the CoUrse AND it’s historY

Ranked as one of Buckinghamshire’s favourite courses, Chiltern Forest is definitely worth a visit. It may not be long at 5,800 yards, but it is an enjoyable and challenging par 70 that tests even the low handicap player. Golf in some form has been played here since the 1890s when the land was owned by Baron Alfred de Rothschild and has developed from its original six-hole layout into the current 18 holes. In 1919 the Government purchased the complete estate and the course became part of RAF Halton. During WW2 three times Open Champion Henry Cotton was stationed at the camp – he’d been professional at nearby Ashridge – and was instrumental in the design and expansion of the course to nine holes. Indeed, it is Cotton’s Folly - the 216 yard 17th uphill par 3 - that recognises his contribution to our history. In the mid 1980s the club decided to acquire land adjacent to the course and extend it to the 18 holes you will experience today. Much of the land was purchased from the Forestry Commission, so many of the additional nine holes look far older than they actually are because a great deal of established trees were left in place when the forest was cleared. The holes opened for play in 1992.

Our greens staff work hard to present a course that is in excellent condition throughout the year. We challenge you to find a better “year round” golf course in the area, as we are extremely fortunate to have a chalk-base soil that drains superbly in the wetter months, but retains moisture in the drier ones.

The club’s commitment to continually improving the course is shown by our investment in the latest green-keeping equipment and methods, and the continued improvement to our layout by our rolling development programme. We are sure that once you have experienced Chiltern Forest Golf Club you will agree that it is indeed a “Jewel in the Chilterns” and will be back to play it again and again.

PlAYiNG GolF At ChilterN Forest

As a private members’ club, Chiltern Forest prides itself on catering for all golfing needs. Competitions are held on a regular basis for all our membership categories and abilities. In addition, we have a number of club teams playing both formal and informal matches against other local clubs, including our men’s scratch side, men’s handicap side, ladies teams, and various mixed, senior and junior matches.

We are also proud of the fact that members can have access to the course without having to book a tee time. Coupled to the numerous “roll-ups”that occur throughout the week, it means that even on your own you will never struggle to find a partner for a game. In addition, our “Buddy” scheme for new members – where an existing member looks after a new member in his or her first few months – ensures that you will be fully welcomed and integrated into the club.

As with all golf clubs, Chiltern Forest offers a range of membership options – full, five-day, intermediate, junior, etc. But if you are just starting out on your golfing career, our unique Academy membership incorporates a series of lessons with our resident professional to give you that vital initial experience.

We have already stated that Chiltern Forest is a private members’ golf club, and while the club is operated from day-to-day by the secretary and management committee, you and the other members actually own Chiltern Forest and play an important part in just how it is run.

Pro shoP

The Chiltern Forest pro shop is run by our qualified PGA professional. He stocks leading brands including Callaway, PING, MacGregor, TaylorMade, Snake Eyes, Mizuno and Wilson Staff. There is also an excellent variety of other golfing equipment in stock, including bags, shoes, balls, clothing and accessories for men, ladies and juniors.

The pro shop also offers a full club repair service from re-grips to re-shafts. All repairs can be ready within 24 hours. Equipment can also be custom-fitted by our PGA professional to ensure it is just right for you. We also offer a “try before you buy” service from our friendly and experienced staff who will be on hand to give expert advice.

Just remember the pro shop is also open to non-members, so feel free to pop in anytime.

Although a private members’ club, we are delighted to host functions for non-members. Our hospitality is matched only by the magnificence of the surroundings. Nestled on the edge of Wendover Woods with unrivalled views of Buckinghamshire, Chiltern Forest provides the perfect venue for a corporate event or special celebration.

The clubhouse can accommodate up to 90 people for a sit-down meal, and we can tailor menus to suit your requirements using fresh ingredients delivered daily from our reputable suppliers. Our catering and events team can put together the perfect meal for more formal events like weddings, but they can also cater for something a little more lively. Successful themed events include a Caribbean BBQ with live steel band and an Arabian Night with belly dancer.

Chiltern Forest is the ideal setting for societies and corporate days. We can cater during the week for small or large groups and are happy to customise your day to exact requirements. We can deliver the complete package to exceed expectations of visitors or guests. What better way to impress than a memorable golfing day out.

VISITORS

It is not necessary to provide a handicap certificate to play our course, but in the interests of safety the club reserves the right to refuse anyone permission to play if their lack of ability is likely to be to the detriment to others on the course.

All non-members must visit the pro shop before heading out onto the course. There they will be given advice about play on the course, playing conditions and what tee to start from. The pro shop is fully stocked for all requirements and is highly competitive on price.
