In January of this year, Google announced that they are not willing to censor searches in China anymore and may back out of the country.

China’s internet is protected by “The Great Firewall of China” which block tons of websites and search results.

Ex: when you search Google for “"Tiananmen Square" in China, you get information about one of the largest public squares in Beijing.

In the rest of the world, you get the infamous picture of a brave student standing in front of a tank in a 1989 protest

ChinaChinaChina reacted to Google’s action with anger“Google has violated the written promise it made

on entering the Chinese market," said a statement on the noon news. "It is totally wrong in halting the filtering of its search provider and in making aspersions and accusations toward China about hacking attacks."

Major effected cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Nanning. (second map)

Possible Solutions

• USA could buy products whose companies support the flow of free information in China.

• Individuals should stay informed of China’s and Google’s information and internet policies.
