A Message from your Pastor:

Believe it or not, we are at the beginning of the school year! That means fall is not far from now. I know it’s hard to believe considering it’s still 100 degrees outside!

With September comes the restart of many of our programs, groups, classes, etc. Now is the PERFECT time to try something new, or to restart something that maybe you’ve gotten out of the habit of doing.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! September 4 is when our music program restarts. If you’ve ever wanted to explore your musical side, there are lots of different opportunities: vocal choir, hand bell choir, and praise band. This ministry (as is all our ministries) is not limited to any particular age. Come out on September 4 or talk to Kathy Toensing about how you might get involved.

Worship on Wednesdays (WoW) program begins again September 11. WoW is our after school program that runs from 3:30 (after school) to 5pm and is for PreK4 to 6

th grade. We always need

volunteers to make this program all it can be. Caleb is your man. Talk to him and he’ll put you to work!

And while we’re talking about education, we currently have two adult education groups on Sundays at 10:30 am. It would be great to have more if there is an interest.

During the next few months I will be doing a series once a month about some of the wider church activities that have been going on during the summer. I’m going to kick it off on September 8 by sharing about the ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering that I attended in July. Other sessions are in the works, all intended to get some conversation started on the role St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church is already playing in the larger picture.

There are lots and lots of other groups and things that are going on starting again in September. Please please please please think about getting plugged in. If none of these opportunities interest you, let me know and let’s work together to find something or create something that you are interested in!

Pastor Candy LYO arriving in Utah!

Chillin’ with Caleb A Summer Retrospective

Hello St Paul,

It’s been a whole summer since I last wrote to you in this Newsletter. In that time, St

Paul has hosted our Annual VBS Day Camp, the LYO has traveled to Utah and back, and I

personally attended the 2019 Churchwide Assembly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There’s a lot

to unpack in those three things and only so much space I can take up in this newsletter, so

I’ll do my best to cover the important things but still keep it brief.

VBS Day Camp was a fun time, as we welcomed over 70 different kids throughout

the week of June 24-28 to St Paul for a week of learning about God’s Wonder and having

fun and fellowship with each other. Our team of Lutherhill Staff did a great job leading the

kids in games and Bible studies, and I’m proud to say that among that team were 3 of our

own kids from St Paul. Rather than travel to Lutherhill for Water Day this year, we held our

Water Day here at the church, complete with inflatable water slide.

The LYO Summer Trip took place from July 19-28. We traveled to Junction, Utah in a

group of 34 people and had the greatest time there. While there, we worked in the town

of Marysvale in cleaning up a public park. Our kids got so much done that the local

government there marveled at how our group is the best volunteer group they’d ever

had. Highlight moments from the trip include having a sunset worship at Bryce Canyon

National Park, in addition to trips to Zion and the Grand Canyon National Parks, trekking

to a waterfall in the Fishlake National Forest, and White Water Rafting down the Sevier

River. As leaders in the group, we always hope and pray that we are putting together

something meaningful for the kids, so we were comforted to hear that many kids

considered this the best trip they’d been on.

August came and I found myself flying to Milwaukee for the 2019 ELCA Churchwide

Assembly. While there, we as a church collectively passed resolutions committing to many

things such as furthering interfaith relations, assisting refugees and migrants, and seeking

to better our race relations with people of African descent. We also voted to ordain

Deacons, or ministers of word and service, when they had previously been consecrated as

well as approved a new budget for the Churchwide governing body. It was five jam-

packed days in Milwaukee and I was proud to represent our congregation there amongst

so many other brothers and sisters in Christ. Also the 80 degree weather was a plus too.

But now that I’m back, I’m excited to get ready for a new year here at St Paul and

I’m pleased to have a little routine back in my life. As a reminder, LYO resumed for the

year on August 28, and WOW will resume on September 11.

-Caleb

Caleb can be reached in person in the office Tuesday through Friday, via email at

[email protected], or via his cell phone at (512) 944-7859.
