Making a difference in the lives of children and youth

T he purpose of the Children's Hospital Foundation is “to further the physical, mental and social well-being of children and their families in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec by raising,

managing and disbursing funds.”

1999 marked a very exciting milestone for the Foundation; revenuetopped more than $10 million. This was accomplished, in a large part,by CHEO's Dream of a Lifetime lottery that featured 15,000 additionaltickets bringing the total to 40,000 and $1.4 million in prizes. The giftplanning program also had another very strong year.

Many third-party events benefitting CHEO did very well. During theyear, more than 150 of these were held including the new CountryCares for Kids radiothon hosted by Y105 and the Tried and True Hikefor CHEO.

Each year, the Foundation's main event is the CJOH Telethon forCHEO. Our Telethon is part of the North America wide Children’sMiracle Network (CMN Canada). All funds raised locally benefitCHEO. In 1999, the Telethon raised a record $2.6 million.

Funds raised by the Children's Hospital Foundation provide extras tothe Hospital making a good facility into a world-class health centre. Each year, the Hospital identifies major areas that require funding. These have traditionally fallen into the following areas:

• Research start-up grants,

• Equipment,

• Staff education,

• Family emergency needs and

• Enhancements to the paediatric nature of CHEO includingbooks, toys, games, etc.

The Hospital and the Foundation Board collaborate to distribute thefunds where the needs are greatest. In the past few years, the Hospitalhas given priority to replacing and upgrading aging equipment. TheMedical Advisory Committee reviews submissions from all Hospitaldepartments for new pieces of equipment and attempts to establishthe most urgent priorities.

The Foundation also commits approximately $900,000 per year to theCHEO Research Institute for distribution to researchers starting newprojects. The Research Institute’s Science Committee awards thesefunds. CHEO researchers are conducting research into Autism,Diabetes, pain management, genetic disorders, mental healthproblems and Cancer.

Foundation funding helps enhance the paediatric nature of theHospital. This is accomplished through improvements to the physicalenvironment such as child-friendly decorations and play parks.

Some funding is made available to the CHEO Social Work departmentfor families who are in crisis and need short-term financial assistanceto make it through a difficult period.

In summary, the Foundation provides funding to the Hospital on apriority basis.

25th Anniversary Celebrations

C HEO and the CHEO Foundation celebrated their 25th anniversaries in 1999 with a year-long birthday party.

A January kickoff breakfast hosted by the CHEO Foundationfêted former employees. Other events included the“Sweetheart Celebration” that provided a Valentine’s lunchfor employees and volunteers and a scavenger hunthighlighted support areas throughout the Hospital. The FirstAnnual Looney Tunes Show, an employee lip-syncing andtalent show, was an overwhelming success.

CHEO welcomed everyone to the party May 16 with openhouse tours, balloon rides, music and cake. CHEO donorssent best wishes on birthday-cake candle cutouts to theHospital as part of the pre-Telethon appeal. On May 17, theanniversary of the official opening date, service awards werepresented and an alumni tea recognized retired staff, including renaming the employee recognition award afterMrs. Winnie Bickerton, CHEO’s first employee.

The CJOH Telethon for CHEO had an anniversary theme andCHEO Bear and the children sang happy birthday together atthe annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Foundationfinance VP Dan Holland was one of99 employees who celebrated25 years of service to the Hospital.

Permanent reminders of theanniversary are the memorygarden located in the playpark next to the Ottawa-Carleton Children’s TreatmentCentre and the Hospitallobby’s wall of fame. Ananniversary time capsule isburied in the memory garden. Thecapsule, to be opened in the year2024, features construction photos andnames of special people who have helpedCHEO grow.

O n behalf of the board of the Foundation, I would like to thank the many donors and supporters for their contributionsto our Children’s Hospital.

We capped our 25th year with a record-breaking $10 million dollars. This is a truly remarkable achievement that literally thousands ofpeople played a role in making happen.

Throughout the year, we had a number of special events to markthe Hospital's 25th anniversary. We installed a special donor boardthat recognizes the names of the founding fathers and mothers ofthe Hospital. At the Foundation, we expanded our Dream of aLifetime lottery to 40,000 tickets and we had numerous communityfund-raising events that incorporated the 25th anniversary into theiractivities.

As to the future, the Foundation board has combined efforts withthose of the Hospital’s board of trustees to ensure a coordinated andcohesive approach to helping our children at the Hospital. Togetherwe have launched a capital fund-raising campaign that is overand above our annual fund raising. The Promise Campaign isdifferent because it is about making a major commitment to ourHospital’s future.

You will hear more of this campaign throughout the year and morefrom our Campaign Chair Arnie Vered. We would like to expressour appreciation to Arnie and his team of volunteers who willoversee the $19 million campaign. These funds will be combinedwith Ministry funding to cover the costs of building requirements, new programs and research initiatives.

CHEO remains a very special part of our community. I want tothank the staff of the Foundation who work tirelessly everyday withcommunity partners to raise funds for the Hospital. It is our honoras Foundation board members to be entrusted with helping ensurethe Hospital has the necessary financial resources to carry it forwardinto the next millennium. Thanks to everyone who helps make adifference for our children and youth.
