It’s objective was to capture the railway line at Irles. The next day the battle continued. On the 23rd August the battalion was asked to clear a spur north east of Irles. Csualties were not considered high given the intensity of fighting. LYONS G.J Petty Officer Stoker 283619 George Jack LYONS. HMS “Trident”. Royal Navy (RN). Drowned 29th April 1916 aged 41 years. Born Chilham, Kent. Buried in the Blythe Cemetery, Northumberland. Grave reference C.99. The Ashford 1918 Absentee Voters List gives – Taylors Hill, Chilham Driver 124714 Reginald Godfrey LYONS. Royal Field Artillery. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission list George’s ship as HMS Formidable. The Formidable was sunk by a German submarine (U24) on 1st January 1915 which means that George could not have possibly served on this ship at the time of his death (if the dates are accurate). Further research has resulted in his correct ship being identified – HMS Trident. HMS Trident was not sunk the day that George died. 43

William was a native of Broomfield in Kent. This conflicts with the information given on Soldiers Died CDROM that states he was born at Bridge near Canterbury. His quoted regimental number also appears incomplete. The day that William died his battalion was in the neighborhood of Beaumetz and Betrencourt in France. Both these villages are some seven miles or so south west of Arras. Except for some trench mortar activity, this sector was fairly quiet. William was killed at this location in reserve trenches.
