

Queen Street Christmas get-together

Blackwell’s Charitable trust cheques

Once again we have added a few extrapages so we can print pictures from some

of the events we might have missed during theyear due to a shortage of space. As you cansee, our village is a very busy community. Theback page Diary is an illustration of just howmany clubs, classes and societies meet hereon a weekly basis. There are regular groupsfrom the three churches, including all theusual children's activities; and other events,

such as the Hollyberry Fair, Horticultural Showsand talks, charity sales, plus plays and pantos bythe Chipperfield Theatre Group. We arefortunate that Chipperfield has a strong musicaltradition, especially choral, with St Paul'sChurch Choir and Chipperfield Choral Societyproducing a number of exceptionalperformances throughout the year. There arealso sports teams for all ages; tennis, football, cricket and indoor bowls. There is now an

annual Grand Firework Display everyNovember attended by thousands. All theseevents help to keep alive the village halls andchurch halls.Thank you to all our contributors withoutwhom there would not be a ChipperfieldNews. We wish you a merry Christmas and a happyand prosperous New Year.

ST PAUL’S AND HOLY CROSSJoy to the world, the Lord is come……This popular English hymn is based on the second half of Psalm 98. It was written byIsaac Watts and first published in 1719. It is a hymn that celebrates the long awaitedreturn of Christ at the end of the age, when death and dying, mourning, crying and painwill be no more….all things will be made new. Joy will fill the world. Each year theChurch remembers the birth of a king, born out of wedlock, out of sight, in humble, unusual circumstances. The cultural niceties of the time meant that the birth of thischild would have brought shame on his mother, her fiancé, and the extended family. The story might have ended quite differently if other aspects of the shame/ honourculture had prevailed rather than Joseph’s goodness, integrity and sense of honour.Nonetheless, the birth of Jesus also brought hope to those who were watching andwaiting for the fulfilment of God’s long awaited promise of a king who would rule theworld with truth and grace. The shepherds got it, left what they were doing and hurriedto see; the wise men understood it, took a risk, set off on a journey travelling far fromhome to an unknown distant land bearing precious gifts in search of this child. TheChristmas story is a remarkable tale of adventure, at its deepest level it speaks truth ofGod’s love for us and invites us to take our part in its telling and re-telling. People often say that Christmas is not Christmas without children. Perhaps it is theiruncomplicated view of the world, their innate sense of right and wrong, the ease withwhich they abandon themselves to the moment, their ability to see and speak truth, thewell of hope, trust and wonder that resides in their hearts. Each year, the remembrance and celebration of the birth of this child draws us back intothe story, enabling us to pause for a moment, to listen again to the story, to go on thejourney and with childlike hearts see once more the wonders of his love. Perhaps it isnot so much the presence of children that makes Christmas Christmas, but theremembering of the presence of the child, this child within us. Let Earth receive her King.

Deep joy be yours this ChristmasMichele, Rector, Benefice of Sarratt and Chipperfield.

FAITH, HOPE ANDRECONCILIATION

On Thursday 27 October, young peoplefrom the Benefice Youth Group, theirfamilies and a dog, walked fromDunstable Downs to Whipsnade TreeCathedral. This 9.5 acre garden was planted in theform of a Cathedral, complete with grassavenues for the nave, chancel, transepts, chapels and cloisters, as an act of ‘faith, hope and reconciliation’, by EdmundBlyth after World War 1. Blyth was inspired to plant a Cathedralof trees in memory of three close friendswho died in the war. Christian Servicesare held to this day in the Cathedral, organised by Whipsnade Tree CathedralFund. Most Christian denominationshave held services there. The TreeCathedral is now owned by the NationalTrust. We admired the chapels, with treespicked to be at their prime in each of thefour seasons, and enjoyed moments ofquiet contemplation, conker collectingand cross country running. The Benefice Youth Group, whosemembers live in the parishes of StPaul’s, Chipperfield, and Holy Cross,Sarratt, meet weekly in term time onTuesday evenings. We have consideredthemes of change and transformationduring this autumn season

SERVICES AT OUR LADY MOTHER OF THE SAVIOURSunday 10am MassSaturday 6.30pm Vigil MassTuesday/Friday 10am Mass

OUR LADY MOTHER OF THE SAVIOUR RC CHURCHIt is not just Christmas that seems to be coming around early! This year, given the way thecalendar plays out, so is Advent, with the first Sunday of this expectant season several daysinto November. Not as early as with those eastern Orthodox churches who still use theJulian calendar, whose equivalent ‘Nativity Fast’ season started on 15 November and willlast 40 days rather than the four weeks of Advent practice in western churches. Advent isthe season that anticipates the coming of Christ from two different perspectives – the ancientlonging for the appearance of the Messiah, and to enhance our alertness for His SecondComing. These themes are certainly reflected in the scripture readings on the four relevantAdvent Sundays. The third Advent Sunday is known as ‘Gaudete Sunday’ which in morestrictly observed times was a sort of day off in the middle of the fasting period. The focus is inevitably on Christmas itself. The penitential nature of Advent has long beenleft behind in the modern celebration of Christ’s birth – it is more ‘Santa Claus is Comingto Town’ these days. But it is a time when we can try to set even brief moments aside tomake room for Jesus in the inn of our hearts, maybe even to share our problems and stresseswith him in the frenzy that the material world can so often create. As the year ends, it is traditional to take a retrospective view, and here in Chipperfieldchange has been the dominant influence. We are now a shared parish with St Saviour’s inAbbots Langley, with Fr Paul Harris carefully balancing his time and travel in a way thatstill gives us two Masses at weekends and two more in midweek. We are grateful to boththe Salvatorian order and the Westminster Diocese for supporting our small parish in thisway. Our next chapter is to refresh our support for African mission projects, and alreadythe parish is active in this regard. Christmas is indeed a time of Goodwill to All Men!

THE BISHOP VISITS ST PAUL’S SCHOOL

The Bishop of St Albans made a twohour visit to St Paul’s School on 7November to see the school, have lunchwith the pupils and meet the staff. Afterhis chicken pasta bake, broccoli andcarrots and a choice of sponge puddingor jelly, four pupils led Bishop Alan andhis chaplain on a visit to each class inturnThe Bishop met the Reception class, listening to stories about ‘wisdom’, andfurther up the school saw lessons inMaths and Phonics. He asked year 5,studying The Victorians, what jobs theywould have liked to do, and receivedreplies such as ‘coal miner’ and ‘parlourmaid’ rather than ‘Mill Owner’ or‘Banker’ – more work needed to raiseaspirations, Mr Fanshaw!!The visit ended with questions from year6. Asked where he was in the churchhierarchy, Bishop Alan sportinglypointed out that it is Vicars who do mostof the work, and Michele du Saire wasseen nodding vigorously in agreement. The Bishop then asked his own question,“Which of these typical emblems of abishop that I am wearing (ring, purplesocks, dog collar and cross on a chain) isthe earliest mark of a bishop?” After twowrong answers, another girl correctlyanswered, “The ring!” and was handed itto try on – but Bishop Alan did point thisout to her with a smile …that not everyman she meets in future will be a bishopjust because he wears such a ring with alarge purple stone in it.

THE BAPTIST CHURCHJoy and hope! Two words that might not be the first to spring to mind for many at thisseason of darkness, wetness and cold but this is what we experience in our church. It is sogood to know that whether the clocks go backwards or forwards, whether it is hot or cold, light or dark we have a hope beyond all hopes and a joy that is secure in our hearts even inthe toughest of circumstances. We have had many changes and challenges this year and they have put us to the test, but wehave also found great comfort in each other and in our wonderful Saviour Jesus. It has beenso encouraging to see the faithfulness of the people in our church and though numbers arecurrently small, there are many great hearts in our little fellowship. Our Little Angels for mums/dads and toddlers is going very strong. Thank you to one of themums, Helena, for stepping up to the plate and taking over the vacant position of chiefenergiser, tea and coffee provider and general organiser. It is beautiful to see and hear somuch life in our church in the middle of the week!At this very busy and tired time of the year, we know we have many things to be thankfulfor and we look forward to what God will do in us and through us in the New Year. As wemove towards some time off with our families and friends celebrating the birth of Jesus, wepray that you also will be filled with the same joy and hope that He has given us, so that wecan all share in it together now and always.Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year and hope to see you in church oraround the village.
