Riyadh Road Runners is a club made up of individuals and families representing a wide range of nationalities and age-groups. The club was formed over 28 years ago by expatriates wanting to have organized group runs in Riyadh. The tradition lives on, with our 15 events per season. A run is held

every 2 weeks to complement the schedule with the Riyadh Wheelers bike club. Our highlight of the running season is the marathon in March.

The website is under construction. Please send us feedback or contact us through the Yahoo address. If you wish to be removed from the newsletter list, please let us know.

SEASON

2011-2012

The club has invested in the purchase of chip timing equipment. All members will be issued with their own personal timing chip, to be used throughout the season. Non-members will pay a refundable timing chip deposit in addition to their event registration fees. The chips are attached to the ankle via a neoprene & Velcro strap, or can be laced into your favourite running shoes. They are extremely durable, long lasting, have no moving parts & will enable us to provide accurate, quick automated race results. For events with multiple loops, we you will be able to see your split times. Please be patient with us for the first few events as we will be familiarising ourselves with the equipment.

The club can only function with your assistance. We need people that are prepared to voluntarily contribute their time to helping with the following committee functions. • Manage the website • Assist with registration • Assist with course set-up • Produce a monthly newsletter • Purchase & transport water, soft drinks, juice etc. • Seek out sponsorship

MEET YOUR COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR THE 2011-12 RUNNING SEASON

During his acceptance speech at the Annual General Meeting, Chris welcomed all returning and new runners, alike. Chris is first to acknowledge the role of effective communication. He stresses the importance to members that they should be able to talk to the committee openly regarding any issues they face, as well as play a proactive role in recommendations they would like to see. His contagious enthusiasm promises an exciting new season to the running club and committee and Chris has many new ideas to bring forward in the upcoming year. Chris works for the British Embassy. Along with his wife Tracy and family, he has been in Riyadh for the past 2 years with 1 more year remaining in SA. He began running cross-country in the UK and has been going strong for15 years. He has completed 3 marathons, 2 of them in Riyadh. A crazy ambition of his is to run an ultra-marathon sometime soon.

Chris Denison - Riyadh Road Runners CHAIRMAN

I would like to pay personal tribute to our retiring Chairman, Chris Munday, who we all know has decided to step down after 5 years of successfully ‘running’ Riyadh Road Runners.I met Chris accidentally and somehow he managed to convince me to join RRR. During the last four years I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him as a club treasurer. Chris really has been an outstanding Chairman and I have been impressed with his dedication to the club. I must acknowledge his contribution to the growth of the club as well as his organizing some exceptional RRR venues.

I believe we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Chris for all he has done to keep our club active. I wish you all the best Chris in your studies and am pleased that you are not retiring completely. Look forward to lining up with you at the start line in the new racing season.

Cheers Mukhtar

THE ELECTED COMMITTEE MEMBERS

JANA has been working at the Prince Sultan Cardiac Center for 3.5 yrs. Her preferred activities of aerobics, dancing, and spinning were more difficult to find in SA, so she started running. Then she fell in love with triathlons and prefers swimming or biking...and of course diving. Jana also is a committee member of the triathlon club.

MARGO first arrived into Riyadh’s triathlon and running scene in 1993. After 6.5 yrs in SA, she settled in Florida to complete over 20 marathons and 3 Ironman Canada triathlons. Now back to SA just 4mos, she’s ready for round #2 at the National Guard Hospital. Her bucket list includes more tri’s and a marathon in all 7 continents.

MUKHTAR works as an IT Consultant/Projects Manager for an investment fund. Mukhtar and his beloved wife came to SA 9 yrs ago from Hampshire, UK. He is an avid badminton player and chairman of the club at the British school. The past RRR chairman talked him into joining the running club 4 yrs ago and he has been treasurer ever since. His last 3 RRR marathons have been fund-raisers for charities, including a school for blind and deaf children in Pakistan. Formula One racing is in his blood: “ Go Team Ferrari”!

LARRY has been involved with the RRR, Triathlon, and Wheelers clubs for the past year in Riyadh. He works as General Manager for Harley-Davidson and previously was National Sales Manager for UMC.

PAUL has been away from N. Ireland for so long that he has forgotten where he left his wife. He first came to Damman and would travel to Riyadh to run their races each weekend when the club first began in ’78. Then he transferred to Riyadh in ’90-91. He did his first Riyadh marathon in ’83 and has since gone on to complete 4 Ironman triathlons, including the revered Hawaii Ironman. He belongs to the Riyadh Wheelers bike club as well as the triathlon club. He has completed well over 20 marathons.

DON has been in SA nearly 4 mos plus 6 yrs from ’96-2002. Presently works for Malath Insurance. He is a member of 3 running clubs in the UK( Baildon Runners, City of Hull AS, and N. Veterans AC). Don started running about 27 yrs ago as a means of getting fit for squash and decided he preferred it. He favors road running up to 10km distances but also enjoys track and cross-country. He looks forward to moving up another age groups (M60) in 2012. He has run 4 marathons and hated them all!

MARC is a Financial Controller with El Seif Engineering Contracting Company and has been in the Magic Kingdom since January 2011. He been in the construction industry for the past 17 years. Marc is from South Africa, is married to Helen and has 2 teenaged daughters. Marc has been running for the past 23 years and has completed well over 100 marathons and ultra marathons. He has completed 13 Comrades Marathons in South Africa. “Running over the years has been very good to me and has brought me much enjoyment, continued good health and many lasting friendships. I am looking forward to putting something back into the sport that has given me so much over the past 23 years”.

LIZ has been working at the British Embassy for the past 18 months. She first began running at age 16 so that she wouldn’t freeze to death on a hockey pitch that was sitting on a cliff top at school. The Snowdonia marathon was her first and she has done 5 more marathons since then. The Snowdonia has been her firm favorite races. Liz also is a member of the Riyadh Triathlon club.

ABDULLAH has kindly accepted the task of staying on the committee and helping with the race results for the next season. Thanks Abdullah.

CLAES has competitiveness in his blood. He did his first 85 km Xcountry skiing race at age 17 and his first marathon in 1967. He moved to Saudi in 1976 and is still here. He was one of the founders of the RRR club in 1978. Claes is still doing consultancy work in Riyadh and running very strong at age 68. He has completed 4-5 marathons, and he continues to “feel very young”.
