“Four Sorts of Mortals Know me: he who weeps, Arjuna! and the man who yearns to know; and he who toils to help; and he who sits certain of me,

Enlightened”.

I was late for class. when I came class was mostly focussed on discussions from previous Sunday.

After sometime we moved onto a new set of Shlok numbered 16 and 17.

Class Discusses. Before Guruji came and explained the meaning in his own way, the class was able to comprehend some interesting things from the shlok,

that two important steps take us closer to the idea of “Nishkam Karma” i.e Actionless Action

One is not indulging in the mental activity(thougts) of expected consequences of Action. Once the action is done and it’s fruit expected at a certain date, the time in between should not be spent in thinking about “what will happen, how will it come out, what if,what then”. This indulgence should be avoided. This can also be called “speculation for the result of Action”

Second is once the fruit(result) is out, it should not let affect you. One should remain unruffled. “Sambhaav”. if you have failed, you better start doing it again and if you have succeeded, more and better opportunities are waiting for you.

So this practice of “not indulging/speculating” and “remaining unaffected” can help achieve the idea of “Nishkam Karma”. And this is what Krishn loves the most about his devotees.

Om tat sat.

Guruji came and began his class,

he first asked, what is the prerequisite of a good human being, to which came out the following,

• One who has the ability of giving happiness to others, helping others to achieve a state of “BLISS”.

• and one who is incapacitated to convey displeasure/hurt to others.

He then told, “Pashu ki Pashuta Barkaraar Hai” but the same cannot be said about “Manushya". “Manushya ki Manushyata Barkaraar Nahi Hai”. We have degraded, as time has passed from Sat to Kal Yug, to an extent unimaginable.

“JO APNEY HUKM KO PEHCHANEY, BANDA TO VAHI HAI”

“One who is tuned and can listen to his inner voice, is the real Man!”

GURUJI CITED FROM GURU GRANTH SAHIB

Meaning of shloka begins

Shri Krishn has described and explained about four kinds of people, who ultimately tends to remember him.

These are

One who is in some kind of difficulty.

Second who is Inquisitive by nature.

third who want things done on a material plane.

fourth who is Knowledgeable and do not seem to have any of the above three reasons to remember him.

All these four kinds are termed and called as “Sukruti”. These four are analogised as four sons of Shri Krishn.

Page 10: Chinmaya Sunday Geeta Class Notes

AartaThe name for first son is “Aarta”.

An Aarta is someone who remembers Krishn when he finds himself in some kind of distress. So it is a distress call. Sort of SOS. This person mostly consist of Tamsik guna.

otherwise he do not seem to remember Krishn much, while passing through a good time.

good thing about Aarta is, in the times of distress at-least this person do not take shelter of alcohol, drugs or any other abuse or addiction. he quickly turns saatvik (for the tenure of the distress), do pooja, karma-kaand, havan-yagya, and believes after chanting the name of Krishn his difficulties would be resolved or become less intense.

Page 11: Chinmaya Sunday Geeta Class Notes

JigyaasuThe second son is named Jigyaasu.

This person basically goes like this,

He says to Krishn “Mainey aapki pooja/sewa ki hai, aap baataye aap kaun hai”

His inquisitivity leads and makes him to remember Krishn. He wants to know who is he. who is God.

Like we examine something on a material plane, he wants to apply the same process in understanding him.

The second is advanced to first. He places himself in between Tamas and Rajas guna.

Page 12: Chinmaya Sunday Geeta Class Notes

ArthaarthyThe third type of person is known as “Arthaarthy”

Containing mostly “Raajsik” qualities, this person remembers Krishn for the successful execution and ending of his endeavours.

Now Arth is not limited to Wealth. An Arthaarthy may very well wish for good relationships, a better garden..etc. In short he aims for a better conclusion for his work and remembers Krishn

More advanced than first and second ones.

Page 13: Chinmaya Sunday Geeta Class Notes

GyaaniThe fourth son is Gyaani, Seeker of Truth and Knowledge.

He is most dear to Krishn.

Consisting mostly of Sattva Guna.

He do not seem to possess any of the previously mentioned reasons for remembering Krishn.

He simply remembers Him because he just likes him. That’s it. He may or may not be in distress, may or may not be inquisitive about Krishn’s some aspect, may or may not wish/want anything out of this illusory plane, anyways he remembers him.

the great mystery remains “WHY”.

The greatest of understanding of intellects revolve around this mystery “why the hell he remembers him if he do not want anything!!”

“WHY”

Page 14: Chinmaya Sunday Geeta Class Notes

WHY!Because out of the four, he only is “Action-less”, while remaining in the world of Actions.

Because out of the four, he only is “detached”,while remaining in the world of Attachments.

Because out of the four, he only can see, through the veil of “Maya”, the Lord Shri Krishn.

Because out of the four, he only is in “BLISS”.

That is why Shri Krishn says,

the gyaani, who has become one with ParaBrahma, while still residing on the planes of illusion, and under the condition of Birth and Death, is the most dear to me.

Om Tat Sat.

Appendix. These things came along the sidelines of class

Stay Tuned. (you know with whom!)

Remain status conscious. Well not in physical sense but know that if you are a Sadhak, maintain the path, do not let Kaam, lobha or bad company make you deviate.

Four attributes are linked to a realised soul,

“Tulya”

“Ninda”

“Stuti”

“Santusht”

Base your love for anybody not because of grosser things. if you want to base it anyways, if you want to love “because of”, then find the “sukshatam”/“the finest”/“the subtlest” of reasons. Ultimately to do so you’ll become the fourth kind.
