For 100 years Camp Chingachgook (Chin-ja-cook) has been a place of discovery and wonder for children and their families. The camp offers an idyllic location on the east shore of Lake George in the Adirondack State Park. Its variety of activities, and helpful staff make Camp Chingachgook a paradise for campers.

Camp continues to grow while remaining true to the benefits first offered in 1913: making friends, appreciating nature’s beauty, and challenging yourself to learn new things. These experiences are at the heart of a Chingachgook summer.

Our staff are the reason your child will want to come back year after year. We select only the most caring and talented young adults to be role models for our campers. Our experienced team of professional, year-round directors mentor our summer staff and oversee all aspects of programming.

Nearly 80% of our staff were campers at Chingachgook. All our staff receive training and certifications in the skills they teach campers, with more than 200 certifications awarded to staff each summer.

Each camper cabin is staffed by a counselor, an assistant counselor, and a counselor in training. They live with 8-10 campers during each session.

Camp also employs a team of healthcare professionals who provide consistent care to campers and staff throughout the summer.

“Spending time on the lake and in the mountains added so much to my daughter’s experience at Camp”.

-mother of Sr. girl Camper

In 1912, a group of boys from the Schenectady YMCA went camping on Lake George. The war canoe they travelled in was called “Chingachgook”.

Providing a genuine wilderness experience for young people has been a major part of our mission since those early days of Camp. That tradition continues today with camping trips and wilderness adventures incorporated into all of our summer programs.

One day each week, our day campers pack their lunches and head into the woods for a two hour hike. They cross streams, see waterfalls and enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake George at the end of their trail.

overnight campers in one week sessions spend their Wednesday afternoon venturing from Camp by foot or boat. These afternoon trips are to the summit of a mountain, the base of a giant waterfall, or to one of the beautiful islands on Lake George.

overnight campers in two week sessions depart Camp Monday of their second week for a three day, two night wilderness adventure. These travel by boat, bus or on foot to their destinations.

Each of our three day trips are rated for difficulty, and divided by age and gender. Campers review their trip options and choose their preferences prior to being sorted into camping groups. Each group is accompanied by counselors who are certified in Wilderness First Aid, and have training specific to the location of their trip.
