Tshilikauthee – Chalaakaatha – Chelecothe – Chillicothe . A name with a special sound and meaning chosen from the Shawnee Indian language and denoting its meaning: Principal Town .

Colonel Nathaniel Massie founded the town of Chillicothe, in the valley between the Scioto River and Paint Creek, in 1796. Prior to that, the area had been inhabited by the Adenas and Hopewells, and, more recently, by the Shawnee, who had a

town in the area until 1787

In 1800, the United States Congress named the town of Chillicothe seat of government for the eastern division of the Northwest Territory and two years later a constitutional convention was held there. Congress approved the constitution, and Chillicothe became the first capital of the state of Ohio in 1803. It served as the capital of Ohio until 1809 and then again from 1812 to 1816.

In 1917, during World War I, the city grew even more. Camp Sherman was constructed, bringing an influx of construction workers and military trainees and personnel. The population increased from 16,000 to 60,000, bringing with it a bout of housing construction and new businesses. The Veterans Administration, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and three state correctional facilities now occupy much of the original Camp Sherman.

Papermaking has had a presence in the community for more than 100 years. Glatfelter Inc. produces paper used in publishing the Harry Potters series and “The Joy of Cooking” books.

The Chillicothe and Ross County area is known as an industrial city surrounded by an extremely productive agricultural region. Tourism also plays an important role, providing many attractions for visi-tors wanting to learn about Ohio’s first capital – the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, the Ross County Heritage Center, the Majestic Theater, the Lucy Hayes Heritage Center, the Pump House Center for the Arts, TECUMSEH! Outdoor Drama and of course our historic architec-ture which tells a story on its own.
