Overview of the Status of Chinese Chi Research

Hui Lin, Ph.D., International Yan Xin Qigong Association

Dr. Yan Xin is using modern scientific methods and tools to prove (to the Western mind)that the focusing of Chi (qi) onto substance such as DNA can be measured. !e hasmade man" successful scientific studies in cooperation #ith ma$or research institutes anduniversities both in China and abroad.

Dr. Yan Xin (pronounced "an shin) is a ph"sician of the Chinese %raditional &edicine'esearch nstitute of Chongqing ichuan province China. *efore he studied Chinesetraditional medicine he studied in t#o colleges of Western medicine in China. !e is agraduate of the +niversit" of Chinese %raditional &edicine in ichuan and has taughtChinese traditional medicine for five "ears.

 A number of eperts and highl" accomplished professors have recogni0ed some of thesescientific qigong eperiments. 1reliminar" observations and reports on scientific qigongeperiments suggest the follo#ing conclusions about chi (qi) and are supported b" man"professors<

• Chi has the properties of matter=

• Chi has the properties of energ"=

• Chi conve"s comprehensive information content or has the characteristics of

information= preliminar" results reveal that<

• Chi emitted b" the human bod" to achieve certain effects is sub$ect to the

regulation and influence of human thoughts and is influenced or disturbed b" the

emotions of the participants of an eperiment as #ell as the eperimental designand environment.

%he above five points are summari0ed from the perspective of scientific research b" anumber of scientists based on ne#l" discovered phenomena. -urther eperiments havedemonstrated that eternal Chi (qi) possesses multiple attributes.

-or eample collaborated #ith professors at %singhua +niversit" on chemistr"eperiments. We studied the bromination reaction of n9heane as affected b" long9distance qi emissions using a >double blind method.> %"picall" the bromination reactiononl" happens the instant a strong ultraviolet light is introduced. %his changes the normall"

dar4 reddish9bro#n mied solution of n9heane and bromine into a clear solution.!o#ever under conditions of dar4ness long distance and the >double blind method>eternal qi turned the reddish9bro#n solution of n9heane and bromine colorless #ithinfifteen minutes. *" measuring the molecular characteristics of the solution #e found thatthe molecular structure and densit" of the solution #ere changed. &oreover qi couldchange the color of the upper t#o9thirds of the solution in a test tube #hile leaving thecolor of the lo#er one9third unchanged. %hese results indicate that qi possesses specialattributes.

n addition to the attributes mentioned above qi is also bi9directional and self9controllable.%hese attributes #ere confirmed b" a number of scientists based on the results of limited

eperiments. -or eample follo#ing an instance of successfull" altering the molecular characteristics of #ater using qi a number of professors #ondered if the results #ereerroneous. %o determine #hether the results #ere false and #hether or not the molecular characteristics of #ater actuall" #ere modified the" #anted to see the altered #ater bereverted to the pre9qi emission state that is to see the original molecular characteristicsof #ater restored through the use of qi.

-ollo#9up observations and measurements #ere carried out on qi9treated #ater ever" half hour. Within several hours the laser 'aman spectrum of qi9treated #ater #ith alteredmolecular characteristics graduall" reverted to a spectrum of the original molecular characteristics of #ater.

 After this eperiment the professors reali0ed that qi possesses the characteristic of reversibilit". %his reversibilit" differs from the ordinar" deca" of energ" and from the half9life of medicines or radioactive nuclei. pecificall" the effects of qi can be revertedaccording to the qi9emitter5s #ish. !o#ever subsequent eperiments also found that thespectrum changes induced b" qi can be permanent. ncredibl" in other eperiments theeffects of qi #ere reduced reverted (no effect) then reversed (opposite effect). -rom

these eperiments man" professors reali0ed that qi has ama0ing characteristics andpossesses multiple attributes.

%o summari0e based on a series of qigong eperiments have conducted over the lastten "ears in collaboration #ith man" leading universities and scientific institutions in China

&easurement of /i through cientific &ethods

 As mentioned earlier preliminar" understanding of qi b" man" scientists is based oncurrent scientific eperiments. !o#ever the current scientific qigong eperiments are ver"limited in scope 99 man" areas have not been studied. And the areas studied have merel"

focused on ordinaril" measurable phenomena. n fact there are possibl" man" moredeeper and even more perpleing phenomena "et to be investigated. As for monitoringand measuring qi thin4 that modern scientific methods do have limitations. n other #ords the #hole modern scientific paradigm including its theories technologies andprecision instruments is ver" restricting.

 A number of qigong phenomena and functional potentials as recorded in historical qigongrecords and displa"ed b" modern qigong practitioners d#arf the results of current qigongeperiments demonstrating that the completed qigong eperiments are ver" narro# inscope. %here is much qigong content currentl" be"ond scientific measurement. %healread"9performed eperiments cannot monitor or measure man" of the intermediate

processes. 1resentl" #e can onl" partiall" eplain some aspects of qi througheperimental results. -or instance there is still a lac4 of scientific means to investigateand determine ho# qi changes the molecular structures of substances and to determinethe intermediate processes for the changes in the deca" rate of a radioactive nucleus.trictl" spea4ing qigong research should involve a much greater effort from the entiresociet". Currentl" the essential qualities of qigong and qi are difficult to stud" in a detailedqualitative and quantitative manner.

o far #e have limited our discussion to measurable qigong phenomena obtained frompreviousl" conducted eperiments. !o#ever as far as the microscopic phenomena #ithinthe #hole qigong9related macroscopic phenomena are concerned the unobserved is

much greater than the observed. &an" characteristics of qi and qigong cannot becomprehensivel" epressed in terms of current eperimental phenomena. %here is a needto further adapt contemporar" sciences to this effect.

@ust as some scientists believe modern9da" qigong needs science to unearth ecavateand rene# itself or to ma4e a great self9resurrecting leap for#ard= science also needsqigong5s techniques achievements and elements to advance itself. n other #ordsqigong needs science to resurrect itself and through the process of resurrection andrene#al qigong #ill enable science to ma4e a great leap for#ard.

1erhaps at some point in the future qigong #ill actuall" promote the advancement of science through $oint efforts b" numerous qigong enthusiasts in the scientific communit".

 At that time #e #ill be able to discern #a"s to detect qi and clarif" the essential qualitiesof qi in qigong 99 its mechanisms principles and s"stematic paradigm. Currentl" due tothe difficult" in monitoring and investigating qi phenomena qi9related research is stillsuperficial and limited in scope. At best #e can measure onl" a tin" fraction or anetremel" small portion of the qi phenomena. %he ma$or portion of the qi phenomenaremains to be investigated.

/i and -our -undamental -orces 99 ,ravitational 2lectromagnetic trong and Wea4nteraction -orces -rom a qigong perspective all things in the universe #hether living or non9living possessqi. &an" things are formed under the influence or transmuting processes of qi. %hus qi is

interrelated #ith various sciences technologies and highl" technical 4no#ledge. cienceis familiar #ith three or four traditional forces= the energ" of qi and qigong are related tothese t"pes of energ".

-rom another point of vie# the energ" of qi li4el" encompasses the four natural forces#hich are defined b" the concepts of modern ph"sics. !o#ever the energ" of qi probabl"etends be"ond our current understanding of natural forces. %houghts and imager"created during qigong practice should also be considered as essentiall" energetic innature. %his concept is not merel" m" personal anal"sis it is also the conclusion of man"other professors and eperts. %he energetic aspects of qi not onl" deal #ith or encompassthe three or four natural forces recogni0ed b" modern science the" are also associated

#ith a different and more special energ" or even multiple energies #ithin the variousphenomena (including unrecogni0ed and uneplained phenomena) in the #hole universe.

Consider a simple eperiment on qigong potential. n this eperiment people used their qito sha4e pills out of a sealed bottle. !o#ever the intermediate process #as undetectableb" an" available means. %he pills passed through the bottle (analogous to conductedeperiments in #hich a person passes through a solid #all) even though the bottle iscompletel" sealed and intact #ithout an" possibilit" of tampering. %here #as no #a" todetect an" trace of the phenomenon of energ" change. !o# did the pills pass through thebottle; ince these 4inds of phenomena eist the result and conclusion of the eperimentis evidenced but #e cannot determine the intermediate processes. %his demonstrates the

probable eistence of a form of energ" associated #ith qi #hich transcends the three or four fundamental forces.

 As another eample people have observed that all things on earth are influenced b"gravitational force= ho#ever >qinggong> the qigong potential of being #eightless eists.!as the gravitational force been suspended;

%he energetic nature of qi probabl" covers much more than the meaning of these three or four natural forces more than our current understanding of >energ"> or >po#er.> %hissub$ect demands further investigation.

1h"sics teaches us that the speed of light is the fastest velocit" at #hich one ma" transmitmaterial energ" and information. Are there an" material phenomena that can travel faster than the speed of light; -rom a qigong perspective it seems ver" possible. *ut #hat 4indof energ" can ma4e such a speed possible; %his is difficult to assess. At the momentmodern scientific means still cannot discover or practicall" measure such an energ" form.t is li4el" that the speed of thought is faster than the speed of light but ho# can this bemeasured; !o# can this phenomenon be captured;

n conclusion man" phenomena concerning qigong eperiments still cannot be measuredor monitored. &an" of the measurable phenomena cannot be eplained. /uestions on thenature of qigong energ" demand further investigation.

cientific qigong research ma" require a combined effort from all of societ". &an"scientists ma" have recommendations for further stud". &" personal opinion is as follo#s</igong science should ta4e into account all of the s"stematic theories and scientificcharacteristics of modern science including the entire methodolog" and model theories of modern science and rigorous and precise design considerations such as >double blindmethods> for scientific eperiments. !o#ever qigong science also should strictl" observeand ta4e into account the qigong tradition qigong characteristics and the three #ondersof qigong= subtle #onder m"sterious #onder and incredible #onder. n other #ords those#ho are engaging in scientific qigong research (including people #ith qigong training andthose #ho engage in monitoring and measuring qigong effects from a purel" scientific

angle 99 scientists commentators promoters and others) should consider both thecharacteristics of modern science and qigong. Neither can be neglected nor ignored.Without a combined approach scientific research on qigong eperiments #ill not occur ata deep level and scientific phenomena #ill not be recogni0ed.

-or modern scientific qigong research to better serve the entire human societ" it needs tostress the stud" of basic theories as #ell as the stud" of applications and development./igong under the correct guidance of modern scientific theories #ith sound eperimentaldesigns and through the combined effort of scientific researchers #ill probabl" achieve abrea4through on fundamental qigong theories thereb" bringing about an advancement inscience.

%he preliminar" qigong eperiments conducted so far can on the level of fundamentaltheories ma4e man" scientists in the contemporar" scientific communit" shoc4edecited confident and hopeful. At the same time qigong can also bring hope to people#ith medical problems those #ho #ish to use qigong techniques to ad$ust their ph"sicalcondition as #ell as those #ho #ish to use qigong methods to develop and promotedisciplines such as culture medicine and the arts. *" emphasi0ing research on bothbasic theories and applications #e ma" be able to bring good fortune and happiness toman" people.
