Spiritual strength has to do with the inner man the heart and soul of man (Matthew 10:28; 16:26). Spirituality has to do with man in his response to God, the salvation God alone can provide (Ephesians 2:1-9). Spiritual life can be obtained and it is to be maintained; the outer man is perishing, the inner man can be renewed day by day (II Corinthians 4:16ff). Spiritual life and strength rest upon the truth of God, and proper response to it. Every aspect of the Christian faith is addressed to mankind, at the deepest level of man’s being. Every aspect of obedience to God must arise from the inner man, and be a manifestation of the true inner being of man. Every aspect of obedience, of devotion, of worship is designed of God to impact man at the deepest level of his being. Consider the following: Prayer involves physical actions; the attitude of the body, the use of the voice, etc. Yet, prayer is far more than a physical activity. It is to be the expression of the desires of the heart, ruled and guided by reverence, humility, gratitude, love, and faith. Additionally, the same can be said of offering praise to God. The necessity is that the worshiper offer a “sacrifice of praise,” (Hebrews 13:17). Undeniably, the Lord’s Supper involves the worshiper in several physical actions; the eating of the unleavened bread, partaking of the fruit of the vine, calling to mind the sacrifice of Christ, anticipating His return. The outer man is involved, but the design of the Lord’s Supper is to bless and benefit the inner man – to impact the worshiper at the deepest level of His being. The will of God demands and deserves the most intense thought and noble resolve, ruled by an awareness that worship is ever a high and holy activity. Undeniably, the truth of God insists that deep careful personal examination be made, that prayerful introspection, and the actual application of the will of God be made, that our hearts, souls, mind, and strength be turned to Him. It seems clear that there is much more involved in the “transforming” of one’s mind, than simply giving casual or habitual thought to our place before God. Faith biblical faith is heart and life changing. Likewise, biblical love is heart and life altering. To coin a phrase, there is a great distinction to be made between possessing faith and being possessed by faith. There is a vast difference between possessing love and being ruled and controlled by love. That difference is more than in terminology. They that would come to God must believe (Hebrew 11:6), and they must love Him supremely (Matthew 22:36ff). It seems appropriate to insist that the health and strength of the inner man be given the most careful and consistent attention and emphasis. ~Ronald Bryant Morning Assembly August 9 th Assembly Announcements Don Dillahunty Announcements Don Dillahunty Song Leader Morris Guest Song Leader Rick Pinney Opening Prayer Larry Sanderson Opening Prayer Glenn Kenner Scripture Reading Winn Hendricks Scripture Reading Roger Derda Prayer Leader Otto Buehler Prayer Leader Morris Guest Lord’s Table Andrew Matthews Lord’s Table Keith Drochak Pat Myers Les Turner Austin Wester Winn Hendricks Greg Hendrickson Bill Stewart Closing Prayer Gary Zito Closing Prayer Rudy Kantu

The Inner Man Physical strength is essential to physical life. Despite every effort and precaution physical

life is marked out with brevity (James 4:13-14). Intellectual strength is also essential to life in

the body, and it too has but a short existence. Spiritual strength has to do with the inner man –

the heart and soul of man (Matthew 10:28; 16:26). Spirituality has to do with man in his response

to God, the salvation God alone can provide (Ephesians 2:1-9). Spiritual life can be obtained

and it is to be maintained; the outer man is perishing, the inner man can be renewed day by day

(II Corinthians 4:16ff). Spiritual life and strength rest upon the truth of God, and proper response

to it.

Every aspect of the Christian faith is addressed to mankind, at the deepest level of man’s

being. Every aspect of obedience to God must arise from the inner man, and be a manifestation

of the true inner being of man. Every aspect of obedience, of devotion, of worship is designed

of God to impact man at the deepest level of his being.

Consider the following: Prayer involves physical actions; the attitude of the body, the use of

the voice, etc. Yet, prayer is far more than a physical activity. It is to be the expression of the

desires of the heart, ruled and guided by reverence, humility, gratitude, love, and faith.

Additionally, the same can be said of offering praise to God. The necessity is that the worshiper

offer a “sacrifice of praise,” (Hebrews 13:17). Undeniably, the Lord’s Supper involves the

worshiper in several physical actions; the eating of the unleavened bread, partaking of the fruit

of the vine, calling to mind the sacrifice of Christ, anticipating His return. The outer man is

involved, but the design of the Lord’s Supper is to bless and benefit the inner man – to impact

the worshiper at the deepest level of His being. The will of God demands and deserves the most

intense thought and noble resolve, ruled by an awareness that worship is ever a high and holy

activity.

Undeniably, the truth of God insists that deep careful personal examination be made, that

prayerful introspection, and the actual application of the will of God be made, that our hearts,

souls, mind, and strength be turned to Him. It seems clear that there is much more involved in

the “transforming” of one’s mind, than simply giving casual or habitual thought to our place

before God. Faith – biblical faith is heart and life changing. Likewise, biblical love is heart and

life altering. To coin a phrase, there is a great distinction to be made between possessing faith

and being possessed by faith. There is a vast difference between possessing love and being ruled

and controlled by love. That difference is more than in terminology. They that would come to

God must believe (Hebrew 11:6), and they must love Him supremely (Matthew 22:36ff). It

seems appropriate to insist that the health and strength of the inner man be given the most careful

and consistent attention and emphasis.

The Pearl of Great Price

Matthew 13:45-46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a

merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of

great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

In “The Parable of the Hidden Treasure”, I suggested…

That Jesus was depicting the “value” of the kingdom to one

who accidentally finds it

Jesus followed His parable with another short parable…

Commonly called “The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price”

– Mt 13:45-46

Its similarity to the previous parable is obvious, and yet

there is a difference

First let’s consider – THE DETAILS OF THE

PARABLE…

1. A merchant is seeking beautiful pearls

2. He finds one pearl of great price

3. Undeterred by its price, he sells all that he has and buys

it!

The use of the word “Again” ties this parable to the

preceding one ……Where the value and preciousness of the

kingdom was being described

Where we saw the value to one who accidentally finds it

But in this parable, the person is on a mission to find that

which is of great value

a. He believes there is something out there worth looking

for, or he would not be seeking it

b. When he finds it, he immediately recognizes its value and

is willing to sell all to obtain it

3. Neither this parable (nor the previous one) is suggesting

we can “buy” or otherwise “earn” our salvation

a. For salvation is a gift – cf. Ro 6:23

b. We can “buy” salvation only in the sense of gaining

rightful possession of it

1) Which we do by grace through faith – cf. Ep 2:8-9

2) When we submit to the working of God and the renewing

the Holy Spirit which takes place as we are baptized into

Christ – cf. Co 2:11-13; Titus 3:4-7

This parable, then, describes how some people react to the

kingdom of heaven, when they know there must be

something out there worthy of great value and have been

searching for it.
