Our country has become, in many aspects, a model of success in the macroeconomic management for the economiesof the emerging markets, being recognized by the World Economic Forum as the country with the best infrastructurein Latin America in 2009. The real income per capita has increased in 3% annual average in the last 12 years, thepoverty rate has decreased in half in the same period, the public sector has become a net creditor and Chile hasjoined the OCDE.
However, the Chilean economic growth has depended strongly upon the industries based on the natural resourcesexploitation such as mining, silviculture, fishery and food industry. While the country’s export base has been diversified, cooper sill has a dominant position, with an annual average of 55, 7% of the goods export income in 2006-09. Goodssuch as cellulose, fruit, wood, salmon and wine have become important export goods, also methanol, processedwood, white and red meat, certified seeds and equipment for metal processing, are becoming more outstandingitems. Some traditional exports such as gold, nitrates and fish flour have also increased strongly.

Chilean engineering has played an important role in the process of growth and development of the country. Chile, located at the ends of earth, in respect to those which have been the development centers, has had to forge itsdestiny, in a great manner, by its own means, in a varied geographical environment and with big challenges forhuman settlement, all this has strengthened discipline, solidarity and people’s creativity, attributes that Chileanengineering has made of its own together with its development and country growth.
In fact, from the middle of IXX century, Chile starts nitrate exploitation which requires an important industrial andinfrastructure base which allows making the most of technology from that age and starting a formation of professionalsand technical able to support and develop it. With the income from nitrate exploitation, the state can invest in thedevelopment of infrastructure of the rest of the country, mainly with the construction of railways, contributed byEuropean engineers that train Chilean professionals, transferring them their knowledge and experience. This practicalformation of Chilean engineers and technical continues to the early XX century, with the beginning of the exploitationof great copper deposits, whose product substitutes nitrate as the main income that supports country’s growth.

In the middle of last century, the state decides to promote production funding important national industries in thefields of iron and steel, oil, power and mining, and others that allow diversification the industrial base of the country. In any industrialization Chilean engineers participate and are formed, who later will yield to the first engineeringconsulting firms with capabilities and experience to satisfy great projects of investment.
The nationalization of Great Copper Mining in 1973, puts in the hands of the state od Chile the operation of fourmines and copper production plants which represented about 20% of the world production of this metal, being twoof them biggest ones of its kind in the world. Chilean engineers are those who enface the challenge of keeping themines and plants operating productively and those who have to carry out modernization and expansion plans tomake them competitive and environmentally sustainable. Currently, CODELCO created during the copper nationalization, has six operations Mining- plant in production and one in construction phase: today the company produces morethan 1, 8 tons of fine copper per year.
Industrial growth, in which copper mining outstands positioning Chile as the first world producer, has been developedusing the great engineering capabilities that has been formed in the country, which has also motivated that 9 out of20 main companies had established their copper and metals mining base centers in Chile, several of them acquiringor associating with local engineering companies to develop, from here, their projects around the world.

Chilean engineering, constituted by national established firms and also a good quantity of local firms, has demonstratedhaving a great capacity to satisfy a variety and types of projects, in its different development stages, with experience, especially in copper mining and metallurgy, iron and precious metals hard to find somewhere else in the world.
