Long Day ChildcareA service that is for children from birth to 6 years. Long day childcare is ideal for parents working, studying or in need of respite. The long day childcare services available in the City of Maribyrnong include
+ Community based services housed within Council-owned buildings with services managed by a committee of management or a not for profit organisation
+ Victoria University services provided on campus for staff and families
+ Private services
Families using long day childcare can access the Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) to assist with the payment of fees. Families can claim CCB and CCR either weekly as fee reduction or annually as a lump sum. Families need to apply for these rebates through the Department of Human Services on 13 61 50 or www.humanservices.gov.au
Education and Care Services Education and care services provide play based learning programs supporting the social interaction, interests and developmental needs of each child. All education and care services abide by the Education and Care National Services Regulations and Law, which outline the required qualifications for educators. There are different types of education and care services.
They include:
Family Day Care Childcare programs offered in an educator’s home. The programs are for small groups of children from birth to 12 years. Educators in Family Day Care Schemes are registered and have a wide range of training and experience.
Family day care is a good option for families who require flexible hours of care. www.mychild.gov.au provides a list of services in the City of Maribyrnong.
Families using registered Family Day Care Schemes can access the Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) to assist with the payment of fees. Families can claim CCB and CCR either weekly as fee reduction or annually as a lump sum.

Maternal and Child Health This service is available to all Victorian families with children from birth to school age. The Maternal and Child Health program focuses on families having 10 Key Age and Stage consultations with qualified nurses.
This free service supports each child’s development by offering family support, reviewing children’s health and the provision of a safe space where parents can discuss their concerns. Extra consultations can be arranged if needed.
Maternal and Child Health also offer:
• New Parent Groups
• A Breast Feeding Support Service
• Infant CPR sessions
Families can make Key Age and Stage appointments on 9688 0501.
Primary SchoolsAll children 5 to 12 years are required to attend school. Education and learning experiences in line with the Australian Curriculum in Victoria (AusVELS) are provided by qualified teachers.

Leisure and RecreationRecreational services provide many opportunities for families and children to be involved in social and physical activities, these include
+ Recreation and Aquatic centres
+ Community Centre’s and Neighbourhood Houses, Parks, Playgrounds and Sports grounds
+ Walking and Cycling trails
A wide range of other services are also available.
Out of School Hours Programs Care for primary school age children outside school hours and during school holidays.
+ Before and After School Care – operates during school terms
+ School Holiday Care – operates during school holidays
Out of School Hours Care is managed by local schools and recreation centres. Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) subsidies may be available to reduce part of the fees.

Library Services Maribyrnong library services encourage children’s learning experiences. Families and children can borrow books, videos, CD’s and DVD’s. Qualified staff have a range of training and experience. Membership is free. Maribyrnong library services also offer:
+ Story times and activities – weekly during school terms (children 3 to 5 years)
+ Baby Rhyme time – monthly sessions (children birth to 2 years)
+ Kid’s Club – monthly school terms (children 6 to 10 years) free activities, new books and games
+ Computers and internet

Children's Services in Maribyrnong(Birth to 12 Years)

Aboriginal Early Years SupportThe Aboriginal In-Home Support Program and the Aboriginal Home-Based Learning Program provides support to Aboriginal children and their families in the early years of life.

Kindergarten (Pre-school)Four year old kindergarten is an early learning program for children in the year before attending school. Programs are funded through the Department of Education and Training (DET) and delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher. Kindergarten programs are offered in dedicated kindergartens and long day childcare centres.
The Kindergarten Fee Subsidy program provides free or low cost access to 4 year old kindergarten for eligible children.
Some services also offer 3 year old activity programs.
Early Start Kindergarten provides free or low cost kindergarten to eligible three year old children. To be eligible, children need to attend a program delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher.

Preschool Field Officer The Preschool Field Officer (PSFO) program supports funded kindergartens to build their capacity to provide for children with additional needs and deliver an inclusive program that all children can access and participate in.

Occasional Childcare A program for children between birth to 6 years and is offered in blocks of three or five hours per session. Educational activities are offered by qualified staff with a range of training and experience.
Occasional childcare is provided by local recreation and community centre’s and neighbourhood houses. A fee for service is charged and Government subsides may be available.

Central Registration System (CRS) Maribyrnong City Council administers the Central Registration System (CRS) which allows families to register their child in community managed children's services for:
+ Long Day ChildCare
+ Four Year Old Kindergarten
+ Three Year Old Activity Programs
Registrations can be made any time after the birth of a child.
Families can register by logging onto the Central Registration System Online Portal www.ldckindergarten.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au or by completing an Application Form available on Council’s website or local services.
A non-refundable administration fee applies upon registration. Families with valid subsidy cards and some visa types are exempt from the administration fee.

ImmunisationImmunisation is available from birth to 6 years through appointments from 6 weeks to 1 year in three Maternal and Child Health centres. All immunisations are available through drop-in sessions at four sites in the City of Maribyrnong. Immunisation session dates and times are available on the Council's website.
Families can book appointments for immunisations by calling the central booking number 9688 0145
PlaygroupPlaygroups encourage children to play and learn and give families the opportunity to meet, share experiences and parenting skills. Families are responsible for their child while at a playgroup.
Playgroups usually meet once a week for two hours. Most playgroups are run by parents or carers with the times, venue and play activities chosen to suit the group. Some playgroups are led by a facilitator to provide more support for families and children with additional needs.

Toy Libraries Maribyrnong Toy Libraries provide a borrowing service with a wide range of educational toys. Families become members of the toy libraries to cover operational costs and the purchase of new toys. Both the toy libraries within the City of Maribyrnong are operated through the West Footscray Neighbourhood House. For more information email [email protected]
